Easy Ways To Prep For Fall At Home

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall” -Oscar Wilde

With the kids back in school, it’s time to think about preparing your home for fall. While I know summer is still in full swing in many parts of the country, the crisp days of fall are right around the corner. And while I adore autumn, I know there’s a lot to do around the house before I’ll be able to enjoy the brilliant blaze of color that comes with the Autumnal season.

Over the years, I’ve learned the hard way not to put off preparing for fall. Trust me, you do not want to discover at 3 o’clock in the morning that you forgot to turn off your outside water and, thanks to a hard freeze, your garden burst, and your water pipes are as wide open as an unruly ripe tide. Or you decide to spend the evening in front of a crackling fire only to find yourself filling your home with smoke. The kind that lingers far into spring!

So, even though the autumnal equinox is still eight weeks away, now is a good time to start preparing your home for fall. By spreading out your chores over the next few weeks, you’ll ensure your home is ready for cooler temperatures when they happen. After all, Mother Nature has been an unpredictable lady as of late. So getting fall ready is a must!

13 Steps To Preparing Your Home For Fall:

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

1. Fertilize Your Lawn:
According to experts, winterizing your lawn starts with a proper fertilizing in the fall. This will help protect it over the winter and help it green up faster-come spring. This is especially important in areas with dry summers since grass tends to stop growing under such extremes. Fertilizing in autumn will give your lawn renewed growth, in terms of both base and roots, ensuring your lawn is thick and healthy for next summer. This is also a great time of year to patch your lawn and reseed any patches that have been damaged by the harsh rays of the sun.

2. Get Your HVAC Serviced:
If your trusty AC has been faithfully chugging along all summer, now’s the time to give it a thorough clean before putting it to bed for the season. Be sure to clean the coils first. Then once your coils are clean and dry, clean and/or replace your filters (for both your AC and furnace) before switching your thermostat to heat settings. This also goes for window AC units as well. Finally, be sure to make sure all vents are uncovered and have been vacuumed to prevent trapped allergens and spores from being redirected around your home this fall allergy season at home.

3. Clean Your Gutters:
I freely admit, cleaning the gutters is one of my least favorite chores throughout the year. For my husband as well. So to prevent clogged gutter, foundation damage, and the death to beloved landscaping, we work in a pair twice a year to clear out our gutters. Taking all collected debris into our compost bin for disposal. Now for those who may not like this option, many local contractors provide such services as well. Whatever option you chose, don’t skip out on this murky chore before hurricane season starts this month!

4. Drain And Store Your Lawn Equipment:
Over time, unused gas goes through chemical changes which lead to gum and other harmful deposits that can destroy your lawn equipment. So after you’ve given your lawn a final once-over for the season, including having your blades cleaned are sharpened, make sure you drain the tanks of your lawn mower, leaf blower, pressure washer, and weed eater.

5. Drain Outdoor Faucets And Sprinklers:
Fall is the season when you will want to disconnect your outdoor hoses, turn off the outdoor water supplies, check to see if your connections and water splitters are intact, weather-proof any rain barrels and spouts, and then open your external faucets and drain them all of the excess water. Once drained, properly store your hoses.

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

6. Clean Your Chimney:
When I think of chimney cleaning I always picture Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, his face covered with soot. “Chim-chim-e-ny, chim-chim-e-ney, chim, chim, cheroo aside,” there’s nothing charming about filling your home with soot and carbon monoxide because you haven’t had your chimney cleaned. Even gas fireplaces need their chimneys cleaned and inspected to ensure there are no bird or squirrel nests blocking the flue, and electric units also need a throughout the inspection. This job is best left to pros, and the cost runs around $100-200.

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

7. Get Your Ice Melt Ready:
While I live in the deep south, and we don’t often get a tremendous amount of snow, we still have plenty of cold weather storms each winter. Which is why we purchase several bags of ice melt each August to keep our home stocked up for the seasons to come. And growing up, when I lived up north, September was the month my family had our snowblower serviced each year. Steps that help ensure you won’t be left out in the cold when you need snow-ready tools this coming winter!

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

8. Stock up on candles
When it comes to my homes indoor spaces, there’s still preparing that’s needed before the first decorations of fall come out of storage. And by preparedness, I mean securing not only my homes safety but happiness, warmth, and coziness too! Which is why I love bringing instances of hygge into my home each fall. Starting with stockpiling warm, inviting candles.

Because nothing creates a warm, cozy home like the glow of beautiful fall scented candles. I prefer earthy fall scents, including sandalwood and spicy cinnamon. I also like to pick up white, glass pillar candles and portable candle lighters, both available at your local dollar store, to store for hurricane season power outages too.

Either way, the diligence in stocking up on your favorite candles now will pay dividends for many months to come!

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

9. Launder your winter linens
Nothing says fall to me more than warm, cozy, crochet throws, knitted pillow covers, flannel sheets, down covers, and throw blankets galore! But before I can enjoy these cold weather cuddles, I make sure to have them laundered properly in the fall. After laundering, I love to bring out these gems into my home. From flannel blankets hung on my ladder rack to layers added to my bed, I always feel cozier when my linens are freshly laundered each season!

And if you are in the mood for a few extra hygge touches around the house this season, consider checking out Wikibuy. With Wikibuy, you can score coupon codes, loyalty rewards, and better offers from sellers with each purchase you make.

I use their Chrome extension to find the lowest prices available when it comes to buying linens, rugs, small appliances, and housewares I need each fall. Because when you use the service when the community of like-minded buyers knows a lower price is available at another store, you’ll be notified, automatically, right on the product page from stores you love and  Wikibuyers also earn loyalty rewards at stores like Walmart, eBay, and Neiman Marcus. The credits you earn create real discounts.

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

10. Create a fall book list
When it comes to Hygge, it’s all about the little things in life. Which is why I love to start my season with a reading list. This list contains books from a myriad of sources, ranging from my local library, free kindle books, and even classic audiobooks. Then, all the physical titles, are added to a bedside table for easy reading this coming season and digital titles are added to my kindles and iPad in equal measure. And I have no trepidation in telling you that the one hour I set aside each night to reading help relax my mind and help me sleep better each evening at home!

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

11. Curate comfortable clothes
Each fall, I make sure to look through my house clothes to make sure they are still as cozy as ever! And if any piece is beyond mend, I then replace them by investing in quality cotton robes, pajama sets, sweat suits, and jumpers. Always making sure to shop slower, and second-hand first! My most important rule? Choosing looser fitting, soft clothing in natural blends.

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

12. Clean your coffee and tea appliances
Each fall, I enjoy a wide assortment of DIY coffee and tea drinks at home. So before the season starts I make sure to clean my coffee and tea-related small appliances at home. This cleaning and maintenance include:

  • Changing the filter in the Keurig machine
  • Thoroughly cleaning out my espresso maker
  • Steam clean my coffee tampers
  • Soak my french press to remove any stains or deposits
  • Sanitize my tea steepers
  • Clean out all coffee carafes
  • Cleaning out the electric kettle and heating pad
  • Deep clean my coffee cups, Irish coffee mugs, and travel cups

13 Steps To Prepare Your Home For Fall

13. Make a fall shopping list
Each fall, I prowl throughout my pantry to make sure I have everything on hand for the fall and winter season. I like to stock up on products like:

  • Organic teas and coffee
  • Dry beans
  • Spices (cinnamon, cardamon, ginger, allspice, turmeric, nutmeg, and black peppercorns)
  • Maple syrup
  • Hot cocoa
  • Walnuts
  • Steel cut oats
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Dried cranberries
  • Canned organic pumpkin

Foods that help me pull together my weekly meal plans, create flawless instapot meals, and to keep my body nourished and active during the fall and winter SAD season. All foods that are affordable can be purchased in bulk, help me to feel that hygge vibe all season long, and can be picked up through free local pick-up!

So, friends, that’s it, my 13 steps to making your home fully prepared and cozy for the upcoming fall season. Remember that it’s all about the small things in life and capturing moments that bring you happiness. So cozy up, light a candle, make a fall to-do list, and then when you’re done, enjoy a little Hygge in your life this fall.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Cat-Friendly Home in Tip-Top Shape!

TidyCats

Growing up my grandmother believed that having pets in the home wouldn’t enable you to be able to keep your home as clean as possible. As a result, I missed out on the opportunity to grow up aside pets as a child. One of the few things I regret about my childhood growing up.

After all, who doesn’t just love cats? Like most cat owners, one of my missions in life is to make sure that my furry friends are living their happiest, healthiest life at home. Especially my cat, Mr. Darcy, a rescue kitten my husband surprised our family with one afternoon last fall. He’s named after one of my favorite characters in fiction, Mr. Darcy, from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

5 Ways to make your cat happy at home

Since the day my husband brought home our sweet little kitty, Mr. Darcy has become one of our best friends. A cat who lives life to the fullest. Making him the perfect cat!

In addition to having the perfect furry friends at home, I also like to keep my home perfectly clean too! Luckily, as many times over pet owner now I know that it’s not only possible to keep your home clean while being a pet owner, but it’s quite simple too!

Its all about having a pet-friendly cleaning routine at home. A routine I do each morning where I do a scan of my home and quickly clean up any pet messes in my living, dining, and bedroom areas at home. Making sure that the pet hot-spots, the litter box areas, pet beds, food stations, and play areas are tidied up, vacuumed, and are restocked for the day. I then make sure to feed my feline crew and am then off to workout and get myself, husband, and little one ready for the day.

This simply 30-minute morning cleanup allows my home to stay in tip-top shape. In such good shape, that unless you saw our litter boxes or food stations, you might not know pets lived in our home. And that’s such a little span of time and energy compared to the love and happiness my crew brings into my life each day!

Now if you’re looking for tips to help keep your cat-friendly home spic and span this season, here are a few tips to help you get started:

Finding the right cat litter:

TidyCats

As a multi-cat home, we use Purina® New TIDY CATS® Free & Clean™ Unscented Clumping Litter. It helps us keep our litter box stations clean, sanitary, and to help keep litter boxes odors at bay!

Purina® New TIDY CATS® Free & Clean™ Unscented Clumping Litter provides unscented odor control with the Powder of Activated Charcoal. I like the unscented version of this litter because with multiple cats my allergies already have enough to decipher each day. So why complicate things with artificial litter smells too?

It provides powerful odor control is at the top of every cat owners must-haves of litter list which is why this littler is without added fragrances and dyes. Free & Clean offers you the odor-absorbing power of activated charcoal plus TidyLock® Protection to lock away odors.

Purina® New TIDY CATS® Free & Clean™ Unscented Clumping Litter. is also 99.9% dust-free, clumps strongly, and help to keep your litter box station clean-up quick and easy at home. With TidyLock Protection that locks away odors to eliminate those dreaded litter box odors each day. We keep litter boxes in our kitchen and storage rooms so keeping them smelling fresh is a priority for me!

TidyCats

I pick up this litter at Target when I pick up my other pet supplies and food staples each week. I shop at Target at least once a week for the entire family and love their selection of pet food, treats, toys, and of course, litter too. It’s the convenient, affordable way for me to keep my pet family well stocked at home!

Have the correct number of litter boxes at home:

Its a general rule that you should have a litter box for each one of your cats at home, plus one. Which is why we have four litter boxes at home. Making sure each box stays clean and fresh by scooping them twice daily, once in the morning and again at night each day. This helps keep our home cleaner, cats happier, and eliminates not only litter box aggression but litter box odors too!

Set boundaries for your pets:

Since our cats were kittens we have trained them to have safe, healthy boundaries by keeping them off of specific surfaces in our home. Including kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, coffee tables, and our kitchen table. This allows me to help keep the surfaces we need to be as germ-free as possible and helps keep our pets away from heat sources or our food too!

We give out cat areas a deep clean weekly:

Each weekend we live out cat-specific areas, including litter boxes a deep clean. We take them outside, remove all litter, hose out the boxes, sanitize the surfaces, and let them sun bleach until dry. This allows us to keep our cats healthier and while cleaning out the litter we can check for urine crystallization, a condition that would require immediate vet assistance.

We create cat-specific play areas in our home:

A fresh and happy at home should always include areas for your cats to play and enjoy their time in your home. We have several small areas that contain cat trees, toys, and our food stations, but we also have an area in our second spare bedroom that is designated as our pet-play space. In this space, we house two litter boxes, out pet bunny’s hutch, our hamster set-up, and DIY cat ramps and a cat toy area.

TidyCats

As cats are natural climbers, we made sure to include simple boards, beams, and ramps that allow them to climb about the room without interfering with my cleaning routines or with the other furry friends they cohabitate with at home in our playroom.

We used reclaimed, heat-treated palette wood, metal hinges, a table saw, and miter saw to put everything together. The entire project took under an hour.

Under the ramps, we keep the various toys, mats, tunnels, and scratching posts we picked up at Target to make sure our fuzzy friends have lots to play with each day at home!

TidyCats

So if your home is a happy home that loves having one cat or multiple cats, like we do, be sure to head over to your local Target and purchase Tidy Cats® Lightweight Free & Clean for your litter boxes and you’ll immediately see a difference in the freshness in your litter box stations, with no extra added scents. Target is always a great place to stock up on your pet’s needs, plus do a little bit of shopping for yourself too!

7 Tips To Keep Your Home Cleaner With Dogs

This post is sponsored by The Libman Company but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

pets

As many of you know, we have a large adoptive pet family. Including three amazing dogs, including our twelve-year-old Westie, Roxie, our seventeen-year-old Chihuahua Harley, and my pride and joy, my nine-year-old Shih-Tzu Sassy.

So it’s not a big surprise that when it comes to keeping my home clean at home with pets, it can sometimes be a constant uphill battle. Considering that I already have two other human beings in my home with a penchant for all things messy.

Luckily over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping all the pet messes in my home at bay and today I’m sharing my top 7 tips for keeping your home clean and tidy with dogs.

1. Quickly clean up accidents.

Pets are often very scent driven. When it comes to effectively cleaning up pet accidents its best to air on the side of attending to stains sooner than later. My go-to? Enzyme cleaners.

While many prefer baking soda and vinegar bombs, they are often effective only at removing surface stains, whereas enzyme cleaners naturally dissolve the bacteria and pet-induced pheromones completely. Allowing you to quickly address accidents which will help you in the long run.

Because even if you can’t smell the residual bacteria and pheromones left behind by pet accidents, your pets certainly can. And this lingering smell can include repeat performances which over time can damage carpeting and untreated hardwood flooring

pet feeding station

2. Create a pet feeding station.

Keeping your dog bowl and water bowl on a clean, wipeable surface will allow you to quickly clean up food messes as well as to allow for a more hygienic means to feed and nourish your fuzzy friends each day.

At home, I like to use feeding stations consisting of easy-to-clean food dishes, a water fountain, and treat bowls places on top of clean contact paper. This allows me to keep their feeding area clean and tidy throughout the day.

3. Bathe your dogs bi-weekly.

Bathing your dogs bi-weekly will help keep your home cleaner and help keep your allergies at bay by keeping pet dander, shedding, and the proverbial ode de dog scent we all know and love.

This is also a great way in warmer months to keep your pets healthier as bi-weekly bathing will help you to kill any residual fleas that can come into your home via evening walks as well as give you the opportunity to get hands-on with your pets and check them over for ticks. Especially important from May-November each year.

4. Brush your pets often.

If you have a dog that sheds, is a long-haired variety (as two of my fuzzy friends are), or are prone to skin allergies, regular brushing will not only keep your home much cleaner but will also help to prevent painfully, difficult mats from forming. What’s even better? Many dogs enjoy a great brushing. So consider adding it to your pets existing care and comfort routines at home!

5. Stock my home with the right cleaning supplies.

When it comes to cleaning up after my pets at home, my go-to is always my Libman Tornado® Spray Mop. It’s my favorite because it features zero-waste cotton strings, which after you’re done the cleaning, can be thrown in the washing machine and line dried for quick and easy pet mess cleanups.

But what’s even better? After many seasons of cleanings mopings at home, the mop can be composted at home. Making it not only very effective at cleaning pet messes at home but eco-friendly too!

6. Set regular bathroom break trips.

One of the most effective ways I have found at home to limit pet messes is to regularly set household times for letting my dogs outside each day.

I designate times throughout the day where my dogs are allowed outdoors to our fenced in backyard where they can relieve themselves, play, and enjoy their time outdoors. This helps to not only eliminate pet messes indoors but like with children, helps out dogs release some of their pent-up energy too!

7. Clean your dog’s paws when they come inside.

Is there anything worse than being in the middle of mopping your home only to find redeposited paw prints everywhere? To remedy this, I make a point of wiping down and around my dog’s paws each time they come into our home. Especially on rainy days at home.

What to do to keep your home cleaner with pets this season?

The next time in-store at your favorite big box store, make sure you’re stocked up on pet cleaning supplies for your home. Especially the Libman Freedom® Spray Mop.

Not to mention, I really love the ability I have to throw the mop head straight into the washing machine after a messy day and right outside to line dry and sun bleach at home. It can hold up to at least 100 washes. Perfect for all your cleaning at home this season! My favorite part? This mop is easy to use, it’s not heavy in hand, and is always fresh, clean, and ready to use at home!

It also works great on my homes various flooring including century-old hardwood floors, ceramic tile, and concrete flooring too! Head on over to their site and find the closest retailer to you!

April 2018 No-Spend Update

April 2018 No-Spend Update

It’s hard to believe that today marks the last day of April in my 2018 No-Spend Year!

Unlike other months, April was a relatively easy-going month in terms of our no-spend progress. This past month I didn’t need to make any large repairs at home, replace any items, or seasonally prepare anything at home. Overall I spent a total of $212.14 on groceries and toiletries while saving our family $881.62.

How I saved:

  • $116.00 on requesting interlibrary loan books for of my reading club selections.
  • Used earned Amazon gift cards to purchase $100.00 in household goods for my ETSY shop.
  • Groomed pets at home which saved us $70.00.
  • Sold unused household items on Facebook local groups and made $125.00.
  • Reviewed a phone case and saved $20.99 off the cost of buying a new case.
  • Was gifted a care package of Lush Soaps and saved $40.00 by not buying toiletries.
  • Used free Redbox codes twice for family movie nights and saved $3.00.
  • Utilized free Hulu with our family Spring plan and saved $7.99.
  • Traded crochet handtowels for homemade preserves, nut butter, and produce; saved $50.00.
  • Donated to charity for tax receipts in deductions totaling $150.00.
  • Ate from our pantry and freezer for one week saving $64.00.
  • Cut my family’s hair at home. Saved $70.00.
  • Sold used books on eBay. Earned $64.64 after seller and PayPal fees and shipping labels.

I was very encouraged by my savings this past month. Especially with what I was able to put back from selling things around the house. It still surprises me how small things still seem to creep into our home. This was due largely to having participated in a YouTube minimalist collab this month really helped me reprioritize my decluttering habits at home.

Around the house:

April 2018 No-Spend Update

This month also saw the end of this year’s robotics team at my husband’s school. To end the year with a bang, my husband and our local robotics team were able to try out a STEM learning kit I received from Circuit Cubes. They had a ball with this kit. If you’re in the market for affordable STEM learning kits, check them out here

April 2018 No-Spend Update

Spring has also found its way into my garden. I’ve spent a lot of time germinating seeds, weeding flower beds, pruning crepe myrtles, mending the trellises for our climbing roses, planning to build additional compost bins, and turning the last of fall’s leaves into mulch for the warmer months ahead.

I also made a batch of my DIY rose food. It’s my go-to for keeping my climbing roses looking their best year after year. As you can see, the results speak for themselves!

April 2018 No-Spend Update

This past month also saw the creation of a small venture on this site, Anchor app mini-podcasts. Each Thursday I post a 5-7 minute mini musing over my week, home, and ideas rattling around the noggin. I’d love for you to check them out each week! I’m also working on my upcoming regular podcast and two ebooks set to be published later this coming season.

5 Tips For Zero-Waste Cleaning at Home

I’ve also gotten back into the habit of prepping my household cleaning caddy each Monday. Making batches of all-natural bleach, wood polish, and countertop cleaner. I’ve also been experimenting with a DIY black soap cleaner, so stay tuned for an upcoming recipe as well!

Needless to It has been a busy time at home. A time of progress and enjoying more of the simple life at home.

So, friends, I want to ask, did you participate in our no-spend, or your own frugal April, be sure to leave your comments about what you learned! If you didn’t participate, I’d still love to hear how and where you saved the most this month! Share your stories below!

What is zero waste living?

What is zero waste living?

If you’ve read my blog for longer than a few weeks you will have heard me mention the phrase zero-waste living. But you may not be familiar with its purposed meaning.

In my home, we abide by the Zero Waste International Alliance definition of zero-waste living which states that:

Zero Waste living is a 21st-century movement that aims to shift our economic system from a linear economy (our current global system) to a circular economy. It “guide[s] people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.

A lifestyle choice that came directly as a result of living a more simplified lifestyle at home. And with any newly adopted lifestyle choice, you want to share your success and enthusiasm with others. But often when I speak about living my own zero waste journey, the reaction I’ve come to expect is, “That’s impossible.”

And to a degree, I agree. As a human being with a family that consumes products, goods, and services in order to maintain our home and lifestyle, it is impossible for us to create absolutely no trash in the society we currently live in. As part of the economic waste stream, my purchases produce waste that I do not see, both upstream and downstream. I also live in a super small town without bulk shopping options, and aside from Amazon purchases, my local purchasing options are limited to mass retail and the seasonal access to farmer’s markets. So why do I bother trying?

5 Tips For Zero-Waste Cleaning at Home

At its core, zero waste challenges individuals to evaluate their lifestyle. To reflect on how our consumerist habits negatively impact the environment and communities. Examinations of how inconvenient our convenience lifestyle presents to our planet. How detrimental cheap plastics and disposable food products are to our planet’s health and our own.

After all, we all reside in the same disposable society. We are disconnected from our personal collective waste steam and have been convinced by the same susceptible marketing that suggests that buying copious amounts of stuff will make us feel worthy as human beings.

For the average person, trash and recycling are picked up from the curb weekly, never seen again. The compartmentalized deluge of our past that keep our landfills overflowing, our oceans littered, and our soil and watersheds teeming with pollutants. Leaving humanity, particularly those in the developing world, left to live amongst the billions of tons of waste that we create daily.

And this isn’t just a planetary dilemma as our consumerist reach has extended into our solar system. As our galaxy is also becoming peppered with inactive, Cold War era satellites. Archaic examples of our need to disavow fellow humans and undermine international global practices different from our own masked as human innovation.

5 Tips For Zero-Waste Cleaning at Home

So, what does all this mean? As a race, we have reached a point where the zero waste movement is necessary to safeguard the future of our ecosystems and our own survival as a species.

As a society, it isn’t too late to change course. But don’t fool yourself, expect to confront hostility, naysayers, and resistance from others. Every step of the way.

While the zero waste movement isn’t a new lifestyle, it is still considered a fad. Especially in our plastic veneered society. With the 20th century not only ushering in the age of plastics and with it the birth of global warming, widescale wildlife extinction, and massive soil contamination worldwide.

The zero waste movement seeks to combat this disposable mindset by offering the alternative of frugal, sustainable living. With zero wasting living being a long-term journey.

But make no mistake, this is not a perfect journey. As many living a zero-waste lifestyle can attest that the idea of the movement is to strive to be as waste-free as they are able to afford to maintain at home. Whether this means a 1% reduction or a 99% reduction in your personal trash output at home, little bit counts.

While our society may never reach zero, this shouldn’t stop any of us from trying in our own affordably-sourced way to lessen our carbon footprint each day!

Afterall, the zero waste lifestyle begins with a willingness to change. Everything from our daily consumption habits to investing in community awareness programs, sustainability projects, community gardening projects, demanding consistent environmental policies from politicians, and expecting environmental transparency from the media and their sponsored partners.

With all that said, if you want to be a part of this movement, here are a few easy ways to get started:

Realize you are needed in the zero-waste movement:

Zero-wasting is simple. Its all about aiming to send nothing to a landfill. Reducing what we need, reuse what we can, send few items to be recycled, donate when able, and compost what we cannot otherwise utilize.

To redefine our personal consumerism. By not waiting for marketing agencies and corporations to redefine the waste system. To not be complacent with being the link between a disposable economy where resources sourced from the earth are extracted, used, and redeposited in the ground.

Demanding that economy mimic nature. Instead of discarding resources, we choose sustainability instead. Which starts when you realize you are needed in the zero-waste movement!

Research:

Get the facts on landfill use. Did you know that the average North American sends 4.4lbs of trash to the landfill every day? Which makes total sense as we live in a disposable society where we don’t value the longevity of our belongings due to mass markets. Leaving not only the earth depleted but ourselves.

Landfills are also toxic basins responsible for 20% of the methane emissions in the US. Nor are they properly aerated for decomposition of natural materials. With everyday toxins from cleaners small electronics, and outdated tech components steadily leaching caustic chemicals into the soil, groundwater, and eventual ocean contamination.

Not to mention the trash that doesn’t even make it to the landfill. The deluge that litters roadsides, waterways, and watersheds worldwide. Particularly that of disposable food industry plastics.

Plastics, a petroleum byproduct, is especially dangerous to the ocean and marine life. As plastics aren’t biodegraded. They simply photodegrade into tiny molecules which are filtered through micro-plankton in the ocean. It is estimated that there is a ratio of 36:1 micro-plastic pieces to each plankton organism. A phenomenon that is so pervasive that its chemical compounds have been found in upwards of 90% of drinking water. Both from bottled and tap sources worldwide.

And for no other reason that the need for maintaining safe drinking water at home, you should join the zero waste movement!

What is zero waste living?

Reevaluate your ideas on recycling:

For decades Americans were lead to believe that recycling was a cure-all to environmental blight. Unfortunately, we cannot recycle our way out of this pollution.

There’s simply too much to process and we’re just consuming way too much to meet the demands of various commercial downcycling programs in North America.

Recycling also isn’t a perfect solution. While it plays into the solution, it should never be your first resource in becoming more zero waste at home. As the best way to become more zero waste at home is to lessen our dependence on post-consumer goods from store to home

Did you know, only 9% of plastic is actually recycled? And that in many areas of North America glass cannot be recycled at all

Which is why there is a reason recycling is LAST resort in the zero-waste mantra:  “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Rot, then Recycle”

Recycle shouldn’t be your first line of defense, it should your last. Because when you send items to recycled you lose control over their final usage. As most recycling isn’t processed in North America. Recycling is often shipped abroad and in the process utilizes more fossil fuels to transport than it saves in utility. Where it is largely shipped to China where deregulation of environmental policies allows for the futher degredation of the downcycling systems we value domestically.

Currently, China has put a ban on paper and plastic bales over 1% contamination. Compared to recycling facilities in the United States that are currently operating at 4% contamination level. Meaning that upwards of 60% of what you place in your recycling bins will end up as landfill or marine trash.

That doesn’t mean you should refrain from recycling. Simply that you should recycle better. Focusing instead on your reusing practices at home.

What is zero waste living?

Rethink what reducing means to you:

One of the best ways to enter the zero waste movement is to reconsider how you can reduce your dependence on products at home. Including many one-use products, packaged foods, and fast fashion. Consider opting for multi-use products, cleaners, small appliances, and investing in multi-seasonal clothing staples instead. By reducing what we think we need you’ll reduce what will be eventually thrown away.

Another great tip is to wait for one week before making a luxury purchase. Taking time to think about whether or not you truly need it. Then when you do buy something, opt to buy second-hand first. Reusables can not only save the planet but your wallet too!

What is zero waste living?

Recognize your value:

You may be thinking, will one person really make a difference? Yes! Every day you have the decision to positively impact the planet. From how you commute to work to how you buy your groceries, each action can leave a valuable imprint on your overall personal carbon footprint. Remember, every purchase you make is a vote for the kind of world you want to live in.

Because you don’t vote only at the ballot box. You cast a ballot with each purchase you make, with each company you support, and with each marketing campaign, you engage in.

Going zero waste will also improve your quality of life. Simplified living can help you live a better, safer, healthier, more frugal, debt-free life at home. And what’s better than eating better, feeling better, saving money, having your voice heard, and not having to take out the trash at the same time?

And for those who have already taken the plant-based plunge, you’re not done! Simply cutting out meat and dairy from your diet isn’t enough. To truly want to lower your carbon footprint cutting your plastic consumption from your home is necessary too! Afterall, you may reduce your methane emissions by going plant-based but if the veggies you bring home are plastic-clad, you’re still contributing to global warming and wise-scale marine worldwide!

What is zero waste living?

Rely on others:

Going zero waste has been such a liberating process for me, I want to share everything I’ve learned with you.

Because with just one step in the right direction, you can change the world. Feel free to check out the blog for sustainability topics on zero waste living, capsule wardrobes, greener living, composting, and minimalism. And if you have specific questions, feel free to drop me a line to nicole@theladyprefers2save.com or theladypreferstosave@gmail.com; I’d love to help you along your path to sustained living at home!

But if I could offer you one last piece of advice, its to please be realistic. We live in a society obsessed with instant gratification. And going zero waste is not conducive to that mindset.

Being zero waste takes time and patience. Don’t go around beating yourself up for faltering along the way. Instead, give yourself, and others, the grace to grow in your own unique zero waste journey. But no matter what, don’t be a zealot. Give others the same zero waste patience and knowledge that was given to you!

Zero waste living is centered around collective effort. The hope of change. The drive to see change happen. It’s in setting realistic goals that will help you change today and maintain that change at home in the future.

And, seriously – from the bottom of my heart thank you for trying! Together we can make a difference.

I hope that in our lifetime, we can see not only the amount of waste going into landfills be reduced but more people could choose to become healthier, more fulfilled people in the movement. People who learn to love the zero waste process. We can do this together.

In the words of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

Now, friends, I want to ask, are you considering going zero waste at home? Or have you been a zero waste veteran for some time and can offer other readers advice on making the transition at home? Share your story below. Inspire others!

7 Ways To Increase & Perfect Your Savings Goals in 2018

Its hard to believe that we are in the midst of the second quarter of the year. But despite the turning pages of the calendar, there’s still plenty of time to how to for us all to save money on the biggest expenses in your budget and increase our overall savings at home.

While most people want to improve their personal finances, but don’t know how to achieve their goals. Especially during the wanderlust of the Spring. A time when it’s easy to get sidetracked all the beautiful things one can buy for their homes during the warmer seasons of the year.

For me, the key to making a meaningful financial improvement each season is to focus on the process and the things I can control.

Here are some steps anyone can easily take to improve their financial well-being in 2018.

7 Ways To Increase & Perfect Your Savings Goals in 2018

1. Increase Your Savings Goal

When it comes to savings, bigger is always better. Whether you’re saving for your first home or for retirement, you can never have too much in your savings account. But funding those accounts can be tricky which is why increasing your savings rate can not only improve your financial health but give you more money to funnel toward your overall savings goals.

There are several ways to accomplish this goal. First, you need to know exactly how much you were able to save last year. Then you will need to create a workable savings goal higher than your previous year’s savings.

Second, you need to determine how you will be able to fund your account. Starting with work-related contributions. If you aren’t contributing the maximum amount to your company-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), then simply increase your percentage contribution to the plan.

If you are already maxing out your company-sponsored retirement plan, consider starting an IRA, Roth, taxable savings account, or investment account.

Additionally, you may be able to fund your savings goals by adjusting your withholdings from your paychecks at work, using a tax return, cashing in your initial emergency fund should you have more long-term savings account to date, or Spring cleaning your home and liquidating unused household items into cash savings.

No matter how you fund your goals, seek out several means to fund your overall savings goals. Preventing the age-old dilemma of placing all your eggs in one proverbial savings basket.

2. Regularly Track Your Spending

Once you have a small, obtainable savings goal in mind you then need to figure out ways to track your spending habits to help you meet your savings goals moving forward. With the easiest way to track your ongoing spending is to link online sites or apps such as EveryDollar or Mint.

Free services that allow you to track your spending on credit cards, bank accounts, and to have a visual reminder of your savings goals and slush funds each season as well.

Then after tracking your spending on your platform of choice for a season’s time, you will have enough data to determine your typical spending habits.

Understanding your spending habits will make it easier for you to plan for future financial goals. Including planning for retirement, saving for your children’s college funds, or making lifestyle changes such as transitioning to working from home or relocating your family.

Then, once you have tracked your spending habits you can create a working spending plan and, of course, reevaluate your savings goals accordingly.

3. Automate Your Bills, Utilities, and Donations

One of the greatest financial decisions I’ve ever made was to put my finances on autopilot. Because putting your savings, bills, and investment accounts on autopilot can greatly simplify your bill paying and exponentially increase your overall savings goals.

Starting with your checking and savings accounts. Have your workplace payroll department direct deposit a portion of each paycheck directly to your accounts. Making sure to put extra funding into your investment accounts.

If you are free of all high-interest consumer debt also direct deposit funds into separate savings account to fund yourself. Afterall, if you’re not paying yourself, what’s it all for?

Next, focus on your bills. I challenge you to find a bill that can’t be paid automatically. Everything can be paid online in an automated fashion. Including credit cards, mortgages, utilities, memberships, tuition payments, union dues, subscriptions, charitable donations, and even tithing.

Once you have your savings and bills on autopilot, you’ll need to set up automatic investing. By making your investment deposits automated, you commit to reaching your goals in an easy, practical way. You’ll also be able to avoid the trap of trying to self-track the market each season.

4. Post your financial goals

One of the best ways of seeing your financial goals come to fruition is to publically set clean, obtainable goals.

For me as a blogger and YouTuber, I like to post about my goals for the year as well as to record update videos. For some, this might be having weekly meetings with your spouse or partner to discuss your financial future.

For others simply writing down your goals and sticking them on the fridge, pin board, or in your bullet journal can help to give you the accountability you need to make your financial goals come to life.

No matter how you post your goals, first things first: You have to start by writing down your financial goals.

And no, stating you want to be rich or successful as a start-up doesn’t count. You need accurate, obtainable goals. Such as, in 2018 I want to save $10,000.00. I’ll fund this goal by taking on overtime hours at work as I am able to do so, selling my second vehicle, and by skipping buying out lunches or coffee at work. Now, that’s a specific, well-formulated financial goal!

Financial goals need to focus on 3 key terms: Time, funding, and accessibility. Without these 3 factors, it likely won’t stick! Which is why writing down a goal with an estimated date and expected cost dramatically increases your likelihood of success and helps you understand the which financial steps are most important to you and your family.

If you are stuck on creating your ongoing financial goals, match it against these questions:

  • Why is this goal important to me?
  • How much have I already saved?
  • How much can I set aside each month to fund this goal?

Answering each of these questions will give you a clear plan of action to tackle your goals. Because no matter your money goals, posting your goals will help you gain and maintain your financial footing for the remainder of  2018.

5. Reassess Your Budget

If you’re looking to increase your overall savings this year, you’ll need far more than simply cutting out lattes and lunch. Because according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
Americans spend almost 70% of their money on housing, groceries, and transportation.

Which makes reassessing your budget each season a true necessity. Making sure to redline your budget, looking for splurges disguised as essential spending. Expenditures that are more fluff than factual. Items that may be cutting into your savings goals at home.

The bigger the budget or a slush fund, the more time you should spend there evaluating your progress. Because chances are you’ll be able to locate found money that can help you fund your short and long-term savings goals.

Listen, you should be able to enjoy a latte every now and again. Afterall, treating yourself may very well be part of your self-care plan and can even be tied to emotions and experiences of your youth.

By making a concerted effort in cutting your big expenses, such as your housing and transportation budgets, can help you create working funds that will allow you to meet your savings goals and fund those delicious lattes you’ve been craving. And that’s something worth getting out of bed for!

6. Meal Planning

Meal planning for me is a way of life. And its something that has saved my family thousands of dollars each year. In fact, I have a meal planning mantra which is as follows: From the plan to the pan.

Without fail, I meal plan each week. I also know myself and it’s hard for me to limit dining out one meal each week. Because the more I dine out and get accustomed to all those carb-heavy favorites the more I crave them.

Instead, I try to make meal planning at home fun. I love theme nights. Small meals that can become occasions including Meatless Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Wild Rice Wednesday (dishes that are served with rice, Thai Thursdays, Fruity Fridays (foods with a citrus twist), Salad Saturdays, and Serve-Yourself Sundays.

I also find that meal planning helps me curve impulse buying in-store. To curb excessive grocery spending I plan my meals first by accessing my food budget (which is $65.00/week for our family of 3). I then check to see what pantry staples, deep freezer finds, and produce I have on-hand and using those finds base my weekly meals.

Meal planning has also allowed me to cut my food budget by 2/3 and to still eat healthy, organic, plant-based meals every day of the week. Last year alone, meal planning saved my family over $3,500.00. Funds that were used to fund ongoing savings goals at home.

7. I educate myself on financial matters weekly

Like with seasons, financial climates frequently change. As do my own personal money-related questions. With my financial literacy needs changing throughout my lifetime.

For example, in my 20’s I needed to know things like: What’s a good credit score? How do car loans work? Have I saved enough for retirement? In my early 30’s I’ve needed to know about rates for mortgages and how to invest for retirement?

While my age and financial needs have changed, what doesn’t change is the need for clear, trustworthy resources to help answer those questions. Because the difference between knowing what to do and not to do, in terms of financial literacy, can equal up to a whole lot of money!

I set aside one hour per week to up my financial literacy game. Time blocking a portion of my week to reading online resources that help keep my savings goals focused. With my go-to site for learning about financial matters being MyMazuma.com. A site that helps consumers, moms and frugal savvy gals like myself understand money matters and make better financial decisions.
