How Modern Life Affects Our Health

Photo by Dmitry Schemelev on Unsplash

There’s a lot to be said about modern living.  The technology is amazing, the medical and scientific breakthroughs are life-changing and we’ve never had so much good TV to watch.

Modern living has also come at a price, our health.  Today’s generations lead a very sedentary lifestyle, spending its time sitting behind a desk, eating processed food, watching TV or glued to our mobile phones.

There are a number of serious health risks associated with this kind of lifestyle including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

The Modern Diet

The typical modern diet is low in fiber and vitamins and high in fat, sugar and processed foods.  Many of us don’t even drink the recommended daily amount of water.

This kind of diet can lead to weight gain, diabetes, lethargy, headaches, bloating, constipation, bad skin and a whole host of other conditions. If you find yourself experiencing ongoing digestive issues then it’s best to get checked at a digestive disease clinic

The Solution

A diet that is rich in fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, and healthy fats is the most optimal for good health. Learn to meal plan so you are always in control of what you eat and don’t resort to convenience food or snacks.

Reduce the amount of fried, processed and fatty foods you eat. Drink more water.

Effects On Physical Health

A lot of us spend the day at work, in front of our computer, then head home.  Exhausted, we collapse in front of the TV or check our phones until we’re tired and want to go to bed.  Most of us don’t take the time to be active.

This lack of movement, coupled with a bad diet can cause serious health risks including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

The Solution

Make an effort to move more throughout the day.  Even if it’s just going for a walk during your lunch break, or taking the stairs.  Some companies allow employees to have standing desks or have implemented ‘walking meetings’.

Incorporate exercise into your daily life.  Something that you’ll stick to is the best form of exercise.  Walking, running, classes, team sports. Find something you like and can do between 3-5 times per week for at least 30 minutes.

Effects On Mental Health

Stress is everywhere.  Our home life, our jobs, the news.  It’s almost impossible to escape, but there are things that we do that can cause more stress.

Our constant use of smartphones can lead to insomnia, which in term can cause low mood and depression.  Some people are actually addicted to their phones, feeling anxious and stressed if they are without them for even short periods.

Constant connections online mean that we are missing out with actual, physical contact in the real world, leading to increasing isolation.

The Solution

Identify the main causes of stress in your life and work to minimize them as much as possible.  Limit your screen time, especially at nights and make an effort to socialize with people in the real world.

If you do feel stressed, anxious or depressed, seek help and talk to someone.

Working Together to Afford a Comfortable Life

Everybody wants a comfortable life, and if you can have a comfortable life with somebody you love, it makes it even better. A lot of work goes into a relationship, though, and if you want to achieve this comfort with your soul mate, you need to work together.

If you’ve never done so before, it can be challenging to work out the best way to approach your finances, whether shared or not. This shouldn’t be a cause for worry, though, so here is some advice on how you and your partner can work together to live a happy and financially stable life.

Be Honest with Each Other

Being honest about your finances will save a lot of friction and arguments. If you lay all your cards on the table, there should not be any problems. Never lie about debt or how much you spent on something, as these little lies will add up, and could morph into much larger problems later on.

Of course, sometimes, you can’t be entirely honest, and if one of you is up all night searching for engagement rings for all preferences, then it can be tricky, especially if you share finances. Borrowing money from friends and family is something that you might be reluctant to do, but in some cases, this may be the only way around it.

Stick To Your Budget No Matter What

It’s always hard to stick to a budget, and you can convince yourself that a few dollars here and there won’t hurt. However, this is never the case, and if you aren’t careful, you’ll see your spending snowball into something much more damaging.

You will struggle to adapt to the budget at first. However, you must do so, and hold one another accountable should you slip up. These mistakes are okay as long as you don’t make a habit of it, but it will take more work and effort to get yourself back on track after slipping up. If you don’t want to deal with such a hassle, then you must stick to your budget as closely as possible.

Have A Plan for Debt and More

Developing a plan before making any significant financial changes is always encouraged. It will prepare you both for running into trouble and make any issues more comfortable to manage.

These debt plans can include credit card debt, student loans, or car financing. Knowing how much you can put towards your debt each month will ensure you can pay it off more efficiently, and before you know it, you’ll be entirely debt-free, which is something everyone should strive for. Once you have cleared your debt, whether this is short term or long term, you can start thinking about how you are going to live more comfortably.

Easy Living

Budgeting for a better life is never easy. Still, if you have the support of someone else besides you to help keep you on the level and prevent either of you from making any silly decisions, you’ll find that your lifestyle will flourish, so you can do everything you’ve ever wanted to, and more.

Good Environmental Practices For Your Electronic Products

We live in a society that is built around consumption. We buy things, we use them, and then we dispose of them. Everything is geared around replacing the items that we bought. A new car every few years. New clothes. New furniture. Fashions and styles will shift continually and, in order to keep up with these, we need to keep consuming and getting rid of our old unwanted items.

But this leads to massive amounts of waste. Many items are not degradable, meaning that they just end up being heaped high in landfill sites. All the while, these products may well have drawn on the planet’s natural resources when they were created and when we use them. This adds up to a looming environmental crisis that we all must play our part in addressing.

While big businesses and governments should hold the blame for creating a society that is geared toward just a heightened demand for goods, it is down to all of us to get involved in the solution by changing our habits.

Make Do And Mend

Very often, when we have something in our home that is starting to wear down, or has a broken part, we discard the entire thing and replace it. A chair leg is starting to work loose, it gets disposed of. A TV breaks, it is replaced. But very often, it would be cheaper and easier to repair these items and extend their lifespan by a few additional years.

For many home electronics items and household appliances, you can buy spare parts. For example, when your fridge breaks, buy a new purifying filter and have it fitted.

If you are handy at DIY you may be able to fit these replacement parts or carry out repairs yourself, however, if you are not, there are many repair companies available that will be able to help you.

Reduce

When it comes to buying new electrical items for your home, ask yourself if you really need it. There are constantly new gimmicks getting created that will improve on an existing product, however, quite often, we don’t need these features and end up getting sucked into replacing our existing items with ones we don’t need.

If you can reduce the amount that you buy and consume, you will reduce the amount of waste that you contribute to this planet.

Recycle

When it comes to the natural end to a product’s life, if you are sure that nothing more can be done for it, and it cannot be broken down and sold for spare parts, then you should ensure that you are taking responsible steps to dispose of it.

Make sure that any electrical items that you are disposing of are recycled in the appropriate way. You can either look to take these to the municipal waste disposal site for recycling, or you can find a private company that specializes in the disposal and recycling of broken electrical items to ensure that as much gets recycled as possible.

5 Common Style Mistakes to Avoid

There’s nothing better than leaving the house knowing that you look your absolute best. It makes us feel confident, and the whole world just seems a little bit brighter, doesn’t it? Alas, the days when we feel like that can sometimes be few and far between. It feels as if we’re just waking up, hoping that everything will click. However, there are ways that you can nudge things in the right direction. In many cases, people are just guilty of making a couple of small style mistakes. If they avoided them, then things would look a lot rosier! Below, we take a look at some of the common errors that people tend to make.

Old Favorites

Everyone has those go-to items of clothing that they just love to wear. However, it’s always important to remember that all things must pass; time waits for no-one or nothing. After some time, your old favorites will begin to look a little, well, old. If you’re beginning to see threads, or the color has faded somewhat, then look at retiring the item. It might sting a little, but it will at least give you the perfect excuse to hit the stores and buy some new items.

The Wrong Shape

People tend to look at items of clothing and decide whether it’s a nice piece or not. But that shouldn’t be the end of the journey; you cannot just buy the items you think are nice, and expect them all to be winners. That’s because it’s not just the design of clothes that count, but also the shape. In order to look your best, you’ll need to determine your body shape, and buy clothes that work well with that shape. This approach will also apply to your accessories too, such as your glasses, which can have a big impact on how you look. Before buying some, be sure to read an eyeglasses buying guide first. They are something you’ll be wearing every day, so it’s important to have the right ones!

Religiously Following Trends

It’s good to be aware of trends, and dip into them from time to time, but you shouldn’t be a slave to them. For starters, you’d end up spending far too much money on clothes! Instead, look at developing your sense of style. That’ll provide the bulk of your wardrobe, and it’s way more interesting to have your own look rather than copying other people’s anyway.

Going Too Hard

Here’s a good piece of advice: only wear one nice item of clothing at once. Some people try to ensure everything that they’re wearing is perfect, but it ends up looking a little overcooked. Give the one nice item you’re wearing the chance to take center-stage.

Dress for the Event

Finally, a crucial and underrated piece of style advice: always dress for the event. You should have various outfits in the wardrobe, so that you have something to wear for casual events, BBQs, formal affairs, work, and so on. You’ll always feel as if you’re wearing the right thing.

Bettering Family Finances with Pacific Collection Group

This post is sponsored by Diamond Bloggers. All opinions expressed are my own. Thank you.

When you start a family, you’ll be given different pieces of advice and financial warnings. You’ll be told that kids keep you up all night which they do. That your personal time is seriously cut down which it is. How incredible it is to have children and to love someone more than you ever thought possible. What people won’t talk to you about is the cost of having a family. That information they’ll let you figure that one out all by yourself.

Have you seen people driving around in expensive sports cars and planning luxury vacations? You can feel fairly certain those people don’t have kids. Or, if they do they have discovered the best ways to make your finances work for you when you have a family. That’s what we’re going to explore today, and we’ll start by looking at the right way to manage your budget.

Setting Up Your Big Monthly Budget

Everyone should have some sort of budget that they stick to each month or year. It will help ensure that you don’t spend more than you should and that you are able to keep those costs under complete control.

With a budget, it’s also possible to make sure that you have money in savings and that’s important. Most young couples don’t even have a thousand in savings, and that means they have no money at all for unexpected costs such as the potential bills they might have to pay. So, how do you set up your family budget the right way?

Well, you need to think about all the money you make. Include everything in this sum such as side hustles and investments. We’re going to look at both these options a little further down. Now that you have your total you need to look at your outgoings.

If you’re not sure of this, take a peek at your monthly statements. Look for patterns to give you an idea of what typically leaves your account each month. This will include food bills, energy bills, gas for the car and the list goes on.

When you’ve noticed and confirmed these patterns try and find cheaper ways to live your daily life without affecting your lifestyle. It can include anything from your bank charges, insurance, transportation cost. You can even go as far as getting cheaper energy rates. It will make your expenses more manageable and help you manage your finances better.

Once you have a substantial list subtract them all. Now, take a third of the total and mark that as savings. What you have left is roughly the amount you have to spend on luxuries, unexpected costs, and little things for your kids. It should be a fairly substantial amount, and that probably makes you wonder where your money goes. You definitely don’t have that much left at the end of the month do you?

Stop Overspending

It’s so easy to overspend and let’s look at the food shop as an example. By looking at your statements, you should be able to see how much on average you spend on your food each month. You want to work to cut this down as much as possible, and it’s easy to do.

One of the best ways to reduce your monthly food shop is to not be a slave for brands. We all have our favorites brands, but when you take a good hard look, you’ll see they aren’t really special at all. Offering more or less the same and when you realize that you’ll be able to look for the cheapest one every time you shop. Then, you can think about looking at vouchers and coupons online.

There are plenty of sites online like Coupons.com that provide great deals for parents looking for cheap deals on products that they buy regularly or even every time they head to the superstore.

Of course, food shopping is just one of the areas that you might be overspending where costs can be easily adjustable. Another example would be your energy bills. If you have a home full of kids then you might find it’s difficult to keep the energy bills under control.

That’s particularly true when you think about the amount of technology that you are probably using on a regular basis in your home. If you have teenagers, it’s possible that there’s a TV in each room along with a games console or computer. How do you keep the electric costs down when we’re all this tech orientated?

Well, you should be checking out the tech you purchase carefully. All tech on the market today has energy ratings. If you want to keep your energy bills low, you just need to make sure you’re buying tech with the best ratings on the market. In no time at all, you’ll find your bills are reduced down to size.

You might also want to think about getting a smart meter. With a smart meter, you’ll be able to find out exactly what is costing you the most money. That way you can replace it or take more control over how much that device is being used. But be careful of false economy saves.

For instance, if the dryer is costing you more money, don’t stuff it with clothes for fewer cycles. Ultimately, this will just lead to you needing to put it on, again and again, to get clothes dry anyway.

End Fixed Cost Payments

What about the costs in your budget that are fixed? Are there ways to reduce these such as car insurance or even medical plans? Both will be essential for a family to guarantee that you have the resources needed to protect and take care of your children. The answer is that you can reduce these costs.

All you need to do is use price comparison sites. This will help you find the best deal each time you get the chance to renew these plans. For instance, you can use Gomedigap for more info on the best Medicare insurance companies to guarantee that you do get the greatest deal for your money every time. It’s important that you look at this coverage carefully to get the best savings and everything you need for your family.

Boost Your Budget

If when you look at your total that you have to spend at the end of the month, it’s less than you’d like there are ways to boost your earnings. Investments are a smart choice here, and the basic option would be a savers account that provides a high level of interest. That way a little money will be added without you even needing to try. You can look at the best savings accounts on NerdWallet.com.

Or, how about a side hustle. There are lots of choices here including working at home. When you look into these, you’ll find that the market is wide open and there are lots of available opportunities to help you make more money.

Helpful Advice For Any New Mothers Out There

Bringing up a child is hard. You knew that before you’d even had a baby because it’s the only thing any parent ever says. Of course, you can only truly understand what they mean once you have a child of your own (funnily enough, that’s the other thing parents are always saying).

It can feel quite daunting when you consider your many responsibilities as a new mother. You love your baby, but you’re constantly worried as to whether you’re doing the best possible thing for him or her. Here’s some helpful advice for any new mothers out there.

Learn how to do the basics.

Mother’s intuition will help you raise your baby to a certain extent, but there are certain things that every new mother has to learn. Many moms pretend that they always knew what they were doing, but there are plenty of things that you have to learn how to master. For starters, you might need to come to grips with changing a diaper (unless you practiced on baby dolls first). Do some research if you’re curious as to the best way to change a diaper.

It might seem like you’re diffusing a bomb at first, but it becomes easier after the first few times. In fact, it becomes second nature. You’ll be changing diapers in your sleep after a week. And, as most moms can attest, you have the do a lot of your motherly chores whilst half-asleep, so it’s good to make sure that these things become a habit.

Get help.

Whether you have the support of a partner or you’re taking care of your baby as a single mother, you’re never truly alone. You can always turn to friends or family to support you through this journey. And, even if you can’t, there are other support networks other for new mothers who are struggling. Do some research in your local area because you’ll probably find several groups for mothers who are in the exact same situation as you.

Every new mother is excited and terrified in equal measure. It’s an overwhelming journey, so you need people who can provide you with the support you need to get through it. Whether you have friends and family to help you or not, it’s always good to join a group of fellow “new mothers” because they’re best equipped to understand what you’re experiencing. You might even make some new friends throughout the process.

Sometimes the advice new mothers need can be found in useful resources like the works of notable child-rearing experts including Sam Haskell. Resources to aid your journey into motherhood by way of your bookshelf or digital reader of choice.

Listen to your baby and your gut.

As mentioned in the introduction, mother’s intuition is a thing. You need to trust your feelings when it comes to your baby. You might be tempted to listen to friends or family members who tell you how you should be raising your child, but if you disagree with the advice they give because it doesn’t feel right for your baby then you need to trust your gut. Every child is unique in terms of their needs.

You need to listen to your baby so that you can give them what they need. You shouldn’t be too rigorous with a schedule during the early weeks or months of their life. If they’re hungry then feed them; if they’re tired then let them rest. You need to get in tune with your child to figure out what works best for them.

Sleep.

This piece of advice is one of the most important: sleep. You need to make sure you and your baby try to get as much rest as possible throughout this journey. Obviously, your baby will be very restless throughout the night for the first few months of their life, but you have to keep working on creating a bedtime routine for the pair of you. The best way to be productive throughout the day and look after your child well is to sleep properly.

Most of us need about 8 hours of sleep in order to function efficiently. You just need to get into a pattern of going to bed early and getting up early. The earlier you wake, the more you can get done before your baby wakes (if possible) or whilst you’re taking care of your little one.

You also need to make sure you’re getting a good quality of rest. Avoid electronics before you go to bed because bright lights stimulate the mind and make it harder to fall asleep. Make sure your environment is as dark as possible. Get blinds or curtains that block out all light.

When you’re dealing with a baby who’s restless, you need to get every minute of sleep you possibly can. If your baby sleeps in the afternoon then join them for a nap; get all the sleep you can manage. Even as they get older and start sleeping better, your life as a mom will continue to be demanding. Sleeping properly is essential to ensuring that you can function properly as a mother (and stay healthy).

Don’t burden yourself.

This final point is crucial. Your mental health is so important when it comes to the wellbeing of your baby. If you’re happy and healthy then your baby will be happy and healthy. You need to be the best possible mother to your child, and that starts by taking care of yourself.

Avoid burdening yourself with unnecessary chores and tasks that don’t benefit your baby’s life (or your life). So many mothers worry unnecessarily about things they read in books or on the internet. As we’ve discussed throughout this article, you need to trust your own gut. If something’s non-essential then cut it out of your daily routine. And if a fellow mother offers you something that they never used for their own baby then say ‘no’ because you won’t need to use it either.

Bringing up a baby is a journey. You’ll learn new things along the way, just as they will, but there’s no reason to be hard on yourself. Accept help from people so that you can take breaks from time to time. Take a long bath to reward yourself after a long day. You’ve earned it.
