10 Things To Not Pay For In 2015!

wedndsday

Hello again, savvy savers! If you are anything like me, than you are always looking for extra ways to widdle down your family budget. I myself am always looking for the next steal-of-a-deal out there, and sometimes I get so bogged down by looking for the best deals that I forget to keep my eyes peeled for the stuff out there that’s completely free. Fear not–that stuff still exists, and there is a lot of it! So for this weeks Wednesday Ways To Save, here is your ultimate guide to the top 10 things in 2015 that you should be getting for free.

  1. Kids eat free: As the average American family has three children, going out can be a drain on the wallet; this is also the reason so many financial gurus, such as Dave Ramsey, advise against going out. Thankfully, there are about 78 restaurants that offer nights where kids can eat completely free! I have complied a list, here, where kids eat free with any adult purchase. So, if you take into consideration the cost of two cheaper adult options, with water as a drink, free meals for the kiddos, and gratuity, than its often cheaper to eat out than to cook at home for higher ticket meal items such as ribs, steak, seafood, and buffets.
  2.  Shipping: Many of the best deals don’t require you even stepping foot inside a store, and the cost of shipping should not be a deal breaker this year for you. Before you place an order be sure to check sites such as RetailMeNot, get a 30-day pass from ShopRunner, or call your stores customer service line, which usually will give you free ship codes for your trouble!
  3.  Free access to warehouse clubs: Warehouse clubs like Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s all make you pay to shop at their locations, and often times the memberships are well worth the investment; especially if you throw a Living Social or Groupon membership deal into the mix. However, anyone can shop at these warehouses for free simply by requesting a day pass at the customer service desk! Please note that as you are not a member, you will be required to load the funds you will pay to a gift card that is specific to the store you’re shopping at; this is also a great tool to keep your budget while shopping in-club! Consider using a portion of tax returns, and a free one-day pass, to attend your local warehouse club, and buy a years worth of meats for freezer cooking meals, upcoming holidays, and the like!
  4. Amazon Prime: Everyone can get a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, so everyone should be taking advantage of it! Sign up for your free Amazon Prime trial, here!
  5. Free eBooks and audiobooks:  More and more eBooks are becoming free. Audible.com offers one free audiobook and a free 30-day trial of their service for first-time users. You can also access a ton of free audiobooks on Librivox. Also checkout this post for 101 free Amazon e-books, here!
  6. Free gift cards: There are so many ways to earn free gift cards, so why not take advantage of all of these ways to get them? Applications like Ibotta, Snap by Groupon, and Checkout51, will all allow you to earn gift cards just for uploading your receipts. You can also earn gift cards easily with Bing. You can also earn points for cards by taking online surveys, using Swagbucks, Viggle, ExpoTv, Recyclebank, or Crowdtap, too!
  7. Free video-streaming: Last year I decided to cut the cable and it’s been such a great decision, as I’ve been able to save my family $1,344.00; you can read about this journey, here. If you’re still unsure about whether this should be your next move or not—then you should give it a try for free! You can do a trial of video-streaming services for free like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime Instant Video. In fact, I actually prefer streaming, can customize my shows, and not expose my family to unnecessary commercials! I also use savings from iBotta and Checkout51, by way of paypal account earnings, to pay for my subscriptions monthly, too!
  8. Free magazine subscriptions: I never pay for magazines, with the exception of All You, which I purchase through offers listed when subscribing to free magazines! Be sure to check out my Free Magazine Section, here
  9. Free photography sessions: Need to send photos to the grandparents of your newborn baby? Getting married this Spring? Photography can be so expensive, but you don’t have to pay to keep those memories. You can search Craigslist, local Facebook groups, or check your local college and university’s arts department for photographers who need to build a portfolio. For smaller engagements where you will be taking the photos yourself, checkout Groovebook for 100 free prints with the code, LADYGROOVE!
  10. Personal hygiene items: If you follow many of my daily deal and weekend drugstore shopping scenario posts, you know that there are many personal care items that can be scored for free! Just as a reminder—oral care, travel size items, glucose meters, printer paper and other personal items can be completely free.

So, be sure to join me this year and vow to not spend unnecessary funds this year on the above mentioned items! Your pocketbook will be happier, your stockpile stocked, and your home running smoother than ever before!

10 Items To Start Saving in 2015!

20140329160620!Recycle_Bin

Hello again, savvy savers! Today finds us with a new list of the things we should all be saving in 2015. Not only will reducing the amount of stuff you throw away make you a champ in the eco-consciousness, Greener Living category, it’ll also save your wallet a bundle!

The following is a list of the top ten items you should be saving this year:

  1. Plastic ice cream tubs: These buckets are incredibly handy, and just the right size and durability for a lot of outdoor uses. They’re perfect for storing rock salt, fertilizer, under-the-sink compost bins, supplements, pet food, and more. For long trips, consider putting an individual portion of ice in each one, then add your food and stack in your cooler. They hold up and keep your food organized and cool to boot!
  2. Mesh Popsicle bags: Storing garlic, onions, apples, and potatoes in these bags will provide you with a great storage bag, and will help your produce last twice as long!
  3. Plastic Deli Meat Containers: I have one word for you, leftovers! These make the best containers for leftovers! An added bonus is that these tubs are dishwasher safe; mine have been through the dishwasher dozens of times and still seal tight. Plus they’re exactly the right size for a meal-sized portion of food!
  4. Plastic grocery bags:  Use them to line bathroom wastebaskets, as padding in fragile packages, or as a fabulous and reusable way to package up delicate holiday decorations.
  5. Old Sheets: They make fabulous drop cloths for house-painting projects and art projects. They also make great furniture covers to protect your stuff when moving!
  6. Old Socks: Socks make perfect dusting rags. Old socks can also be cut at the ends and used as pads on your Swiffer. Mark these socks with a permanent red marker in a large X to easily identify them when you run them through the wash later.
  7. Milk Cartons: Cut the top half off, and have an awesome scooper for just about anything. Also, freezing water in milk jogs during the summer, placed in front of fans on a towel, will help cool your room by as much as 10 degrees!
  8. Holiday wrapping paper: Use cheap rolls after the holidays to line drawers or shelves!
  9. Metal Hangers: Hangers can be used to make cheap, inexpensive wreath forms! Hangers with clips, can give the hanger detached, and use the clips for chips!
  10. Corks: Corks can be used to scour delicate pots and pans. They can also be glue together to make inexpensive trivets, and can also used as small, cheap pin cushions in your sewing drawer or basket.

These free, fun ideas are sure to save you money, and time, this year!

After Christmas Sales Tips!

images

Hello again, savvy savers! The holidays are almost over, and you know what that means, After-Christmas sales!

For anyone on a budget, after-Christmas sales are a perfect opportunity to get all the gifts that Santa forgot to bring, staples for next years get-togethers, school functions, and the like, often at 50 to 70% off. Unlike Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales which seek to mark the beginning of holiday shopping, the real savvy savers know that the true sales come after  Old St. Nick!

However, not all bargains are made equally, and when your budget is tight and every penny counts.

download

Use these tips to spend as little as possible while getting the best and final bang for your buck this holiday season:

  1. Look for luxury. The day after Christmas will find luxury home good, small appliances, linens, and coats drastically reduced; be sure to not return policies for these sales!
  2. Plan A Strategy. After-Christmas sales are a great time to buy basics, especially for work. Stores are trying to clear out darker colors to make way for spring pastels. Before heading out to the store, look online for coupons, deals, apps, and try to match these deals with holiday gift cards.
  3. Think Big. This is a good time to buy big ticket items, if that is what you really need, but it also a good time to go shopping at bigger stores. End-of-year deals on TVs, stereos, and tablets will be at low, low prices starting today for the next week!
  4. Be Realistic. A bargain is only a bargain if you really needed it. Otherwise, it is just money you spent unnecessarily, and coupled with long lines and grumpy gooses abound, being realistic will be your lifesaver today! Keep this motto in mind!
  5. Check online. Many stores, such as Overstock and Amazon, have started offering after-Christmas deals on Christmas Day itself. Check online to get an idea how the price will drop in your neck of the woods.
  6. The Have-To-Have Items. Stores want to entice shoppers to come in to their shops in the hopes that you will see something you just “have to have” and spend more than you intended. Allow yourself one splurge item, and then go about your jolly way!
  7. Newspapers. You will find significantly better coupons in your local sales circulars the day after Christmas than online for items such as holiday-themed paper products, ornaments, and the like. Be sure to buy the Friday edition that precedes Christmas, as well as the one for the day after Christmas.

As well, there will be numerous deals at local retailers, especially discount and drugstores, for everyday goods. Be sure to price match, coupon shop, and throw as many app deals as possible into the mix. While looking for these end of season deals, he sure to look for the following:

  • Winter Clothing; coats, robes, slippers, and pajamas will go as low at 90% off at many retailers, such as Sears!
  • Toys and Small Gifts; consider stocking up for gift closet staples for Easter and Mothers Day, especially on spa and gift sets.
  • Decorations; Christmas trees, lights, decor, wrapping paper and more will all be 50 to 75% off within a few weeks after Christmas.
  • Fitness Products; retailers will start capitalizing on the public’s needs for weight loss resolutions, and online retailers will capitalize on these items! Look for hot deals on yoga balls, yoga mats, treadmills, kettle bells, and the like!
  • Food; After Christmas is prime time to scoop up some serious deals in the grocery aisles. Baking supplies, wine, cheese and seasonal flavors of products are all on the way out, for as such as 90% off at discount stores such as Dollar General, Family Dollar, Big Lots, and even the Dollar Tree.
  • Consumer Electronics;  Retailers want to stock store shelves with new 2015 models on the way, so they want to unload last year’s models and free up shelf space. Look out for great deals on washer and dryer sets, TV’s, gaming equipment, headphones, ear buds, and vacuums!

So, there are a few tips for after Christmas sales, shopping, and strategies!

Weekly Reflections: Goals For The Week Ahead!

download5

Hello again, savvy savers! I wanted to end my weekly posts by bring the week to a close with a post about the reflections on this past week.

Goals For The Coming Week:

  • Walk 1/2 mile daily.
  • Finish my Motivated Moms Planner Chores daily.
  • Read for 1 hour nightly; this week will be filled with Dickens, the Gospel of Luke, and the Gift of the Magi.
  • Prepare homemade cookies for my husband Daniel, AKA, Santa.
  • Listen to holiday music.
  • Give out “You’ve Been Jingled” Gifts to neighbors.
  • Face-time with family and friends!
  • See local lights as a family.
  • Watch a holiday movie daily.
  • Clean out my coupon binder, and start moving to my new method for organizing coupons and blog/videotape my progress for the blog; this will be done today as their are no coupon inserts nationally this weekend.
  • Sleep eight hours a night.
  • TTC; take vitamins, continue with yoga, etc.

Reflections For This Week:

This has been a very trying week for me personally, from family members being hospitalized, to co-workers leaving their work for me to finish, I have had to re-learn what it means to be a gracious steward this holiday season!

Though this is a work in progress, here are a few things I am personally working on:

  1. Realizing that people will fall short of my expectations, and that this is okay! This is such a hard concept for me. I grew up with the idea of seeking to find good in others, hoping that if you care for others they will care for you, and then later realizing that this may not always be the case, is so hard!
  2. Understanding that the opinions held by family members, in terms of myself, is not a true reflection of my truth;, understanding that everyone is seeking that sweet spot in life, a niche where they can flourish is an amazing concept, but should not come at the expense of others.
  3. Being aware that selfish, communally awkward behavior in others is just icky; sometimes even holiday cards and gifts can come dripping with slights and issues, and should still be taken in stride!
  4. Coming to terms with the idea that the disdain that others project on yourself, is a reflection on how they perceive themselves; recently a family member carelessly mentioned to me that “they did not sign-up for…this or that,”  without thinking that in my world, I had not either. Understanding that its okay to emotionally say no and walk away from toxic family members is a work in progress for me.
  5. Being Gracious. I am working on being able to be distant, yet gracious and graceful with others; its a work in progress.
  6. Lastly, knowing that its still okay to send thank you cards for gifts received, even when friends and family refer to this act as passe and antiquated!

So, there’s a little bit of a peek into my semi-charmed little world this past week.

How have you all spent your week? How much have you accomplished? Where did you fall short? What areas of your life could have used a photoshopping glaze, instead of a keepin’ it real exterior? I’d love to hear about it!

Here’s to the holidays,

Battle of the Bulge, Budget-Style: Holiday Eating Tips!

unnamed (1)

Hello again, savvy savers! For this weeks Battle of the Bulge, budget-Style, I wanted to share a few of the ways I plan to stick to my diet this Christmas!

Whether you love or dread the holidays, one thing for sure is: it’s hard to stick to your diet. A plate, or three, lovingly heaped with turkey, gravy, buttery mashed potatoes and all the trimmings can blow any progress you’ve made in the previous months. Couple this with the various request of my baking skills… get togethers, church fairs, work banquets, and the like! Treats are everywhere!

Before your grumpy cat face overtakes your entire mood, fear not for there are many things you can do to stick to your diet and still enjoy a Thanksgiving meal!

Here are some “ho ho ho” help to get you through the holidays as an Eater:

  • You know the old wives tale, to never to go food shopping on an empty stomach, right? The same applies to the holidays! Never sit down to a holiday meal on an empty stomach. Eat a high protein snack beforehand, such as a 1/2 cup of almonds and a piece of string cheese, or a small apple, and drink a full glass of water to alleviate overeating at the table.
  • If you’re invited over to someone’s home, bring along a tray of veggies, and low fat dip, so that you’ll have something healthy to snack on; low fat cream cheese and two teaspoons of Greek vinaigrette make an awesome option.
  • If you are a turkey day traditionalist, and feel Thanksgiving cannot go on if the substitution of any family favorites commences, foods, then commit to limiting how much you eat, plan to eat one plate and that’s it.
  • The Golden Rule: Portion control is key here. A serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards; mashed potatoes (1/2 cup) about the size of 1/2 a baseball; use a spoon to measure out gravy instead of pouring it on, etc.
  • Commit to 20 minutes of exercise, even on Thanksgiving. Take a twenty minute walk with family members or friends in between courses. If the weather permits, play a game of touch football in the backyard. Just stay active!
  • Try to avoid empty calories. Stay clear of sugary sodas, punches, and mixed drinks or even better, water.

If You’re Doing the Cooking

  • Serve twice the number of non-starchy vegetables dishes as you will gravy, turkey, or calorie-laden dishes; think salads, crudites, butternut squash soup, etc.
  • Limit the amount of courses you serve this year. By limiting the number of dishes, you will stress less, and spend more time enjoying the holiday, food-free!
  • Make your mashed potatoes low fat by using skim or almond milk, think sour cream over butter. Also; consider making creamed cauliflower instead!
  • Instead of the array of desserts, pies, tarts, and the traditionally fair served every year, why not make an angel food cake and top it with berries and low fat whipped cream, or perhaps a low-fat, budget-friendly berry trifle instead.

I hope these tips help to keep you, and your waste, on the thin and narrow this Thanksgiving!

Love and best wishes,
