NOW OPEN

Hello again, savvy savers! I am so excited to share with all you my Easter Porch Reveal! One of my favorite parts of our home is the fun porch, and I have been more than excited to decorate it seasonally!  So, when I was asked to be apart of the Spring Craft Blog Hop, I totally jumped all over it!  My theme was wandering, as I think Spring is the perfect time of year for a long, explorative walk in a meadow, field, or in the country to see all of nature blooming with new life!

easter porch reveal

The porch centers around a small, rustic school chair found the side of the road in my neighborhood, and with the help of a can of Kelley Green spray paint, I had a new porch stand!  Please note, I didn’t bother making sure I got perfect coverage on either coats, because I knew I was going to do some sanding and wanted a lot of layers to show through. To finish it I sprayed it with a Polyurethane to finish up my colored layers. And, although the chair was cute by itself, I knew I wanted to use several new finds I picked up after the holidays in town to use in conjunction with a with a basket, a few lanterns, banners, and themed stuffed animals I had on hand to finish the look.

For this project I used the following materials:

  • 1 Rattan Wreath Forms; on hand.
  • 2 Wreath Stands; on hand.
  • 2 Bunny Hangers; on hand.
  • 1 Easter Egg Holder; on hand.
  • 6 dozen plastic Easter eggs; on hand.
  • Antique Watering Can; on hand.
  • 2 Spring Ceramic Lanterns; on hand.
  • Burlap Ribbon; on hand.
  • Vintage 1990 Crayola Bunny; gift from my husband.
  • 2 Spring banners; on hand.
  • 2 Stuffed rabbits; gift from my husband.
  • Hot Glue Sticks; on hand.
  • Chair; on hand.
  • Hanging Shamrock Mobiles; gift from my husband.
  • Stuffed Scentsy Duck; on hand.
  • Hanging Sign; on hand; I created a duplicate sign I saw in town with items in my craft room for my home office.
  • Rattan Swag; on hand.
  • Black ribbon; on hand.

Total Cost: Free!

I just love how simple, clean, and inexpensive this project was. What’s better than free, no? With the cleaner lines, empty spaces spring holidays give us, its almost a breath of fresh air! What really speaks to me is the “Wandering sign and wreath on my front door, duplicates I copycatted from something I saw in-town, with items around the house for free! The sign fits right into this porch-scape, too! I also love the vintage, 1990 Crayola bunny my husband found for me on eBay; this was a replacement for one I received on my 7th Easter, which even still has it’s hang-tag and original, wrapped trio of crayons, and I treasure it! The design, effort, and concept was an simple as it comes!

So, seriously guys, how fun did this turn out?  I am so beyond happy with it! I am so happy with how my porch turned out!

Tutorial Tuesday: $0.15 DIY Puffy Paint!

homemade-puffypaint

Calling all crafters! For this weeks Tutorial Tuesday, I am sharing with you my recipe for Puffy Paint! This recipe will cost you $0.15 a bottle, a savings of $2.75 a bottle, from commercial blends! Since one of my two majors was Art History, I often spent time while at home, on breaks from college, experimenting with Art mediums, and this was one of my concocting sessions! With so many kiddos soon to be back out of school for the winter holidays in a few short weeks, this would make for an awesome indoor project!

Here’s how I make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Room-Temperature Water
  • 1/2 Cup Table Salt
  • 4  Drops Food Coloring, per batch

Instructions:

  1.  In a glass bowl, mix the salt and flour together.
  2. Add the water slowly, whisking it together, be careful not have any lumps.
  3. Add 3 drops of food coloring to mixture; tempera paint, or natural fruit or vegetable juice, such as beet, mint, spinach, or carrot juice, can be used as well.
  4. Add contents to a squeeze bottle; I found three-packs of squeeze bottles at the Dollar Tree for $1.00! Use a separate bottle per color.
  5. Please note, paint will dry with 3 hours, and paint tends to break-up after use in bottles, so when done, clean out bottles after each use.

Ways To Save At Petco!

notepad_page1

For this weeks Wednesday Ways To Save, I want to discuss some of the ways I shop at my favorite pet store, Petco! Here a few tips to save at Petco:

  1. Sign-up for the Petco Rewards Card, you will earn 5% cash back on every purchase, a $5 certificate when you spend $100, and receive special coupons. Sign up here!
  2. Online saving certificates are now able to be added right to your Petco Pals Card card, saving you time, money, and ink!
  3. Check out Petco’s online coupons here!
  4. Petco has an awesome price-match policy!
  5. According to their official online corporate price-match policy, they state that they will price match any local ad within a 20-mile radius of their store. Also, as of May 1st, they will also accept Amazon.com price-matching, via mobile devices! How awesome is that? As Amazon’s awesome Subscribe & Save Program often delves out awesome pet treat, food, and litter deals, this should come in very handy when price matching at your local Petco! Petco will also price match any competitors store, including co-op and feed stores, within a 100 mile radius.
  6. During the holidays be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Holiday calendars, priced around $4.00, which have coupon packs valued at over $50.00 each calendar, and a portion of the proceeds go to the Petco Animal Foundation. Please keep in mind, these calendars are also tax deductible, with saved receipts!
  7.  Be sure to check out the various managers specials around the store; stores can be combined with manufacturer and store coupons, newspaper, printed, and the like. The special will be marked with orange labels, and though many of the products are starting to expire, they can be bagged in Ziploc bags, and frozen up to a year.
  8. Also, coupons that produce overage will be applied to other items in your cart.

Also, keep your eyes peeled in-store for “oops savings,” savings on products mislabeled or needing to be sold 120 days before expiration; these savings, which can be paired with triple stacked manufacturer, competitors in-store coupons/price matching, and online and in-store coupons (with one of each, per item), for saving upwards of 80-90% off!

So consider the following at checkout:

  • Look for a product with “oops savings, ” or  price matching items from a store within a 100 mile radius.
  • Then stack a manufacturer internet or newspaper coupon.
  • Add to this any competitors coupons.
  • Then pile a Petco online, in-store, or calendar coupon to these savings!
  • Any coupon overage will be applied to other items in your current transaction.
  • If you have any $5.00 rewards certificates, they can be applied, too!
  • You are looking at a substantial, if not free item!

So, there are a few ways I save at Petco! Even if you are not a pet parent, consider finding deals at your local Petco to donate to local kennels, shelters, in-store Petco Foundation bins, service animal charities, Alzheimer Service Animal Rehab Clinics, or to animal fostering programs in your neck of the woods today! Also, if you are a Petco shopper, please leave me a comment below and let me know the ways you save as well!

Today’s Project: My Saint Patrick’s Day Porch Reveal!

DAPPER ESSENTIALS

Hello again, savvy savers! I am so excited to share with all you my Saint Patrick’s Day Porch Reveal! One of my favorite parts of our home is the fun porch, and I have been more than excited to decorate it seasonally!  As my family is back at school for the spring semester, its time to got life back into a normal routine, and part of that for me is porch decor! So, when I was asked to be apart of the Spring Craft Blog Hop, I totally jumped all over it!  My husband and I are both of a matriarchal Irish ancestry, the Cavanaugh’s and the McCandless’s respectfully, so for us it’s a matter of family pride to show our Erin Go Braugh spirit this time of year!

It’s no blarney for me to tell you that this porch was as easy to put together, as it was economical! And, although the chair was cute by itself, I knew I wanted to use several new finds I picked up after the holidays in town to use in conjunction with a few Dollar Tree crafts I made from last year, and I also pulled a few of my lanterns together with several small Celtic Crosses, plaques, and plates to finish the look.

For this project I used the following materials:

  • 1 Rattan Wreath Forms; $0.50, picked up at Walmart, free with Walmart Savings Catcher funds.

  • Polyurethane (on hand).
  • Chair (free).
  • Hanging Shamrock Mobiles; gift from my husband.
  • Large bunch of shamrock tinsel; on hand.
  • Hanging Welcome sign, gift from my husband.
  • Door Mat, Amazon (used Amazon Gift Card, earned from survey points for purchase).

Total Cost: Free!

I just love how simple, clean, and inexpensive this project was. What’s better than free, no? With the cleaner lines, empty spaces spring holidays give us, its almost a breath of fresh air! What really speaks to me is my husband’s Bless This Irish Home Sign fits right into this porch-scape, too! The design, effort, and concept was an shenanigan-free as it comes! The best part of this design was it sparked memories for my husband Daniel, who recanted to me he story of him playing in the Dublin Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, while a member of the drum line for the University of Southern Mississippi’s band, the Pride, while in college. Seeing on smile on that man’s face made my day.

So, seriously guys, how fun did this turn out?  I am so beyond happy with it! I am so happy with how my porch turned out!

I just love how simple, clean, and inexpensive this project was. What’s better than free, no? With the cleaner lines, empty spaces spring holidays give us, its almost a breath of fresh air! How To Water-Start Spring Bulbs!

water starting spring bulbs

Hello again, savvy savers! For this weekends Gardening On A Budget Post, I wanted to share a new project I’ve just started around my home, water starting paper white bulbs!

As any gardener can tell you, one of the most cheerful, uplifting sights in all of gardening is the arrival of Spring Bulbs! And while these hardy beauties only last a short spell, they are amazing in all of their simplicity!

While traditionally, bulbs are prepped and planted in Autumn for Spring arrivals, bulbs can be coaxed into blooming indoors. The required supplies are minimal, the process is simple, and assuming you have bulbs on hand, your cost may in fact be free! The process can also serve as a learning opportunity for the kiddos to both learn about the bulb planting process, as well as to bring a taste of Spring indoors in the winter!

Here’s how to get started:

Materials Needed:

  • 3 Spring Bulbs (on hand)
  • Water (on hand)
  • River Rocks (on hand)
  • Glass Vessel With a Large Opening (on hand)

Cost for project: Free!

Here’s the skinny on this project:

  1.  Select three bulbs; while I chose paper white purchased after he holidays for under $1.00, you can pick up bublbs from most retailers, inlcuding the Dollar Tree.
  2. All bulbs should be stored in cool, dark spaces in your home;  temperatures generally between 38 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit. The vegetable bin in your refrigerator is a good place to store bulbs, in brown paper bags,
  3. To water start bulbs, start by cleaning and drying a glass vessel, or container.
  4. Take two handfuls of river rocks, pebbles, etc. in the bottom of the container; there must be at least four inches of stones.
  5. Place your bulb on top of the stones; the pointed ends of the bulbs should point straight up.
  6.  Leave an inch of space between them to allow for growth.
  7. Add water to the bowl so that the level is beneath the bulb but does not touch it. The pebbles will wick the water upward and feed the bulb, allowing roots to grow into the water, without rotting the base of the bulb.
  8. Place the bowl in a cool, dark area for an additional four weeks; under the sink is a great area.
  9. This encourages the roots to develop first, which allows each tulip plant to develop stronger leaves and stems.
  10. Check your water level weekly, and adjust water levels, or replace water levels, as needed.
  11. Once you have one inch of bulb growth, move your bulbs to a sunny, warm spot after roots have developed.
  12. Maintain the water level bi-weekly at this stage, so that it covers the roots but not the bulb.
  13. Colorful blooms will appear within a few a week at this stage.
  14. Once bulbs have stopped blooming, they can be planted in ground, traditionally for the next Spring!

As you can see from my paper whites, shown above, this project is simply beautiful in its simplicity!

Do you like growing Spring bulbs? What are your favorites? Please leave me a comment below!

Valentine's day front porch reveal 2

A few months ago I found this awesome red chair in a recess of our basement, and with the help of a can of School House Red spray paint, I had a new porch stand!  Please note, I didn’t bother making sure I got perfect coverage on either coats, because I knew I was going to do some sanding and wanted a lot of layers to show through. To finish it I sprayed it with a Polyurethane to finish up my colored layers.

And, although the chair was cute by itself, I knew I wanted to use several new finds I picked up after the holidays in town to use in conjunction with a few Dollar Tree crafts I made from last year.

For this project I used the following materials:

  • 1 Rattan Wreath Form, $1.00 from the Dollar Tree.
  • 2 Wreath Stands (on hand, but purchased from JoAnn Fabric’s, with coupon, for $5.99 in 2012).
  • 2 Mini Grapevine Wreaths JoAnn Fabrics $0.59 each with app coupon savings.
  • 2 packs covered hearts from the Dollar Tree, $0.25 each (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • 2 packs foam letters from the Dollar Tree, $0.25 each (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • 2 Valentine’s Day Ribbon Spools, $0.10 at Walmart (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014)
  • 2 Red lanterns from CVS Pharmacy (purchased after the Christmas holidays in 2014, used Quarterly ExtraCare Bucks, and paid nothing out of pocket).
  • 1 Burlap Sign, JoAnn Fabrics $1.89 (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • Hot Glue Sticks (on hand).
  • Red Spray Paint (on hand).
  • Polyurethane (on hand).
  • Chair (on hand).
  • Hanging Heart Decoration, JoAnn Fabrics $0.89 (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • Door Mat, Amazon (used Amazon Gift Card, earned from survey points for purchase).

Total Cost: $6.16

I loved putting this porch together, and with the use of three simple wreaths, a hanging heart and banner, as well as vintage chair and lantern pair, really makes this porch pop! I also love the use of my new door mat. The door mat reads, “Ask not for whom the dog barks, it barks for thee.” This is a joke for my UPS driver, who always asks, whom my pups, a Westie, Shih-Tzu, and Great Pyrenees are barking at, and now, there’s no question…pun intended!

I just love how simple, clean, and inexpensive this project was. With the cleaner lines and empty spaces spring holidays give us, its almost a breath of fresh air! I tend to decorate my porch for most holidays, and my inspiration, my Uncle Danny, who himself was a Valentine’s Day baby, always reminded me to “put love out in the world,” and though he is no longer with us, I hope my porch is representative of his great words. Love begets love.

So, seriously guys, how fun did this turn out?  I am so beyond happy with it! I am so happy with how my porch turned out!

Be sure to stay turned for next few weeks, to see my bedroom and back patio reveals, and new Mardi Gras crafts (inspired by my husband a Who Dat/ True Dat and NOLA fan), too!
