There are a few things I require each fall beyond great food, hot apple cider, and a heartfelt movie on the silver screen. Thankfully, critics and writers alike have raved about “Lost on a Mountain in Maine,” the inspiring true story, based on the book of the same name in 1939, shares the story of 12-year-old Donn Fendler, an adolescent separated from his family during a rapidly moving storm, who must fight to stay alive for nine days, while lost in the remote wilderness of northern Maine. Fendler’s disappearance captured national headlines and sparked an immense search, attracting hundreds of volunteers, to bring young Fendler home.
The film, directed by Andrew Boodhoo Kightlinger, written by Luke Paradise, and produced by Sylvester Stallone, helps viewers learn about Maine’s rough, rugged landscapes and inhospitable weather which can turn treacherous without notice. Set the Great Depression in the United States in the 1930s, and brought to life by an ensemble cast featuring Luke David Blumm as Donn Fendler, the story’s protagonist, along with Paul Sparks, Caitlin FitzGerald, Ethan Slater, and Bates Wilder.
Featuring real-life interviews of residents and notable historians, Lost on a Mountain in Maine, captures the mountain’s epic tales with vivid detail, including Fendler’s younger brother, Ryan Fendler, and mother Ruth Fendler. This movie is a captivating blend of documentary-style filmmaking and well-spun modern storytelling.
Sharing a young man’s faithful journal through harsh wilderness into the arms of an unexplained world, and even harder father, this tale of exuberant joy and personal freedom is perfect for fall days ahead.
