Good afternoon, savvy savers! For this weeks Beauty on a Budget, I wanted to share with you my recipe for Homemade Shampoo! After years of purchasing Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, I started making my own, and haven’t turned back since! My blend combines coconut milk and tea tree oil, and works well for all types of hair, including color treated hair! I can make an entire bottle of shampoo, a 8 ounce bottle for only $0.20!
I put my shampoo, and homemade conditioner (to be seen in an upcoming tutorial) back in the original bottles I previously used, washed out of course, and my family has yet to ever notice the difference!
Also worth noting, this blend is also excellent for natural curl patterns, like my own!
Here’s how to make this:
Ingredients:
- 1/8 cup coconut milk
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil
- 20 drops of tea tree oil
- 1/2 tsp olive oil
- 1/4 cup filtered water
Instructions:
- Combine all ingredients in an jar.
- Shake well to mix.
- This blend will last in-shower for up to a month.
- Shake before each use.
- Use about a teaspoon every time you shampoo.
- Enjoy!
Here’s to your inner beauty,

I made this, followed every instruction to the T, and it is very runny. I do however love the smell, help??
Be sure to check the amount of water you added, if it appears too runny. I’d give it another go!
Just read this, am going to try it! Do you have to let it sit for a month before using or is it able to use after making just last for about a month? Thank you!
As stated in the post, it will last for up to a month, in-shower. Thanks!
Do you use regular coconut oil or fractionated For the conditioner?
Hi!! I made your recipe but mine is watery!!! I saw Rachel had the same issue, not sure what I did wrong too!!! Still will use it though, just wondering!! Thanks
I think you may have added too much oil or milk. I just made some and its creamy and as intended. Please give it another try!
hi there, iv tried out your recipe for the shampoo & its turned out watery ;( any idea where i have gone wrong please. cheers rach x
Well the product is not full of emulsifiers like commercial brands, so its not going to be thick. I would suggest trying it one more time and seeing if that works better. Please let me know.
Thanks so much for sharing your post at the Say Gāday Saturday link up. I am featuring you today and have shared your post on Pinterest and Google+. Hope you can drop by and say g’day!
Best wishes,

Thank you so much for the mention! I am about to post about it! Thank you.
Fabulous idea. Thanks for sharing with Small Victories Sunday. I have been wanting to find healthy, “greener” ways to make our own home cleaners and beauty products. Pinning and sharing!
Thank you!
Great idea! Homemade shampoo solutions are so much better than storebought š — I actually switched to vinegar and baking soda… and I was quite incredulous it would work at first, but now almost a year later, my hair never has felt better or cleaner.
I’m glad you found a healthier (more frugal!) version of what your family enjoys… that is great — and I’m going to pin this for my friends who aren’t quite up to the hair regimen I’ve found to work for me.
Thank you!
Wow! What a cool idea! I can’t wait to try this, I have everything except for vitamin E oil. When you say coconut milk, now, I’ve purchased it and it’s separated in the can. Do I shake the can up first? Thanks! Stopping by from the Sunday Linky.
Thanks for stopping by! Yes, do shake or stir the coconut milk before adding it, from a can. Happy Easter!
OMGee! I love love love PM tea tree shampoo and conditioner. I’ll have to give this a try. Do you use canned coconut milk?
I use whatever I have on hand; as of late I have used the boxed varieties, as I get them free or with overage at the store, but they actually sell the cans at the Dollar Tree for $0.50, so sure! Thank you for stopping by, and be sure to subscribe!
Nicole, I want to share this on next week’s weekly roundup with a link back. LMK if that’s okay.
Absolutely, just let me know when you do so I can link-up! Thanks!
This sounds interesting. I love tea tree oil. So I imagine this doesn’t make suds…and it doesn’t make your hair oily?? I have very fine/thin hair and it gets oily very easily…but I’d like to try this. Thanks for sharing on Great Idea Thursday.
No, it doesn’t do either. Thank you for stopping by!
Looks like an interesting recipe – definitely a money saver! I’ve never even thought to use coconut milk in shampoo. š
Thank you for stopping by!

Have a nice day!!!
