Why We Love Ever Clean Cat Litter at Home

This post is sponsored by Chewy.com expressed here are my own.

Boo Raddley

This is Boo Radley. International cat of mystery. The cutest of kittens. He was saved at four months from a dog fighting ring where cats were bait. Out of a litter of 6, only he & his brother survived.

Despite a rocky start in life, Boo Radley has led a very charmed life. He was rescued by a local cat sanctuary where we were lovingly cared for prior to our adoption. While our family went through the adoption process knowing we would only able to adopt one kitten, it was not an easy day for us. As visiting the sanctuary was heartwrenching for our family.

Seeing row after row of beautiful, fuzzy faces, brought home for us how dire and necessary adopting, and not shopping, for our fuzzy friends was. After several very sad hours, we left the sanctuary with the most precious male tuxedo kitten, Boo Radley.

Saving that tiny, playful, precocious, ball of love from such an initially horrible situation felt to me, the right way, at the right time, of making a small difference in this world.

I know Boo Radley and the other cat’s just like him are appreciative of being adopted in his own pur-fect way. One of the greatest decisions we ever made was to bring Boo into our home and to make sure that Boo has the best life he can, we make sure to purchase food, toys, and litter products.

Tips for Better Screen Time at Home

Tips for Better Screen Time at Home

This year I’ve made a point of focusing on living a more simple life at home. A life that’s less busy, and helps to provide respite from stress, anxiety, and malaise at home. And, if I’m being completely honest, one area I’ve failed to exercise simplified reata, I’ve realized one area I’d like to work on is the amount of time I spend online: I’d like to spend less time looking at screens.

While I know that staring at a computer screen for hours on end isn’t good for my mood or eyesight, in many ways its an occupational hazard. As a social influencer I spend a lot of time online. On social media channels, my blog, Etsy shops, and other side hustles. So its easier said than done to simply lower the screen on my laptop and see what’s going on in the world around me.

I also love writing on my blog and checking out the posts of my community on social media, but all things in moderation, right? Which is why I’ve been more intentional this year about limiting my time online, there’s still room for improvement.

Keep in mind, I don’t have all the answers. But I do want to share some of the techniques I’m using to unplug little by little at home. So if you’re looking for better, more intentional screen time at home, here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Tips for Better Screen Time at Home

No screens before 9 am:

One of the biggest ways I’ve revolutionized my screen time at home this year has been by not opening a screen until after 9 am each morning. This allows me to get my family ready for school, my husband off to work, my pets walked and fed, and allow myself time to delve into a workout, shower, medication, and time with the word each day.

This also allows me to set the mood for my day ahead and not allow the discord of social media to alter my projections and aspirations for the day ahead.

No screen time between 1-2 pm each day:

I try to make a point of unplugging from social media for one hour each afternoon. This allows me to make sure I’ve eaten, to check on my pets, to prep dinner, and to take some time for myself. Which during the hot, humid summers here in Mississippi, often consists of reading a book from my local library. I call this time, gray matter building sessions.

Tips for Better Screen Time at Home

I do not check or answer emails after 7 pm:

By 7 pm each evening I’m spent. I need time to unwind. Time after my family is put to bed and pets are put in their crates to spend relaxing with my husband, catching up on his day, enjoying some one-on-one time together. I’m also a chronic insomniac. So I need several hours before bed without blue lights to help my mind settle down.

I also engage in a nighttime regime that starts at 7 pm that consists of sipping on sleepytime tea, diffusing lavender essential oil, and taking a melatonin supplement before bed. Products that often leave me blissfully drowsy and not in the proper mood nor mindset for answering emails each evening.

Ending my workday at 4 pm:

As a WAHM, your workday and family routine often meshes in a less than positive way. Which is why I have created the healthy boundary for myself at home that is centered around the idea that my workday ends at 4 pm promptly each afternoon.

This allows me time to unwind from my work schedule, to prepare for my family to come home, to give myself the gift of self-care, and most importantly, it forces me to properly engage in time blocking and time management each day. This helps me focus on goal setting each day!

Less Mobile Phone Screen Time:

When I first decided I wanted to reduce my mobile phone screen time, I realized I didn’t actually have any idea how often I used my iPhone or what I was spending the most time looking at. To decipher this mystery, I use different apps to help curb my visiting certain sites online during peak work hours. Apps that track usage and number of minutes I spend on social media. Which has helped me to evaluate and corrective approach my social media procrastinations are online.

Then, before getting on my phone to browse, I ask myself if my work-relation media goals are met and what time it is, before engaging in mindless screentime at home. I also set times on my phone for free time online. This allows me to stay within healthy parameters online when it comes to screen time throughout my day.

With that said, those are five ways I’m helping to have better screen time at home this season. Tips that may help you curb and curate better screen time for yourself at home too! Now I want to ask, how do you reduce screen time? Are there any apps you recommend? I’d love to hear about your tips and techniques below!

May & June No-Spend Year Updates

May & June No-Spend Year Updates

May and June are now in the books. Which means we are now officially halfway through my 2018 No-Spend Challenge Year. It’s hard for me to believe that half of this year’s challenge is finished.

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t believe it in a good way. Because let’s face it, not spending can be as tough as overspending! With that said, let’s dig into my last sixty days of this challenge.

May:

Costs and expenses:

  • During the month of May, there were several large-ticket purchases that had to be made for the month. From certification fees for my husband to several small car repairs, our family accrued nearly $700.00 in costs.
  • We also needed to fix three small outdoor home repairs which cost approximately $200.00. While we used savings to pay these expenses, these funds are on the books to be refunded this season.
  • And in terms of groceries, I spent a total of $212.14 on groceries and zero-waste toiletries.

How I saved:

  • $76.00 on requesting interlibrary loan books.
  • Used earned Amazon gift cards to purchase $100.00 in household goods (Angel Eyes, stainless steel pot, handkerchiefs, shea butter, African black soap, and scrub brush).
  • Groomed pets at home and saved $70.00.
  • Sold unused household items on Facebook local groups and made $125.00.
  • Utilized free Hulu with our family Spring plan and saved $7.99.
  • Donated unused household items (clothing, bathroom racks, and bookshelves) to charity for tax receipts in deductions totaling $175.00 in appraised value.
  • Ate from our pantry and freezer for one week saving $40.00.
  • Cut my husband’s hair at home. Saved $25.00.
  • Sold used books on eBay. Earned $64.35 after seller and PayPal fees and shipping labels.

Total saved: $683.34

Total Spent: $1,112.14

Around the house:

May & June No-Spend Year Updates

While I spend more than double of what I saved, all purchases were needed and necessary. Which I am at peace with spending.

Aside from spending in May, our family was able to get some much-needed gardening time in. Including adding thinned herbs from our backyard flower beds to our front flower beds. Afterall, why not use empty bed space for helpful, healthful perennials, bulbs, and herbs?

I was also able to source several ornamental panes of grass from my backyard to edge my unused front flower bed was also a major victory, in terms of my no-spend budget. As each grass retails for close to $5.00 per grass at our local garden nursery, and having sourced over 30 grass clumps, saved my family $150.00 in landscaping costs.

Funds that can be used to fund Fall ornamental gardening features next season.

May also saw new side hustle opportunities for my family from Fiverr and an upcoming secondary Etsy shop. Which will hopefully reap dividends this Fall!

All-in-all, May was a quiet, expensive little month. A month that helped me family dig deeper and truly reevaluate our finances, our gardening practices, and zero-waste methods at home. For which I am beyond grateful.

June:

Costs and Expenses:

  • During the month of June, there were very few expenses accrued at home. We decided to take on several DIY building projects. We sourced free, heat-treated palette wood but did need to purchase wood screw, glue, and sanding materials which totaled $21.00.
  • We also found a side-of-the-road gem, a 55″ plasma tv. While the tv works flawlessly, it came sans a remote and stand. I purchased both on Amazon for under $30.00.
  • I also needed to purchase several pieces of new workout clothing (my previous shorts and tanks were too large, yay!) which totaled nearly $40.00.
  • And in terms of groceries, I spent a total of $162.14 on groceries and zero-waste toiletries. The remaining $97.86 was used to pay for the above-mentioned expenses.

How I saved:

  • We saved $54.00 on requesting interlibrary loan books.
  • Sold unused small appliances on Facebook local groups and made $50.00.
  • Utilized free Hulu with our family Spring plan and saved $7.99.
  • Donated unused household items to charity and received tax receipts for those deductions totaling $60.00 in appraised value.
  • Ate from our pantry and freezer for one week saving $25.00.
  • Cut my husband’s hair at home. Saved $25.00.
  • Sold used books on eBay. Earned $78.81 after seller and PayPal fees and shipping labels.

Total saved: $300.80

Total Spent: $253.12

June was a busy time at home. With time spent building furniture, filming YouTube videos for my minimalism and plant-based cooking channels, working on my podcast, shuttling my family to summer camp activities, and starting new side hustles at home.

May & June No-Spend Year Updates

I was particularly proud of my husband’s handiwork in constructing our new tv console table for under $3.00! Its beautiful, sturdy, and put me in mind to see if my husband is up for tackling other zero-waste projects at home! It was a busy, practical, low-spend month. And again, like in May, I am grateful for the experiences I was provided!

Speaking of zero-waste home projects, you can check out both the television and the DIY tv console in our how-to on YouTube below!

So, friends, I want to ask, did you participate in our no-spend, or your own frugal April, be sure to leave your comments about what you learned! If you didn’t participate, I’d still love to hear how and where you saved the most this month! Share your stories below!

5 Tips for Keeping Your Cat-Friendly Home in Tip-Top Shape!

TidyCats

Growing up my grandmother believed that having pets in the home wouldn’t enable you to be able to keep your home as clean as possible. As a result, I missed out on the opportunity to grow up aside pets as a child. One of the few things I regret about my childhood growing up.

After all, who doesn’t just love cats? Like most cat owners, one of my missions in life is to make sure that my furry friends are living their happiest, healthiest life at home. Especially my cat, Mr. Darcy, a rescue kitten my husband surprised our family with one afternoon last fall. He’s named after one of my favorite characters in fiction, Mr. Darcy, from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

5 Ways to make your cat happy at home

Since the day my husband brought home our sweet little kitty, Mr. Darcy has become one of our best friends. A cat who lives life to the fullest. Making him the perfect cat!

In addition to having the perfect furry friends at home, I also like to keep my home perfectly clean too! Luckily, as many times over pet owner now I know that it’s not only possible to keep your home clean while being a pet owner, but it’s quite simple too!

Its all about having a pet-friendly cleaning routine at home. A routine I do each morning where I do a scan of my home and quickly clean up any pet messes in my living, dining, and bedroom areas at home. Making sure that the pet hot-spots, the litter box areas, pet beds, food stations, and play areas are tidied up, vacuumed, and are restocked for the day. I then make sure to feed my feline crew and am then off to workout and get myself, husband, and little one ready for the day.

This simply 30-minute morning cleanup allows my home to stay in tip-top shape. In such good shape, that unless you saw our litter boxes or food stations, you might not know pets lived in our home. And that’s such a little span of time and energy compared to the love and happiness my crew brings into my life each day!

Now if you’re looking for tips to help keep your cat-friendly home spic and span this season, here are a few tips to help you get started:

Finding the right cat litter:

TidyCats

As a multi-cat home, we use Purina® New TIDY CATS® Free & Clean™ Unscented Clumping Litter. It helps us keep our litter box stations clean, sanitary, and to help keep litter boxes odors at bay!

Purina® New TIDY CATS® Free & Clean™ Unscented Clumping Litter provides unscented odor control with the Powder of Activated Charcoal. I like the unscented version of this litter because with multiple cats my allergies already have enough to decipher each day. So why complicate things with artificial litter smells too?

It provides powerful odor control is at the top of every cat owners must-haves of litter list which is why this littler is without added fragrances and dyes. Free & Clean offers you the odor-absorbing power of activated charcoal plus TidyLock® Protection to lock away odors.

Purina® New TIDY CATS® Free & Clean™ Unscented Clumping Litter. is also 99.9% dust-free, clumps strongly, and help to keep your litter box station clean-up quick and easy at home. With TidyLock Protection that locks away odors to eliminate those dreaded litter box odors each day. We keep litter boxes in our kitchen and storage rooms so keeping them smelling fresh is a priority for me!

TidyCats

I pick up this litter at Target when I pick up my other pet supplies and food staples each week. I shop at Target at least once a week for the entire family and love their selection of pet food, treats, toys, and of course, litter too. It’s the convenient, affordable way for me to keep my pet family well stocked at home!

Have the correct number of litter boxes at home:

Its a general rule that you should have a litter box for each one of your cats at home, plus one. Which is why we have four litter boxes at home. Making sure each box stays clean and fresh by scooping them twice daily, once in the morning and again at night each day. This helps keep our home cleaner, cats happier, and eliminates not only litter box aggression but litter box odors too!

Set boundaries for your pets:

Since our cats were kittens we have trained them to have safe, healthy boundaries by keeping them off of specific surfaces in our home. Including kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, coffee tables, and our kitchen table. This allows me to help keep the surfaces we need to be as germ-free as possible and helps keep our pets away from heat sources or our food too!

We give out cat areas a deep clean weekly:

Each weekend we live out cat-specific areas, including litter boxes a deep clean. We take them outside, remove all litter, hose out the boxes, sanitize the surfaces, and let them sun bleach until dry. This allows us to keep our cats healthier and while cleaning out the litter we can check for urine crystallization, a condition that would require immediate vet assistance.

We create cat-specific play areas in our home:

A fresh and happy at home should always include areas for your cats to play and enjoy their time in your home. We have several small areas that contain cat trees, toys, and our food stations, but we also have an area in our second spare bedroom that is designated as our pet-play space. In this space, we house two litter boxes, out pet bunny’s hutch, our hamster set-up, and DIY cat ramps and a cat toy area.

TidyCats

As cats are natural climbers, we made sure to include simple boards, beams, and ramps that allow them to climb about the room without interfering with my cleaning routines or with the other furry friends they cohabitate with at home in our playroom.

We used reclaimed, heat-treated palette wood, metal hinges, a table saw, and miter saw to put everything together. The entire project took under an hour.

Under the ramps, we keep the various toys, mats, tunnels, and scratching posts we picked up at Target to make sure our fuzzy friends have lots to play with each day at home!

TidyCats

So if your home is a happy home that loves having one cat or multiple cats, like we do, be sure to head over to your local Target and purchase Tidy Cats® Lightweight Free & Clean for your litter boxes and you’ll immediately see a difference in the freshness in your litter box stations, with no extra added scents. Target is always a great place to stock up on your pet’s needs, plus do a little bit of shopping for yourself too!
