11 Ways to Waste Less

Waste is a massive problem in today’s world. Over time, we’ve turned into something of a disposable society. We buy a bottle of water every time we’re out, and we throw the bottle away. We buy a new top every time we go out somewhere nice. We throw socks away and replace them at the first sign of damage. We throw half a meal away when we decide that we fancy something else, without ever thinking about all of the people out there that don’t have a meal in the first place.

We waste things every day. Sometimes, you waste a little of your own time, and nothing terrible happens. But, most of the time, our waste is hurting our planet. It’s leading to higher levels of pollution, overflowing landfills and its hurting animal life. Our seas are filled with plastic, our environment is filled with harmful gases, and our bins are overflowing with household waste. It’s a terrible thing, and for the most part, it’s entirely avoidable.

We don’t need to waste. But, we’ve got into the habit of doing it. We’ve become wasteful without thought. We just do it. Once you’ve taken that first step to realizing just how wasteful you are, and how it’s affecting the world around you, the process of wasting less doesn’t actually have to be that difficult. Here are 11 ways that you can start wasting less in your everyday life.

Buy Reusable Produce Bags

Zero waste stores are popping up all over. Shopping in these stores, or directly from farms and other suppliers is a great way to limit packaging waste. But, to make it easier, it can be worth investing in some good quality reusable produce bags to help you to get what you need, take it home safely and keep it tidy in your cupboards.

Collect Totes

Plastic shopping bags are terribly wasteful. They don’t last, so it’s hard to reuse them even if you wanted to. Instead, collect a few canvas tote bags in different sizes and keep a few in your bag and car, so you never need to ask for a plastic bag.

Find a Good Water Bottle

Plastic water bottles are another massive waste. Buying drinks out is a waste of plastic, and money and they’re not usually good for you (even the ones that claim they are). Invest in a good water bottle that will last, and start carrying tap water around with you.

Meal Plan

Food waste is prevalent but entirely unnecessary. Start meal planning and writing shopping lists to make sure that you only buy what you need.

Use Your Freezer

If you have got leftovers, even after planning, freeze them. If food is close to its use by date, freeze it. Buy in bulk to save money and freeze what you don’t need. In your fight against waste, your freezer can be a valuable asset.

Learn to Sew

As can a sewing needle and some thread. Being able to fix small holes in clothes and upholstery, and sew on a button can mean that your clothes last a lot longer, and need replacing more often.

Buy Less

Buying less in the first place means that there is less for you to waste. Buy only what you need. Spend a month trying to spend as little money as possible, just buying absolute essentials, to try to get into the right habits.

Eat a Packed Lunch

How much money do you spend each year on lunches? Work it out, and you’ll be horrified. Start taking a packed lunch to work, and you’ll be helping to waste less food, packaging, and money. Use a reusable lunch box, and it’s even less wasteful.

Make and Grow Your Own

Grow your own vegetables and fruit and make meals from scratch and you’ll only ever pick what you need. You’ll also be less likely to waste things that you’ve put effort into creating. You can also make things like gift cards to cut your waste.

Stop Printing

In today’s world, where most things can be saved onto the cloud and accessed on iPads and smartphones, there’s rarely a need to print anything out. If you do need to print something, make sure you do it double-sided to use half the paper.

Use Cloth instead of Paper

We use paper towels to wipe up spills. We also use disposable nappies and wipes. Switch to cloth, and you’ll waste much less. It can seem strange to start with, but you’ll soon get used to washing and reusing. Try going back to an old fashioned cotton hanky while you are at it.

DIY Fall Scented Hand Sanitizer

DIY Fall Scented Hand Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer has been all the rage for the past decade. But in the past few months, there has been a lot of talk about the safety and effectiveness of hand sanitizers. In fact earlier this year the FDA began a three-month investigation to determine the long-term effects of the usage to hand sanitizers and anti-bacterial soaps. Their findings? Hand sanitizer products, unlike anti-bacterial soaps, provide a convenient alternative to hand when washing with plain soap and water is unavailable.

I also have a slight confession to make- I’m not an outright fan of hand sanitizers. Don’t get me wrong, I know hand sanitizers have value. But I am also a firm believer in the idea that humanity needs germs, and killing every last little microbe one is an ever losing battle that lands many of us with weakened immune systems and possibly resistant strains of bacteria taking up residence unnecessarily in our gastrointestinal tracts.

While Americans spend on average $175 million a year on hand sanitizers- despite the national averages of most Americans getting two boughs of the Rhino Virus, or as it’s better to know, the Common Cold, per year. So for me, I’ve always felt that unlike hospitals, our homes, our sanctuaries do not need to be subjected to round after round of alcohol-ish stuff. I mean, there’s a difference between being clean and being sterile, between being practical and being paranoid. The latter is not necessary for everyday use in the home. Physicians offices, yes, my home, no.

I am posting a hand sanitizer if it irks me to no end? For lives on-the-go the best method of getting hands clean is hand sanitizer, and in making your own you can avoid the harsher chemical-laden hand sanitizers, make your own varieties for a tenth of the costs of commercial brands, and customize the scent to your liking.

For anyone familiar with this blog will know, I love simple, clean supply lists. So what am I using? My ingredients: Tea tree oil, lavender oil, clove oil, cinnamon oil, witch hazel, and aloe vera gel. You will also know that I am over the moon for anything fall scented. So this hand sanitizer is a win-win for me!

DIY Fall Scented Hand Sanitizer

Here’s a little breakdown for my ingredient list

Lavender oil: Lavender’s botanical name, Lavandula, which comes from the Latin word lavare, which means “to wash,” and this miracle of nature has been helping to keep wounds clean for a millennium. Recent studies have also shown that lander also helps to wipe out fungus and helps to inhibit the growth of MSSA and MRSA (methicillin-sensitive and resistant Staphylococcus aureus.)

Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is well recognized for its ability to kill several forms of bacteria, viruses, and fungi upon contact, thanks to its main antimicrobial component, Terpinen-4-ol. In vitro testing, in either a test tube or petri dish, which has shown that it can is effective against germs ranging from Staph to E. coli. Tea tree oil is also antifungal, antiviral, immuno-stimulant that helps with healing infectious wounds, insect bites, warts, acne, is anti-fungal, clears dandruff, reduces eczema, psoriasis, inflammatory skin conditions, burns to heal, and reduces itching and inflammation.

Clove oil: Clove oil is famous for being a natural remedy for toothaches, the chemical Eugenol. It also contains natural, unprocessed vasoconstrictive properties that restrict blood vessel tension, which causes blood vessels to narrow and restrict blood flow, aiding in head pain relief within minutes. Clove oil is also, as you may have guessed, anti-microbial in nature.

Cinnamon Oil: Cinnamon oil helps promotes circulation, both internally, and when applied to the skin. As well, this fall favorite helps lower cholesterol levels, regulate blood sugar levels, relieve migraines, helps maintains a healthy immune system, promotes good oral health when applied to the gums, helps alleviate sore muscles and joints when applied topically.

Sweet Orange Oil: Sweet orange oil is helpful for lessening a myriad of health ailments including depression and is anti-inflammatory, an antispasmodic, carminative, and is a natural antiseptic.

Witch hazel: Witch hazel is a natural, mild antiseptic that disrupts the cell membrane of the bacteria, denatures its proteins, ultimately kills it, while not drying out delicate skin.

Aloe vera gel: As most everyone knows, Aloe Vera, a succulent plant, hosts its own special antibacterial and antifungal properties, and also works as a moisturizer, too!

Please note: I am not brand loyal currently to any brand of essential oils. Please use whichever brands of essential oils you are most comfortable utilizing for this blend.

Ingredients

  • 30 drops of Tea Tree Oil
  • 20 drops of Cinnamon Oil
  • 10 drops of Lavender Oil
  • 10 drops of Clove Oil
  • 10 drops of Sweet Orange Oil
  • 16 ounces Organic Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1 tablespoon Organic Witch Hazel
  • Glass Measuring cup
  • Glass storage containers
  • Spoon or honey stick

  • Transfer to your portable container of choice.
  • Let hand sanitizer sit and meld for one hour to let oils fully combine.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Body Scrub

There are so many amazing things about this time of year. But with all that magic comes the onslaught of cold, dry weather. And the dry skin that comes with seasonal drops in temperature that leave your skin feeling tight, rough, and itchy. Fall itchy skin that eventually turns into winter itchy skin.

Aside from feeling uncomfortable and perhaps being less than desirable, aesthetically speaking, when dry skin becomes severe, making a perfect entryway for germs. Germs that can cause infection in your body, not only in and on your skin but elsewhere as well. The ramification of dry skin isn’t simply skin-deep, my friends. For this reason, dry skin is more than a matter of cosmetics; it’s a matter of health and safety.

Besides, who’s got time to deal with germs and infections during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? So today I’m sharing with you one of my favorite fun and frugal ways to beat itchy skin with a DIY exfoliating scrub. But why stop at just making an all-natural scrub when you could make a variation of this season’s true star, pumpkin pie spice latte?

Full of pumpkin pie spice goodness, this organic, all-natural scrub will not only help you gently buff away dry skin but also give your skin a caffeine-rich boost of cellulite-fighting caffeine that will help enrich your skin emollient-rich essential oil goodness!

Pumpkin Pie Spice Body Scrub

What’s even better? Making this scrub is as simple as adding all ingredients in a resealable jar. Mixing well to incorporate to incorporate. Its totally a 5-minute self-care treat for yourself this weekend at home!

To use, apply one tablespoon of scrub to your body twice weekly during the colder months of the year. Making sure to scrub with small, clockwise circular motions and making sure to avoid over scrubbing. When scrubbing your decollete and face, working in small, gentle upward strokes.

After scrubbing, rinse off the scrub with warm water and pat dry. Follow this with your favorite natural, cruelty-free moisturizer. I recommend organic coconut oil.

So that’s it, folks. Super simple, right? Also, consider giving a jar of this scrub to others as a gift for the holiday season. As this jar, dressed with bakers twine, a gift tag, and a fresh sprig of winter greenery, would make an excellent holiday gift for most everyone on your list. and if you need more DIY holiday-inspired ideas, check out my homemade beauty page!

How to make your culinary dreams shine

Being a foodie can be hard work. From recipe development to finding the perfect venue to share your culinary talents, there’s so much involved in making your culinary dreams come true. And with any budgeting idea, a working business strategy must always come into play. Even in the kitchen.

Which is why modern foodies have to consider all aspects of their future careers including employing strategies to help you cater to peoples’ taste buds and expand your entrepreneurial skills too! Which is why I am sharing 5 reasons your culinary dreams deserve to stand out and shine in as part of your business plans moving into the last quarter of this year:

Follow your passion

When it comes to expanding your cooking dreams, the most important thing to retain is your passion. Because when your passion is the center of your focus, you can utilize, extrapolate, and monetize your goals into a workable platform outside the kitchen. Without that passion and drive, you will not be able to find a lasting platform for yourself.

After all, it takes more than a culinary degree to become a household name in the food and hotel management sector. An industry saturated with products personalities and platforms. Which is why when it comes to making a culinary name for yourself, passion must be your go-to dish.

Become a better problem solver

Today, with the hospitality industry seeing consistent upward mobility, the potential to cater to the vast majority naturally exists. You will best utilize your culinary skills by solving the greater problems of knowing your ideal audience, establishing a working niche, finding working marketing strategies, sourcing vendors, and being able to find workable solutions to changing market trends.

The trick is to create a working plan of how to feasibly and fiscally work past the issues that may be holding you back from your culinary dreams this season while never forgetting your biggest issue, how to get paid whilst caring for people through good food.

Be creative

Creativity today in the kitchen is not just restricted to drawing up menu plans and creating a chef’s budget. The best chefs in the world are also artists who take up the task of accessing their food with artistic merits to help propel their businesses and to set themselves apart in the greater marketplace ahead.

Visionaries who make the preparations visually exciting by creating recipes that can be developed through a combination of different agents. Including trendy dietary restrictions (Paleo, Vegan, Whole Foods Plant-Based, Keto, etc.), implementing environmentally friendly sourcing (fair trade, ethically sourced, organic, non-GMO products), and incorporating cultural diversity along with entrepreneurship to make their culinary dreams a reality. Which is why being a culinary scholar and a digital marketer is a way to best showcase your creative spirit in the kitchen this year.

Start Small, Think big

In order to properly showcase your culinary acumen, you need to become a digital marketing expert. With one of the best ways to gain wider recognition in the culinary world is by developing your culinary skills into tangible things.

Whether that be a new line of earthen crocks or a line of digital cookbooks. Products designed to let your unique culinary vantage point shine through, that can be showcased online, through local catering opportunities, or trade fairs. All venues that products will help you to make those larger plans advance. But in order to do this, start by thinking small. Building a loyal following in your community or in a posh shop online. Then, over time, you’ll start to advance your culinary dreams to include you, front and center, back to your kitchen dreams.

Be everywhere online

When it comes to making your culinary dreams shine, sometimes a digital approach is best. As a culinary entrepreneur, you need to expand your view to include other titles and positions too. Perhaps you may not become the world best-known chef but you could gain a substantial following as a food blogger, reviewing food across the various restaurants in your neck of the woods. As those with larger followings online can parlay that success into hyper-local restaurant openings, catering, product launching, and publishing deals throughout their industry and beyond.

Consider Will Bronchick, a Denver-based private chef, caterer, and digital marketer for over two decades. Bronchick uses a proven strategy of blogging, marketing, and digital niche-based success to parlay his local endeavors into the successful blog, William Bronchick Food which celebrates the various facets of his culinary roots and business strategies to impact the food culture of the Denver area. Using a well-planned start-up as an outlet to share his culinary experiences with other professionals and foodies he has met throughout his career.

A strategy you can create at home for yourself. As a blogger, freelance food reviewer, or as a budgeting food-based mogul in the making working on multiple corporate projects at any given point in time. Which is why utilizing offbeat opportunities are necessary today in the culinary industry.

Friends, those are my five tips for How to make your culinary dreams shine through. Now I want to ask, what steps are you taking to expand your culinary vision? Share your thoughts below!

This month there were fewer expenses at home. We decided to take on several DIY building projects. We sourced free, heat-treated palette wood but did need to purchase wood screw, glue, and sanding materials which totaled $21.00.

And in terms of groceries, I spent a total of $162.14 on groceries and zero-waste toiletries. The remaining $97.86 was used to pay for the above-mentioned expenses.

“Shear” Quality! The Essential Cheap Purchases To Improve Your Garden

Whether you are brand new to gardening, or you are a seasoned professional, we all like to find new ways to garden on a budget. While gardening takes up a lot of time, it can also take up a lot of money, this is why the best thing to do is to purchase items that are cheap but do a lot for your general upkeep. So, with that in mind, what can most people benefit from?

Pruning Shears

Let’s start here. Pruning shears are one of the most essential items any amateur gardener should have, and they are held in high regard in the professional gardener’s arsenal. But when you are looking for the best type of pruning shears, get ones with a low friction coating, as this helps the blade to avoid catching, especially when you’re cutting through wood.

A Garden Hoe

Weeds are one of the most annoying parts of any garden, and a good quality garden hoe will help you to hack open new ground, and turn over dirt quickly, so you can get the most amount of work done as far as maintenance is concerned in a short space of time. The best types of garden hoe will have a balanced weight, as well as good quality material at the tool head, meaning that you won’t have to change this year in, year out.

A Composter

If you looking to be environmentally friendly, a composter is a great way to return nutrients to the soil. Making compost can be done in various ways, such as a composter, but you can also make the most of items like liquid fertilizer tanks, especially if you plan on covering a lot of ground with compost and fertilizer. If you are looking to expand your garden, and increase your yield, especially if you plan on growing more fruits and vegetables, a composter, or any variation, will be a worthy ally.

A Soil Tester

It’s best to get one of these at the very outset because if you can’t fathom why nothing is growing, it could very well be because the pH is wrong in your soil. So, by getting a soil tester, or a pH meter, you will find out the best way for your plants, fruits, and vegetables to thrive. All you have to do is plug in your soil tester, and wait for a reading.

A Trimmer

Yes, this is stating the obvious, but so many people opt for cheap and cheerful trimmers, but there are so many good quality trimmers out there that don’t cost the earth but are extremely durable. When you are looking for a good quality trimmer, never go for the cheapest item, but look for the ones that are lightweight, and have an electric starter. You want to make the task as easy as possible, so go for something that’s in the medium-priced range.

A Hose

A hose is one of the most essential pieces of kit that you will need to keep your garden in the best possible condition, as no plant can thrive without being watered regularly. Hoses can come in all shapes and sizes to suit your unique needs, from a basic plastic hose for those on a budget to more specialist expandable garden hose options, so it’s totally up to you what kind of hose you choose to invest in. Just make sure it’s good quality if you want the hose to last, as it needs to be thick enough to stand the constant strain of the running water passing through at high speed.

Baskets & Pots

Accessories such as Mediterranean-style vase planters, wicker hanging baskets, and other similar creative plant pots can upgrade your garden like never before, so purchasing a variety of cheap and cheerful baskets and pots could be the perfect way to spice up your outdoor space. Adding a pop of color in the form of some fresh scented flowers can really bring your garden to life, and you don’t need to spend a fortune to set up a few attractive arrangements.

When picking the essential items for a garden, looking at the reviews is always a good idea, but if you are looking at the cost overall, you won’t always get the best quality items.

Glamorous and Glorious Garden Ideas for a Super Hot Summer

Gathering all of your best friends and close family together for a day in the sun is a summer activity you are always super excited to do. You love to entertain and you enjoy spending time outside, so combining both of them together is the ultimate dream.

But before you even think about sending off the invites you need to get your garden into good shape again. It isn’t in bad condition at all, but it could certainly do with some tender loving care sooner rather than later. Whether you need to care for your spring bulbs or change up the overall landscaping of your garden, you can make a huge difference to your outdoor space in a just a short space of time.

Depending on your budget, you could completely change the look of your backyard using just a handful of simple techniques. From desirable decking to a happy herb garden, use your imagination and allow your creativity to flow. Your garden will soon be glorious and glamorous, ready for your special guests, so start your project today and grab your inspiration right here.

A Sophisticated Splash

One of the most amazing parts of lazing outside in the sunshine is being able to cool off in a perfectly divine pool at the back of your own garden. You can find an array of options from the following website poolhottubs.com.

No matter what kind of budget you are working with you can find a pool or jacuzzi to suit your needs and the style of your garden. Your friends and their kids can come over and bring their swimsuits; a whole day of fun can be had from your new sophisticated investment. Fill it with floats and accessories to brighten it up even more too!

Fabulous Flowers

Blossoming and bright flowers are one of the best ways to give your garden the glamorous makeover it truly deserves. Choose your favorite color and make this the theme of your backyard.

Whether you love sunny yellow daffodils, bright blue bluebells or perfectly purple pansies, your garden is going to look a whole lot brighter if you plant these kinds of flowers.

Fill plant pots and scatter them all over the garden, down the pathways and even at the front of your house. It is best to find seasonal flowers that are guaranteed to flourish during the summer months, then you will be able to make the most of your new beautiful blooms.

Desirable Decking

You see decorative decking plastered all over the home and garden magazines and it is true that wooden decking can totally transform your outdoor space. It can act as a separator between your green grass and the seating area; this is especially useful if you have small children that need to play in a certain area.

It can keep them away from the dangers of glass patio doors and acts as a guide as to where their playing area is. Choose rich, dark, cherry wood or lighter oak designs depending on the furniture you end up selecting.

Fantastic Furniture

Your garden furniture is an absolutely essential element of your entire outdoor space. This is where you can relax, socialize and enjoy dinners with your friends or family. It is recommended that you invest in a variety of garden furniture pieces in order to meet all of your needs.

Firstly, you should buy some smaller, kid-friendly items that would be perfect for a little picnic in the afternoon. Secondly, you want larger, more sophisticated furniture items for your grown-up social gatherings; complete your chairs with colorful cushions to match your flower theme.

Rattan garden furniture is extremely handy for storage purposes, as the cube design means everything fits together perfectly. Don’t forget to buy a waterproof cover too, so that your new furniture is protected in all weather conditions.

If you really want to go all out with your garden furniture you might even consider a comfy swing, sofa or sun loungers. This completely depends on what your lifestyle and personal preferences are.

Pond Perfection

Getting a pond in the garden might not seem like the most obvious way to glamorize it, but it can really have a homely touch to your outdoor space. A clean, small pond tucked away in the corner of your garden will truly look picturesque and quaint when it is coupled together with all the beautiful flowers you have planted. You might then choose to keep fish and other wildlife in your pond if you are a fan of animals and have the time to maintain it all.

Brilliant Barbecue

No garden party is complete without a brilliant built-in barbecue that can feed the hungry mouths who come and visit you. You can quite easily construct a neat and unique barbecue in the corner of your garden, nearby the decking area. You might also consider hiring a professional to help you out with this type of project.

Happy Herbs

A herb garden and vegetable patch are truly one of the most idyllic additions you could add to your garden during this project. You could obtain fresh vegetables and spices from the comfort of your own home every time you cook a meal. It is also a fun summer activity to get your kids involved in.

Teach them how to tend to each herb and show them where their dinner is coming from. This will not only save on your grocery bill but it is also an ideal way to maintain a healthy lifestyle for your family.

Imagine the feeling of welcoming your guests into the garden and watching their faces light up with delight. Your newly transformed haven will soon be the go-to place for socializing and relaxing.

Whether you want to invite your kid’s friends over for a playdate or get your best girlfriends together for a Cosmo and a chat, you have the whole package ready to go whatever the occasion may be. You could be lounging on a flamingo float in your new perfect pool or cooking up a scrumptious storm on your new barbecue. Enjoy the process of your garden makeover; the results are going to be incredible!
