Mid-Season Linen Change Tutorial

Tutorial Tuesday

Hello again, savvy savers! For this weeks Tuesday Tutorials, I want to share with you a mid-season change to my bedroom linens in my master bedroom. As longtime readers will know, I’m a sucker for fluffy linens and towels, and as a general rule of thumb always change linens seasonally. This past weekend, for a change of pace (and due to the fact that Mississippi and most of the deep south actually has a true Indian Summer), I opeted to change my linens.

So before showing my newly pull out set, I wanted to share a few rules for changing linens seasonally:

1. Higher thread count doesn’t always mean higher quality: It goes without saying that one should purchase the best linens one can afford. While this may sound like a bank-busting practice, think again! Did you know that any thread counts exceeding 500 are actually two textiles that are woven together, and so linens in the 350-450 category, priced between $20.00-$30.00 after coupon at stores like Bed Bath & Beyond will due. You will save money, and chances are will sleep on sheets without synthetic finishes; chemicals used to treat all thread counts above 500 count.

2. Some materials are cooler than others: Synthetics have a tendency to trap heat, making for a more uncomfortable sleep experience; quality cotton keeps you cooler, and can even keep you warmer in winter. Egyptian cotton also helps to remove all impurities, mites, and dust too. Also worth noting, for menopausal women prone to hot flashes and night-sweats, cotton should be your go-to for most linens, including blankets and layers, for they help to provide moisture-wicking coolness at night.

3. Wash new sheets before you use them. Make sure that you wash your sheets at least two times before putting them on your bed, to remove any irritants on sheets.

4. For sleepers with sensitive skin: Always wash linens in a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup borax powder.

5. Wash linens weekly: Toss bedding in the laundry basket every seven to 10 days. Quilts can be steamed in the dryer weekly as well.

So onto my reveal. I firmly believe, seasonal bedding makes all the difference in the way your bedroom feels. I seasonally change out my linens for several reasons, including that a change of pace and color scheme is always pleasant, but my primary reason in doing so is to help cut down my cooling costs in the warmer weather months. As I live in Mississippi, and the seasons are anything but normal and average, we have warmer spells lasting until nearly Thanksgiving many years, and so thinner, layered sheets and linens help keep my husband and I cooler in the summer evenings, but also help break the chill of central air and ceiling fans as well.

Tutorial Tuesday (1)33

In warmer months I use:

  • Layer one: lightweight jersey sheets; I rotate between aqua, coral, and cream.
  • Layer two: A lightweight knit blanket; I seasonally use a blanket in a box weave pattern in aqua.
  • Layer three: A thinner, patterned quilt, folded in half along the bottom half of the bed; this layer is removed at night.
  • Layer four: A lightweight throw; I again us an aqua throw, which is removed at night.

In cooler months I add additional pillows. As with my other seasons I use two Euro Inserts and cream colored cases for summer, and then two sets of queen-sized standard pillow inserts, one set of these pillows being cooling gel pillows from Sam’s Club, both with two sets of funky pillow shams; I like to mix and match patterns for the standard pillowcases, for a more shabby chic look. I then add several throw pillows, and in this case a set of coral-inspired pillows, in the front; please note, I always buy throw pillows within a month of a season ending, and generally pay 80-90% off at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I also purchase other bedding items out of season as well.

This set will stay on my bed until the end of September, in which case I will switch to a Halloween set, and then an Autumn ensemble, and then a winter/holiday set which will stay on until Spring. I find that cooler layer help my husband and I sleep better, help out body temperature stay better regulated, and all without having to sacrifice style in doing so!

Tutorial Tuesday: DIY Gift Closet Ideas!

LIPSTICK & BLUSH

Good morning, savvy savers! If you are anything life myself, you are always coming up with new ideas on how to pinch your pennies, and save your cents!

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need a quick gift, but don’t have the time or maybe even the money to run to the store? Maybe it is a quick birthday gift you need, or a housewarming or hostess gift. There is a solution to this common dilemma- create a simple gift closet! A gift closet is just what it sounds like, a closet full of thoughtful yet inexpensive gifts ready for when you need them. Not sure where to begin? Be sure to check out my suggestions below on how to create a gift closet of your very own.

1. Find the perfect spot.
You will want to find the perfect spot for your gift closet. Somewhere out of the way of spying little eyes, little hands, and little paws!  Reasonably, you won’t necessarily need a whole closet, merely a shelf or two, a small section of a guest room closet is ideal. Also, consider under-the-bed storage storage totes, too. Just remember, space must be dry, clean, and away!

2. Get organized.
You want to keep your gift closet organized. I recommend using dollar store bins on shelves, labeled and sorted, according to what is inside. You can divide up items by age, gender, recipient, or holiday.

3. Get shopping.
Filling up your gift closet is a cinch. Keep your eyes peeled for bargain or clearance items on your regular shopping trips, monthly shopping deals, and seasonal clearance items; after each holiday I always score awesome deals at chain shops, for goods 80-90% off! Remember…like with all other areas of your home, set a budget for post-seasonal sales and drives to stock-up your closet with the best deals for a song!

4. Consider coupons.
Use coupons to score product for free. Many bath products and beauty products can be scored for free or nearly free after coupon. Also, consider using coupons obtained online from manufacturer sites for items such as kids toys, craft stores, or chains like Bath and Body Works.

 5. Get gifting.
The next time you need a last minute gift, just head to your gift closet instead of the store. Keep plenty of dollar store gift bags, and tissue on hand for quick wrapping. You could also use free forms of paper such as comics, newspaper, and butcher block paper, too! Always shop from your closet first!

A gift closet is the perfect solution when you need an inexpensive gift on the go. Give these tips a try and see how easy it is to make your own for this seasons summer parties, bridal showers, baby showers, and wedding gifts, too!

Back-To-School DIY Pencil Pouches, In-Binder Supply Pouches, & Student ID Cases!

DIY Pencil Pouches

Hello again, savvy savers! Today finds us with another awesome DIY project just in time for back-to-school savings! If you were anything like me as a child, you always needed a pencil pouch, supply case, and student ID bag; all needed to make sure that our schedules, Lisa Frank pencils, push-through lead insert-able pencils, scented Mr. Sketch markers, and the illicit ultra-cool, but highly impracticable pencil top erasers handy!

So for this weeks Tutorial Tuesday’s post, I will be showing you how to make DIY Pencil Pouches, In-Binder Supply Pouches, and Student ID Cases; also note that for the Student ID cases, you could also use these pouches for Epi-pen pouches, a pouch with business cards letting teachers and school personal know about food allergies, or feminine case products for young women!

Also worth noting, be sure to check the Scotch website for everyday coupons on duct tape, colored tape, and the like; I purchased my rolls of Duct Tape, the day after Christmas for the past two years, at CVS with coupons, for only $0.10 per roll! I also purchase my baggies, with coupon at the Dollar Tree, making this project $0.15 per bag, on average!

So, to begin you will need the following:

  • Scissors or Cutting Board
  • Ziplock bags; quart size for Pencil Pouches and Student ID & Gallon Bag for In-Binder School Supply Pouch
  • 3-Ring Hole Punch
  • Customized Duct Tape
  • Straight Edge
  • Card-stock or Scrapbook Paper Sheet
  • Sharpie or Colored Marker
  • Binder (or D Clip, if linking to a backpack)
  • Page Re-Enforcers, Optional

PicMonkey Collage

Step 1: Here’s how to make the DIY Pencil Pouches:

  1. Lay a Ziplock baggie on a clean surface, as flat as possible.
  2. using a straight edge and sharpie, mark two inches off of the bottom of the baggie.
  3. Cut the two inch section off of the baggie and set to the side.
  4. Lay your tape flat on the baggie, and continue to wrap each strip of the baggie; each baggie will use three strips.
  5. Secure the bottom strip together.
  6. If you just want a pencil pouch, you are now done!

Step 2: Here’s how to Turn Pencil Pouches into Student ID Cases:

PicMonkey Collage

  1. Using the piece of cut-off baggie listed above, lay the piece flat and cut it in half.
  2. Using a sheet of card-stock or scrapbook paper, cut a template to fit the baggie half sheet; I used a 3″x3″ sheet.
  3. The cut-out will act as a backing to whatever you will need to place in the pouch, for your Student Id, words of encouragement card, epi-pen instructions, etc.
  4. Place the card in the sleeve and place the sleeve on top of the pouch.
  5. Tape down both sides and the bottom section of the sleeve, leaving the top sleeve of the envelope open for the pouch.
  6. Also note, you can hole punch your pouch, and then add a D-Clip to the pouch, if adding it to a backpack!

Step 3: Finally here’s how to make the In-Binder Supply Pouch:

PicMonkey Collage

  1. Using the instructions for the Pencil Pouch and the Student ID instructions above, make a pouch using a gallon-sized baggie.
  2. When adding a sheet envelope to the top of the pouch, aim for a 4″x4″ rectangle to the pouch; this envelope can house your student schedule or emergency contact information.
  3. When your pouch is completed, using a three-ring hole punch, punch your pouch to accommodate its use in a three-ring binder.
  4. You’re done!

How To Become A Book Reviewer

HappyMother's Day (2)

Hello again, savvy savers! If  a mug of soup, a cup of hot tea, and a great, new book sounds like your perfect night, than that makes two of us! If you are anything like me, than you are nothing short of a bibliophile! Well, you are in luck, as this weeks Tutorial Tuesday post centers around being able to score free books.

How can be score free books?

  • You can become a book reviewer, with one of several dozen online book reviewer programs.
  • The best part is that you do not need to be a designated book blogger, to be able to review books.
  • You simply need to have a love of the written word, a social media following, and a verifiable mailing address.
  • Each blogger will need to apply for book reviews, and just wait for the reviews to come in.
  • Keep in mind, you will need to keep reviews legal, by always disclosing your reviewer status.
  • Beyond this, you will need to review books online, as well as reviewing on an online purchasing outlet, such as Goodreads, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.

Here are a list of Reviewer Programs:

  1. BookSneeze:  They have both print and e-books available. Booksneeze sends out a monthly newsletter informing participants of the latest books available for review.

  2. Blogging for Books: This program is ran by Waterbrook Multnomah. It has a pretty simple sign-up and I like that they send out email notices monthly informing you of the different books they have available.

 3. Bethany House: Here is a link to the latest newsletter with the list of books available for review.

  1. Tywebbin: Offers a quick simple sign-up to be host of one their virtual book tours. Books offered from this review program tend to be primarily African American books.

  2. Cross Focused Reviews: This program is a service of Cross Focused Media, LLC. Once you have signed up on their list, you will receive email notifications of available books on tour.

  3. TLC Book Tours:  Offers a quick sign up process to get on their list of tour hosts.

  4. Tyndale Blog Network:This program is hosted by Tyndale House publishers. Each month they send out a list of available books once you have been approved.

  5. NetGalley: This program offers books from a vast number of publishers. According to their website, “NetGalley is a service to promote and publicize forthcoming titles to readers of influence.

  6. The B& B Media: I have done several reviews through this program. Once you’re on their distribution list, you receive an email notification of available books they have and you simply fill out the form to be a part of that book’s tour. They give you a date the review must be posted by.

This list provides a great start for book lovers and bloggers alike, that are looking to review books. Each program offers free books in exchange for an honest review and have their own requirements about review length and where you must publish your reviews.  So, today I challenge you look into saving on your monthly book purchasing costs, by becoming a book reviewer!

DIY Modern Art!

ADVENTURE CLUB (1)Good evening, savvy savers! As it is Tuesday, its time for another Tutorial Tuesday, and this week I am sharing with you one of my in-home art projects! A few months ago, when I started redecorating my master bedroom, needed a series of canvases for a small built-in wall nook and so my $3.00 Modern Wall Art was born! I created this look by placing three $1.00 canvases, purchased from Joann’s with a coupon, in a 11×14 size, placing them side-by-side, placing both horizontal and vertical strips of masking tape firmly across the canvases, and then painting the canvases in a coordinating hue, which in my case was a Sherwin Williams paint sample, in caramel spice.

Once the canvases dried, I carefully removed the tape, used a white fabric pen to correct any flaws, and then hung the canvases by Velcros strips one and a half inches apart. The effect if rather neat, and in my opinion, offsets the cream-on-white colors pattern for my built-in shelving unit. I like that the look can be changed, and that the canvases are modern enough to please my husband, but neutral enough to match my more eclectic sensibilities!

Sure, this may seem simplistic for someone with one of her two degrees in Art History, but I like it just the same!

Here’s to art, for art’s sake!
