Edible Easter Baskets! #SCBH2015

IMG_32051

Good morning, savvy savers! Spring has sprung, as have the myriad of Easter-themed projects around the net, and The Lady Prefers To Save is no exception! Today, I wanted to share my Edible Easter Basket Project as part of the #SCBH2015 !

For this project you will need:

  • 4 Theater Boxes of Candy
  • 1 8″ Square of Cardboard
  • 1 Pack of Tubed Easter Candy, for Handles
  • Recycled Paper Shreds or Edible Paper Shreds

To make this project:

  1. For this project I simple hot glued four theater candy boxes together.
  2. Next, hot glue a small square of cardboard beneath the basket for stability.
  3. I then used tubed Easter candy for handles.
  4. The basket is filled with Dollar Tree goodies, and filled with recycled paper shreds!

And that’s it, voila! I was able to make this basket for $4.00! This basket would make a great addition for young children, neighbors, friends, family, teacher, and co-workers! The customization options for this basket is endless.

Here’s to crafting!

Gift Closet Ideas: Dollar Tree Party Glasses!

IMG_47351

Hello again, savvy savers! For this weeks Gift Closet Ideas, I wanted to share with you an idea for a fun, cute hostess gift, graduation gift, or a moving into your first apartment gift, Dollar Tree Stuffed Glasses!

  • My thought is, taking these fun, festive, themed glasses from the Dollar Tree, which I saw in birthday, animal print, girls night out, baby shower, and Spring themed prints.
  • Fill them with samples from the mail, candy, miniature bottles of sparkling cider.
  • Also from the Dollar Tree, and the like would make an awesome single gift, or a six or perhaps eight pack boxed, or carefully basket-filled gift!
  • How awesome would this be as a thinking of you gift, as a secret gift for a friend or co-worker, or as a small happy left in a mailbox for a neighbor?

This is such a fun, cheap gift that would surely put a smile on anyones face! These glasses can be purchased, stored, and used as inexpensive gift vessels. What better addition to a couponers gift closet or when a quick gifting idea for your household, new neighbors, when your household is being moved, including the professional services of Montreal Movers. What a budget-friendly, gifting idea?

Friends, how are you gifting this season at home? Leave your thoughts below.

Here’s to giving!

Free Last Minute Holiday Decorating Ideas!

images (1)

Hello again, savvy savers! With the Holiday season right around the corner, it’s time to discuss ways to save for the upcoming holiday decorating season! You may be thinking, Winter already? Yes, already! With only 8 weeks until Christmas, now is the time to start saving things around the home for the decorations you will want to make this coming holiday season. I suggest this list, as I will be starting a craft-a-day project series for the month of December, and for those who collect these items now, you will be able to follow along with my series as well. What’s going to be the best part of this series? I am trying to create projects that are free, upcycled, or can be purchased at the Dollar Tree.

So, here are a few suggestions for free, last minute holiday decorations:

  • Glass bottles; various shapes and sizes.
  • Empty, clean milk jugs.
  • Pine cones.
  • Plastic grocery store bags.
  • Small, broken sticks from yard; 1-2 feet in length.
  • Scrap black paper.
  • Glass and Plastic Lidded Jars, cleaned and dried.
  • Small paper lunch  sacks.
  • Wine bottles; empty, clean, and dried out.
  • Save wax melts, stored back in original cartons in red, orange, green, black, or brown shades.
  • Large and small metal cans; cleaned, dried, and with their labels soaked and removed.
  • Truvia boxes,

I hope this list gets you inspired for this Winter season!

Here’s to saving,

Happy Thanksgiving!

Keep Calm and GOBBLE On copy

So, can you all believe that Thanksgiving is tomorrow? Geez, this month has flown by, for me anyway! This will be my last post until until this weekend, although I have several deals posts waiting in the wings, which will be posted for you all! This year I am so thankful for all of the blessings this blog has brought into my life. From meeting amazing fellow bloggers, to being able to review subscription services and products, as well as being able to post about awesome, affordable ways to save money for families, like my own, I want to let each and every reader know, how amazing you all are!
I am so utterly thankful for you! This year will be a relatively quiet, at-home Thanksgiving for my husband and I, full of new found ways to smoke, bake, and grill turkey, as well taking time this year to appreciate the small things in our lives we hold so dear, one another. I will also be taking time to speak to my Grandmother, who turned the big 7-0 yesterday, and is still as feisty, able-bodied, and as jolly as she can be for this season of her life!

I will also be taking a break this year from Black Friday shopping, focusing more on Cyber Monday deals this year, to both celebrate more time at home, as well as in solidarity for those workers who increasingly, work a retail environment, on Thanksgiving, without overtime, complimentary meals, or the life. I will be keeping those workers, and their families, in my thoughts this year. While I know that many industries, including .com corporations, cellular providers, telecommunication companies, and public works employees will be working Thanksgiving, their working conditions are not nearly as hostile, forced, or as demoralizing in nature as the previously mentioned.
This time of year, I often think of the workers, in the retail industry who help to provide my family the deals, promotions, and savings we depend on daily. For those who will be schlepping out this Black Friday, please be safe, prepared, even-tempered, and thankful for the savings at your disposal! Please take a moment and wish your cashiers, store assistants, and managers a wonderful holidays season. For those eating out, tip well, including delivery drivers. Be kinder to postal and carrier drivers. And to anyone who has helped you this year, bless their lives with the pleasure of hearing seasons greetings, in a positive capacity from the public at large, like you!

Beyond all of this, I will be taking some time to enjoy my own quiet personal health victories, by stepping out onto my back patio, and watching my Japanese Maple sway in the breeze, which can be seen below!

fall_savings_banner

Hello again, spooktacular savers! This is day two of my three month fall savings series here on The Lady Prefers2Save! I am truly excited to be starting a new blog series, and hope that you all will follow along! Each day I will feature money-saving suggestions, tips, recipes, projects, or yard decorating ideas with budget-savvy families in mind! Today’s post centers a combination post, for both my Fall Savings Series and my Thrifty Thursday’s Savings series, which is a very affordable way to create a Halloween look for your bedroom on a budget!

To create this look, I simply combined a black bed skirt, black and white monochromatic damask quilt, an orange layered blanket underneath, with a fall, black cat blanket topping the bed. For pillows, I layered two black euro shams, burnt orange pillow cases, damask shams, black cat pillows, and a homemade pillow, which pays homage to our favorite pet, Mr. Shadow Cat!

I believe that by simply changing the look of my bedding seasonally, I can inexpensively change the overall look of my bedroom. Besides, who doesn’t like a little whimsy, on a dime!

Here’s to Fall,

As you may know I am a fur-parent to several adorable, precocious pups and kittens (they are all fully grown cats and dogs, but will always be kittens and puppies to me) and so I try to not leave them out of my fun each holiday season! Each year, I chose one of my fur-babies to try and either dress them up in a Halloween costume or the like, and use the photo as a Halloween screen saver. This year, my husband’s cat, Shadow Lee, gave us his best face, and for that matter, best eyes. His random shot, sitting on the edge of kitchen counters proved to be a spooktacular photo of his beautiful glowing green eyes, which in addition to my annual screen saver, will also grace our family Halloween greeting card for friends and family alike.

Taking photos of pets, like Mr. Shadow Lee, is a great way to add a little whimsy, on a dime, to your Halloween celebrations! You’re just a right click away from a free, customized pet screen savers of your own. See what interesting photos your own pets can conjure up this Halloween season!

Here’s to Fall,

Countdown to Christmas: Recyclable Gift Cards!

ChristmasTree

Hello again, savvy savers! I know many people may think this title of this post seems off, but its not! I will let you in on a secret… the day to start shopping for your next years Christmas list, is the day after Christmas! That’s how I do so anyway. I shop early, spend less, and generally have my holiday shopping, including most food items, purchased by Thanksgiving! As I previously mentioned, I never spend more than $300.00 for our holidays and we generally have huge holiday celebrations, as you can see above! With this thought in mind, I am starting a new weekly series on Christmas shopping! Each week I will discuss an idea on how to prepare for the holidays on a budget, so when the big day actually arrives you will be ready to go, with a few hundred spent, instead of a few thousand!

Hello again, savvy savers! For this weeks Countdown to Christmas, I wanted to mention the idea of putting back actual and digital gift cards in your gift closet at home. One amazing way to do this, for free no less, is through Recyclebank.com! Recyclebank is an online website, which discussed greener living, environmental, and healthier community topics by way of games, reading articles, and signing green living petitions. In exchange for each activity, you can earn points which can be redeemed in their online gift store; each activity ranges from 10-100 points each so obtaining points and gift cards is simple, quick, and easy to do! What’s nice about this redemption store is that they often carry Amazon.com gift cards, which can be used for actual gifts, or stored away for later birthday, holiday, wedding, going to college, or holiday gifts, as Amazon.com gift card codes never expire!

What’s better is that you can also earn gift cards to Foot Locker, Star Bucks, Walmart, CVS, and other retailers as well!  This is an awesome way to start putting back free gift cards for your home Gift Closets! If you are unfamiliar with Recyclebank,  or wish to sign-up for this free site, click here!

Enjoy!
