Battle Of The Bulge, Budget-Style: Monthly Seamstress Tape Measurements!

eating_budget

  • Hello again, savvy savers! Today I am starting another new blog series, Battle Of The Bulge, Budget-Style! I will be focusing on ways to live a healthier, more active lifestyle while be able to afford clean, organic, obtainable foods! I believe this series can be worthwhile for many, who like myself, wish to get more in shape, not through crash-dieting but by small attainable lifestyle changes!  All of the changes I propose will be free or affordable, and most meals and plans will contain couponed savings or deals! Fads are fancy, but coupons are a commitment! With that said, here is where I am currently: I have a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. I am looking to lose 60 lbs., find affordable non-gym membership options for working out, and change the way I consume food; this includes meals, snacks, and splurges!

Today I am 31 years young, I am 5’6”, and weigh 199 lbs; I am down two pounds since last week. I walk my dogs but beyond this am not terribly active. My lifestyle causes sedentary behaviors; I work-from-home, blog, run two internet businesses, and perform advocacy work online as well. I am an internet-based excuser! Today finds my continued yoga, meditation, walking my dogs, using a pedometer, portioning my meals, and now I also measure myself monthly!

For my 10th post, I wanted to discuss a new lifestyle strategy I have implemented, monthly measurement logs. Using a seamstress tape, I measure my neck, arms, bust, waist, hips, thighs, and calves, then log my progress each month, good or bad, to see a visible result of my diet strategy. I have found this method daunting at first, but now, in my weight lose, find that seeing my actual results, is amazing and euphoric!

More reasons to measure yourself monthly, as part of a healthy lifestyle plan are:

  • There are the best ways to track yourself OTHER than a scale! I generally do not weigh myself. I find that in the process of both losing weight and toning up, there will be periods where you will not show progress on a scale, but you will have instant results when using seamstress tape!
  • A photo is worth a thousand words.  Stand in front of a mirror in a bathing suit or your underwear with your cell phone camera and take a picture.  Then turn to the side and take another picture of your profile view.  Store your photos in an album on your computer, and over time, using a slideshow, you will see results more effectively and concretely than by way of a scale; between each segment of photos show a photo of your seamstress tape measurements for effective record keeping.
  • Take stock in your measurements.  Your seamstress tape will help you pinpoint areas of weight lose success. Be sure to measure the following areas:

-Neck: this will help you see immediate water lose weight.
-Shoulders: this will help you see toning results further into your weight lose.
-Chest: this will help you see toning results further into your weight lose; for women bust reduction is also a great indicator of carb ad fat reduction as well.
-Biceps: this will help you see toning results further into your weight lose.
-Waist: this will help you see immediate results, by way of clothe sizing.
-Hips: this will help you see toning results further into your weight lose.
-Thighs: this will help you see toning results further into your weight lose.

You will be surprised at how an inch lose in any of these areas will alter the way your clothes will fit, your attitude will change, and you health will better!

I highly recommend pushing your boundaries to the side, and see how you measure up to your own personal, obtainable healthy lifestyle goals!

For my 8th post, I wanted to discuss a new measure I have implemented to help in my healthier lifestyle choice, gardening! Did you know that according to the American Heart Association, gardening 1 hour daily will burn up to 400 calories, and considering that the average weekend project tales 4-6 hours, and that maintaining your yard weekly, in warmer weather, will take nearly 1 hour a day, you would, on average burn upwards of 2,400 calories a week! An entire days worth of calories! This is a staggering number! For me, I make sure to water the plants, lawn, and mow as often as I can, as its no longer a chore for me, but an exercise! I love that performing tasks for  hobby can lead to better health!

How awesome is that? For a small, simpler routine,  here is my suggested, and used, gardening workout routine:

  • Pull weeds in 1 flower bed for 10 minutes
  • Rake mulch back into place in all beds, as needed, for 10 minutes
  • Fertilize roses, bushes, and low-lying shrubs for 10 minutes
  • Manually edge 30 feet of driveway, sidewalk, or straight-edged areas, 20 minutes
  • Water front flowers beds, 10 minutes

So, by my routine, all of which I can accomplish before 8 am, or after 6 pm, and will burn 400 calories! No gym membership or lawn service needed! This is an awesome way to put on a few podcasts, listen to a cd, or just have some time to yourself, and your yard, for nothing more than time! I also keep my Shih-Tzu, Sassy with me while gardening to lose weight; I have metal screw-into-the-yard hooks in various places in my yard, which I leash and harness Sassy to, and move her from area to area; so I can bond with my fuzzy-love, lose weight, and clean my yard at the same time!  This is one of my favorite ways to burn extra calories, while creating a more serene home for my family and myself!

Also, if you are looking for other ways to save money, lose weight, and maintain your yard, beds, and landscaping, be sure to check out my frugal garden tips, here!

  • The next item in the box was an herbal sleep aid by bioterra herbs; these pills have worked well, without any side-effects, and had a retail value of $7.00.

Mia Tempo April Box

Let me begin by saving that this box was amazing! I had so much fun opening and trying out this box. This service, compared to many other I have tried comes with all full-sized items, from companies you love and trust, such as Ecotools and Tea Forte!

The presentation: This subscription box was well packaged, could easily be given as a gift, and its presentation is spot on, in terms of modeling itself after the take-home post-treatment session kits given to clients at the various spas I have been to over the years.

The boxing: the package opened easily, and included an at-home spa chart and self-treatment guide; the perfect antidote for a stressful work week!

The contents: Lemongrass Body sugar scrub and lotions, lemon mist face spritz, a box of tea forte, to drink after a great bath, and a 2 sided ecotools puff-ball and scrubber.

The cost: This is a quarterly box for $50 dollars, and the products retailed for close to the cost of the subscription.

Verdict: I loved the box, and would definately recommend it to others! Be sure to check out Mia Tempo to see what other awesome subscription box offers they make for you!

Weekly Reflections: Highs And Lows From This Week & Weekly Goals For The Week Ahead, 7/20-7/26!

Hello again, savvy savers! I wanted to end my weekly posts by bring the week to a close with a post about the reflections on this past week.

The highs for the week:

  • Losing two pounds.
  • Trying to expand my family!
  • The ongoing repurposing of two rooms in my home, and the beginning of my chalk painting adventures.
  • Continuing a daily devotional.
  • Saving $78.00 on my groceries; this allowed me to only spend $34.56 on groceries this week!
  • Using homeopathic pest remedies on my pets, helping them to stay healthy!
  • Falling back in love with Netflix!
  • Receiving words of encouragement online, from my Aunt Michelle!
  • Being a co-host for the Merry Monday Linky Party!
  • My husband being able to spend time with his niece, nephews, and brother-in-law; those kids are one of the joys of his life.

My lows for the week:

  • Several of my summer plants dying.
  • The outdoors being so humid its hard for mopped floors to dry.
  • My home never seems clean enough.
  • Debating on whether or not to reconnect with my birth mother.
  • Displacing my unhappiness over my own personal stress onto my husband, when he leaves messes, and though I apologize, I feel horrible afterwards.

My quote for the week:

In honor of what would have been his 96th birthday this week, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” -Nelson Mandela

My inspiration for the week:

Being able to cut my home phone and cable, and while I am still finalizing he details of adding other forms of services, I have found that I can now watch more shows, and save $160.00 a month doing so!

My humor for the week:

IMG_0412

My Great Pyrenees puppy (which is funny to say unto itself, as when she stands upright we are eye-to-eye with one another), Lady, has now learned to “give paw,” and this morning when I did not see her giving me her paw, she tapped my behind to get my attention! When I turned to see what she needed, she grinned at me, and in an attempt to give me both her paws, tumbled over grinning; sometimes the greatest joys in life come now from our children, but from our fuzziest children! Puppies are the best!

Goals For The Coming Week:

  • Walk 1/2 mile daily.
  • Finish my Motivated Moms Planner Chores daily.
  • Read for 1 hour.
  • Prepare three recipes and a freezer cooking session for the blog one day this week.
  • Finish four upcycled projects to post to the blog.
  • Finish all of my work-related projects ahead of time this week, in the evening, to free up my days more, by7 at least 1 hour.
  • Start writing love letters for my husband, an educator, so when he starts classes back-up next month, he will have one daily with his lunch.
  • get dressed and wear makeup daily, even when not working.
  • Clean out my coupon binder, and start moving to my new method for organizing coupons and blog/videotape my progress for the blog.
  • Sleep eight hours a night.

What are your goals for the week, I’d love to hear them below in a comment!

Happy Sunday!

Hello again, savvy savers! I wanted to end my weekly posts by bring the week to a close with a post about the reflections on this past week.

The highs for the week:

Losing two pounds.
Trying to expand my family!
The ongoing repurposing of two rooms in my home.
Continuing a daily devotional.

My lows for the week:

Preparing for a new life without being a caretaker to a family living with dementia, who has gone to live with relatives; seeing a relative seemingly disappear in plain sight in truly frustrating, and through continued prayer, I hope to make it through this difficult time. As I have been a working in the clerical field, as well as being a caretaker, it will be a transition to become a wife and family, without this role in tact as I have been a caretaker the entirety of my marriage. Though this is a needed transition, change can be difficult, travel expensive, and feelings are still the hardest casualty of all!

My quote for the week:

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That’s his. -Unknown

My inspiration for the week:

Being able to recycle 90% of my weekly trash!

My humor for the week:

Catching myself singing out loud, being caught doing so, and not even caring!

Goals For The Coming Week:

Lose 1 pound, organize my insurance records, organize my will, walk the dogs 1/2 mile a day, have all blog assignments done on time, finish four product and boxed subscription reviews, oil paint for a few hours, take one hour for myself each night, and sleep 7 hours nightly!

Happy Sunday!

For my fourth post, I wanted to discuss a new measure I have implemented to help in my food portion control, measuring cups. This may sound very rudimentary, but I have found this very effective. I use a 1 and 2 cup pyrex measuring glass to measure out the portions of food I eat each meal at home. I purchased my cups, for free, on Amazon.com using survey-derived gift cards, but similar versions are available at the Dollar Tree.

Here is a guide I use in doing so:

1) Foods that should be served in 1 cup servings: Raw vegetables, cooked or raw fruit,

2)  Food that should be served in 1/4 cup servings: Cooked vegetables, Dried Fruit, Waffles,

3) Foods that should be eaten in 1/2 cup servings: Whole Fruit, Canned Chicken or Tuna, Prepared Salads, Meats, Poultry, Eggs.

4) Foods that should be eaten in 2/3 cup servings: Fruit Juice, Yogurt, Milk, Potatoes, Cereal,

5) Foods that should be eaten in 1/8 cup servings: Cheese, Bread, Pretzels, Potato Chips,

6) Foods that should be eaten in 1/3 cup servings: Rice, Couscous, Quinoa, Cooked Pasta,

7) Foods that should be eaten in 1 teaspoon servings: Oil, Butter, and Spreads.

8) Foods that should be eaten in 1 tablespoon servings: Nuts.

Here’s to the Journey!
