7 Must-Do Chores This Winter At Home

While the majority of cleaning gurus will lay claim to the idea that when it comes to cleaning, spring is the time when the vast majority of your household chores should be completed. The truth is wintertime, with all its environmental muck, the mud and dirt brought in from the outside, the soot of the fireplace, and less-than-ideal indoor air. All of which makes cleaning in winter just as important as any other season.

So with this in mind, here are 7 cleaning chores you should be doing this winter to keep your home in its healthiest and cleanest shape:

brown wooden surface

Protect your floors:

To keep as much dirt and mud outside of your house as possible, place mats at all entry points. This will encourage people to rub the mud off their shoes using your mat, and not your carpets! Placing mats inside the house can also help reduce indoor dampness.

Performing regular vacuuming sessions, twice weekly at a minimum, can help to get rid of dirt on the floor and things being trucked in as well. It’s also a good idea to have a different pair of house shoes or slippers for each member of your household to wear while indoors.

This will help keep your floors from marring and prevent foot oils from transferring to newly cleaned floors. A Tip: Placing a boot tray, filled with river rocks, by each entrance will encourage others to remove their soiled, stained, soaked boots before coming further into your home.

Cleaning your home more often:

During the winter season, people spend most of their time indoors, so it’s best to maintain the cleanliness of the home daily rather than weekly. Maintenance is especially important when you have children and pets at home as they love to play both outdoors and indoors, making it essential that you regularly sanitize countertops, wipe out bathroom sinks, and sweep and mop high-traffic areas with disinfectants such as white vinegar with a few drops of organic citrus essential oils each day.

Carpet cleaning even in winter:

Having your carpet thoroughly cleaned helps protect your health. While everyone wants clean and beautiful carpeting in their home, they also should want a carpet that is not saturated with the chemicals common in ice melt and from rubber boots. Helping to remove this dirt building up, by sprinkling your carpet with baking soda, and vacuuming up the debris, will help to refresh your home and health!

air tight jars

Perform a pantry audit:

Start by removing all the cans and boxes from your pantry and storage shelves, and then vacuum away any lingering dust or crumbs that may have accumulated since spring. Then, inspect each item before putting it back in its place, tossing anything that is expired in compost, and donating anything you will not use within the next two seasons to a local food bank. You may be surprised at all of the soup-building staples you may already have on hand at home.

Test and clean your smoke detectors:

You already know to put fresh batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on the days you change the clocks for Daylight Saving Time, but you also need to clean your units as well. Since dust accumulates on each unit, it can cause them to underperform. Use your vacuum cleaner’s soft brush attachment to clean in and around the detectors’ openings, and if any are more than 10 years old, replace them.

Flip your mattress:

When you turn back your clocks, you should turn your mattress over, too. But I also recommend rotating pillowtop mattresses a full 180 degrees to prevent body impressions from causing certain spots to slump. Also, sprinkle your mattress with baking soda to neutralize odors, and then vacuum it up monthly.

white and black device

Vacuum all upholstered surfaces:

You think your couch is clean until you plop on it, and a haze of dust appears around you. Give sofas and chairs a good vacuuming, making sure to hit both sides of the cushions, the back, sides, arms, and even the platform underneath the cushions.

Don’t forget the exterior of your home after your 7 chores:

While interior upgrades should take priority, it’s also important not to overlook exterior projects. Start by clearing out gutters to protect against water damage and ensure proper drainage. Your foundation should be clear of debris to reduce pest infestation and water damage. Power washing the siding, deck, and patio will remove mildew, grime, or accumulated dirt over the seasons. Additionally, inspect the exterior walls, windows, and doors for cracks that might allow drafts or moisture in. Furthermore, examine your roof to look for missing or damaged shingles that might require repair. Hire a roofer if needed to make necessary repairs. Trim any overgrown bushes or trees near your home that could provide access for pests, as they could provide entry points for them and cause exterior damage. Don’t neglect to give some attention to the exterior during winter cleaning.

So, friends, those are the 7 Must-Do Chores To Do This Winter. Chores that will help to keep your home in tip-top, healthy shape. So now I have to ask, do you have any chores that you perform at home to help keep your home healthiest each winter? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

3 Debt-Free Ways For Adults To Afford To Go Back To School

Please note, this post is sponsored by Diamond Bloggers. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

scholarships

More adults than ever are returning to college to get their bachelor’s or master’s degrees to advance their careers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, an estimated 8.1 million students age 25 and older attend college will enroll in colleges and universities across this nation and matriculate this fall. With that number expected to grow by a whopping 18% percent by 2025.

While completing a degree can help you progress in your career field of choice, it can be quite expensive. With many adult students thinking that their educational pursuits may be out of reach due to their financial circumstances at home. Leavings struggling students heavily reliant on student loans and the racking up of debt.

However, as many adult students are considered demographically as nontraditional attendees, you might be eligible for debt-free financial aid and financing options. With the largest percentage of these options being easy-to-apply for scholarships for adults going back to school. Options that can reduce the cost of attending college and limit how much student loan debt you take on.

If you’re looking to go back to school as an adult student, here are the steps you should take to get started:

Complete the FAFSA

If you’re thinking of going back to school, the first thing you should do is complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The U.S. federal government, colleges, and universities will need to review your FAFSA in order to give you access to federal grants, loans, and work-study programs.

Search for Grants

Grants can be some of your best friends when it comes to financing your way back to school. Various grants are offered by the federal government and individual colleges and universities to nontraditional students. Since these are grants and not loans, they will not need to be repaid. Check with your local social clubs in your area, such as Civitans, your workplace’s HR department, as well as your university and colleges bursar’s department for available grant opportunities. Federal opportunities also exist, including the Federal Pell Grant. A need-based grant for undergraduate students of any age who can demonstrate financial need, with the average recipient receiving $5,920, as of January 2018.

For teaching professionals going back to school, you may also qualify for the federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant. Funds that can be applied to help you receive your Master’s, online and through traditional programs. Keep in mind, some grants will require you to finish your program as a full-time student to avoid grant repayment. And remember to apply early as grant funding may be limited.

Apply for Scholarships

Because college costs a lot more than it used to, the economy stinks, and state support for students has decreased substantially, applying for scholarships is a must for adult students returning to college. Scholarships also have benefits beyond finances including opportunities to network with college and university admissions officers and possible mentorship opportunities as well. This is why applying for scholarships is key to affording to go back to school.

Searching for scholarships can occur by searching for scholarship organizations and foundations as well as by seeking funding from scholarships funded by familiar sources, such as workplace opportunities, but I often find that business professionals often offer the most competitive scholarship opportunities available across the boars.

Currently, there are several awesome scholarships available to help you on your road to debt-recovery including the following:

Be sure to apply to receive a chance to receive the above-mentioned scholarships this season. Keep in mind, most will require a heartfelt 500-word essay. But don’t let this deter you because every little bit helps when it comes to building your debt-free tomorrow!

Friends, those are the 3 steps to help you start the process of financing your journey back-to-school this season. Now I want to ask, will you be going back to school this year and which of these great scholarships will you apply to? Share your thoughts below!

9 Ways to Fight SAD Symptoms This Winter

With the Christmas tree composting and radio stations shelving Bing Crosby music for another year, let’s get real with something: ‘Tis the season for melancholia.

We all know the feeling. You’re more tired these days. More anxious or moody. Cocooning with high-carb fare while you and your fuzzy kid’s binge-watch Netflix, sounds better than hanging out with friends and family. Your appetite for the good company is currently on hideous. It’s harder to get out of bed, and when you do, your mood resembles the landscape you see-cold, dark, abysmal nastiness.

If you feel this way each January you’re not alone.

The issue? Mother Nature’s gloomy new year’s forecast is biologically felt to some degree by an estimated 1:20 people who live in colder climates during the winter. Starting around October and ending in April with spring’s thaw. For most people, it manifests as the winter blahs. The age-old doldrums of wanting the winter to end so badly that our bodies can produce mild but manageable feelings of external sluggishness, worsening of cold, flu, and bronchitis symptoms, and food cravings.

Nearly 20 million Americans have a more severe form of winter depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder, or more aptly known by the acronym SAD. A condition diagnosed only after at least two consecutive years of more intense symptoms.

While a person with winter depression may have difficulty waking up or getting out of bed at times, someone with seasonal affective disorder can’t get to work on time. Which can throw off your entire life? Especially if you are in charge of a household, a parent, or run an online business. Professions that do not allow for sick days or leave from work permission slips.

The cause of this disorder? Sensitivity to a lack of sunlight that results from winter’s shorter days. This causes a disruption in our circadian rhythm or internal body clock. The degree of this sensitivity results in a combination of other factors. Including your geography, genetics, and individual brain chemistry.

With SAD, the lack of sunlight causes the brain to work overtime producing melatonin, the hormone that regulates your body’s sleep patterns. A hormone that has been linked to depression.

Which can cause major issues for those living in uppermost parts of the United States, those living in southern Canada, and due to changing climate change patterns, many other parts of the world that otherwise wouldn’t have known severe winter climate patterns even thirty years ago?

It doesn’t take a shrink to confirm that the weather affects your mood. If it’s rainy, things can get a little gloomy. If it’s sunny, there’s often an extra pep in your step. But what do you do if the winter depression is affecting you now?

9 ways you can start to better your SAD symptoms this winter

Spend time in nature

Spending time in nature, if only for a few minutes, can help ease symptoms of SAD. Try to get outside within two hours of waking up. Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, spending some time in the daylight can be a big help. Soaking in a little sun, even on cloudy days, can help recharge your spirits, give your body essential D and K vitamins, and give you a chance to put your world into perspective. Just remember, sun damage can occur even on cloudy days. So always wear your SPF when going outdoors, even in winter!

Let there be light

Many doctors may prescribe light therapy to reduce SAD symptoms. By way of the box form. Light therapy boxes range in brightness and type of light, so consult a physician before buying one. Here’s an affordable example. Remember, in winter sunscreen is still a must when spending time outdoors even for short periods of time!

Talk it out

One study found cognitive behavioral therapy was just as effective as light therapy in treating SAD. A combination of talk therapy and light therapy together was also effective. So, if you need a way to beat the winter blues, talking to others about your mood may be a great first step!

Take a walk

Regular exercise can reduce symptoms of moderate, nonseasonal depression. Studies suggest a combination of exercise and light therapy can also help treat SAD. So put Netflix on pause and consider going for a walk instead. Your mood will thank you!

Go for complex carbs

Complex carbohydrates, including peas, beans, whole grains, and vegetables, are foods your body can turn into glucose (blood sugar) in the body and are used as energy. Glucose is what is used in the cells of the body and in the brain. Complex carbohydrates can help maintain levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. So eating complex carbs can help you lose weight, have more energy, and beat SAD symptoms in their tracks!

Meditate

Meditation is learning how to quiet your mind in the middle of chaos. It also helps you be intentional about how you react to your moods. Consistently practicing this form of focus balances seasonal depression by decreasing anxiety and enhancing overall well-being.

Create a Schedule

People suffering from SAD typically gain weight and can’t sleep during the winter months. Creating a schedule that enables you to wake up daily at the same time, being consistent in your exposure to daylight, and charting your healthy eating habits can help you improve SAD symptoms long beyond the current cold winter months.

Essential Oils

Essentials oils, the purest essence of a plant, can help promote restoration in the body and influence moods. They have shown to have the effect of an antidepressant on depressive disorders. Some of my favorites to fight SAD symptoms each winter: basil, bergamot, cardamom, grapefruit, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, and sandalwood.

Dawn Simulators

Toss those loud, annoying alarms and stop relying on digital smartphone apps. Even as a minimalist, I love waking up peacefully with clocks that mimic the changing light of the sun. Dawn simulators, or light-generating alarm clocks, gradually wake you up with light that increases in intensity to simulate morning sunshine using full-spectrum light, which is as close to natural light as possible. At both dusk and dawn each day. I keep my simulator bedside and its usage has helped me fight SAD symptoms each winter season immensely.

Those are my 9 tips for helping to minimize the symptoms of SAD this season. Though cold weather is likely to have a lot of us wishing for spring, it’s important not to cast off SAD as an inevitable winter side effect. Taking action when symptoms hit could make the difference between a lonesome stretch and a happy winter season. If you suffer from SAD, consider trying these tips today!

Now I want to ask, do you suffer from SAD symptoms? If so, what are your best tips for keeping the winter blues at bay? I’d love to hear your advice below!

Where to Save and Where to Spend for the Ultimate Everyday Wardrobe

When we look into our wardrobes and moan that there’s nothing to wear, it’s all too easy to jump in the car and head to the shops for a bit of a spree to brighten up your wardrobe. Whilst sometimes you might have saved and budgeted for this, doing it on a whim can be damaging to your personal finances. Below, you’ll find some wardrobe items and ideas that will freshen up your look and provide you with a solid foundation on which to build on a budget. You’ll also find some items that we think it’s worth spending a little more on – both so they’ll last, and because they’re the thing a look is built around. So read on for six ways you can reimagine your wardrobe.

Jeans

This is one area where it’s good to budget for a slightly pricier pair. A good pair of jeans will last you for years – Levi’s are so committed to this that every pair of jeans they sell comes with a two-year warranty. Once you’ve found the perfect pair, you’ll find they’re worth every penny. Not only will they be the basis of many different outfits, but get them fitting right and they’ll make you feel fantastic as well.

Tops and Tees

An iconic t-shirt can make your outfit. Create the perfect casual outfit, whether you’re looking for raglan shirts or jersey long-sleeved tops. Wear them under cardigans and shirts and they’re perfect for using to layer up other items, so you can shop around for the best bargains on your tees.

 Bra

Similar to jeans, this is one item when a poor fit can really ruin your day. Bad bras can give you back problems, as well as not providing you with the support to comfortably go about your day. A well-fitting bra will give you the shape you’re looking for beneath any and all of your clothes so it’s worth buying the best quality you can afford.

Repurpose Old Clothes

Even if you’re not handy with a needle and thread, there are plenty of simple ways you can repurpose old clothes. Not just for things that have started to fall apart, if there’s something you aren’t wearing anymore, would you use it if it was something else? Repurposing can breathe new life into old items and make you feel as if you’ve got a whole new wardrobe.

Swap Shop

Organize a swap party with your friends. Everyone has items in their wardrobe that are gathering dust. Either you’ve kept it because it might one day fit again or somehow appeal to whatever side of you it was that bought it, or you’re keeping it for sentimental purposes. Well, try taking a picture of clothes you don’t want to forget because of the memories attached to them and get swapping.

Makeup

Not one to cut back on, cheap makeup can cause you skin problems and even allergic reactions. There are still plenty of ways to manage your makeup and skincare routine economically, but remember that good makeup will last (you don’t need much) and a fresh face is always a great look.

Why Bloggers Should Discuss Politics

Please note, this post is sponsored by Diamond Bloggers. All opinions expressed are my own. Thank you.

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” -Plato

Politics can be boring. Politics can seem irrelevant. Politics can seem like a bunch of people endlessly yelling at one another. Politics can cause tensions, even among the oldest of friends. Yet, politics are extremely important and affects nearly every aspect of our day-to-day lives.

I believe that we have a civic duty to be informed, individuals.  Especially as bloggers and influencers. As we are in a unique position, by way of our reach and platform,  to proactively impact and promote our followers and readers to utilize their rights as citizens to vote whenever an opportunity presents itself. To not just promote reviews and products but that of the many benefits that come our way through the political process. Including political activism through voter reach. And it is this reason that bloggers, influencers, podcasters, and freelance writers should discuss politics on their respective platforms.

As political activism is paramount to necessary domestic political change. From abolishing slavery to the enfranchisement of women, political activism, by way of the written word, has helped to desegregate our society. Political activism aids the rights of the terminally ill, the elderly, veterans, children, labor laws, victims’ rights, the religious and the centrist alike.

The entire history of our country, from Revolution to modern-day, has been woven through with political activism. In our current society, political activism advocates for de-escalation training for every police department in America, the reexamination of the Brady Bill, as well as a proposed increase to the Federal Minimum Wage Law. All necessary actions needed to ensure the proper advancement of American society as a whole. So you see, the entire history of our country, from Revolution to our modern-day, has been changed for the good when ordinary citizens vote.

While it may feel like our vote won’t be able to cause waves in the grand scheme of things, that it is pointless to vote. But imagine if everyone had that mindset. Hardly anyone would vote. This is little more than apathy disguised as political activism.

Why discuss voting and politics on your platforms

The bottom line for me is this: When you don’t vote, you’re letting other people decide your future. You’re saying that you don’t care what happens to your nation, to your community, on your street, and in your home.

If you’re worried about your vote not counting in today’s election, then let’s look at local elections. Accordingly to PEW Research, fewer than a quarter of all Americans participate in local elections. Whereas nearly half of all Americans vote in national elections. Statistically, when it comes to the presidential ballot, your vote matters more

Just as within each town in America where city managers, city council members, and ombudsman, elected officials whose terms of office affect the day-to-day actions of your community by way of the allocation of grant and tax funding, local option levies, and laws concerning drug use and incarceration, as does the office of president when it comes to the world stage. The office of the president affects your life.

Even with presidential elections, voter turnout is not what it should be. There are many citizens who don’t bother until the general election comes about in November to decide on their own political prerogative. Ignoring their own voting voice during the primary and caucus season. Seasons that affect primary politics in a major and important way.

While we know that today’s presidential election vote is very controversial and contentious, it’s still no less important. Educate yourself. Be open to new ideas. Pay attention to the news. Don’t let other people decide elections for you. Show that you care.

Every citizen has the right to vote, but no citizen is obligated to do so. But they should be. While it might sound cliche, someone did die for you to have the right to vote. Others gave their life’s blood. And still, more continue to give all that they have to make this nation a better place to live, by way of their term in office. I believe they are called community organizers.

How to write about politics on your platform

The same can be said for the need for bloggers, podcasters, and influencers discussing politics on their sites. While it’s an exciting time to write about politics, bloggers who ordinarily don’t write about politics can easily be intimidated by just the thought of doing so. Questions like, “Can I write authoritatively about the subject? Do I know all sides of the issue? What if my readers know more about the subject than I do?” can flood their content calendars more than prose or product reviews.

While there certainly are some risks involved but if you get it right, the potential rewards can range are beyond important. As writers and influencers, we have our ear to the pulse of current events, including politics. We also care about our followers, readers, and subscribers. They, realistically speaking, that of their families, careers, finances, and health, too. This is why we owe it to our readers to be more than just lifestyle, foodie, or mommy bloggers. We cannot hide behind the guide of being non-political. As no aspect of our modern lives, or reader’s lives, is unaffected by the current politics in the United States.

For those looking to include politics on their platforms, consider these 7 tips to help build your confidence when it comes to writing posts and pieces of a political nature:

Keep it simple and stay focused

It’s easy to get caught up in every detail about a particular issue, especially if this is one of your only political posts and you feel like you need to get it all out. Do your best to simplify the post as much as possible. Keeping nuances to the comments section or follow-up posts. When it comes to writing about politics, it’s all about organizing principles. Focusing on the exact reason the issue is important to your readers, who the key players are, and what the potential political outcome is. Once you’re done, edit away anything that isn’t necessary—and always provide readers additional resources to make informed, cohesive decisions for themselves.

Maintain your writers’ voice

When you’re out of your comfort zone, it’s really easy to take on the voice of the subject matter in lieu of your own. Fight this—as your readers will notice! On more than one occasion when I’ve written about subjects that I knew would be important to my readers but weren’t exactly comfortable, I received reader emails asking if somebody else wrote the post or why I was dispassionate style-wise. Again, editing comes in very handy here when the time to put yourself back into your post in political postings.

Make each post relevant to your audience right away

This is good advice for any post, but more than ever your first line on a politically-focused piece. If readers aren’t used to seeing politics posts on your blog, you should help them understand why it’s there immediately! Try tying it into a previous post you’ve written. Or express outrage that your readers would likely share. Otherwise, readers might think you’re shifting focus and that it’s not “their” blog anymore.

Create an official statement

When writing political posts, always tie-in official governmental agency posts. This solidifies authority to your post. These resources can be found on each specific agency’s website.  For example, if you write about technology, look at the FCC website. If you’re writing a post about your city’s school system, look at your state’s Department of Education website. You don’t have to agree with the statement, but using it lends credibility to your post and your readers will know exactly what you’re standing for, or against, officially.

Use video

News agencies like Reuters, provide fairly well-balanced reporting pieces in a video format that you can embed in your post. This reporting style can help build a foundation to carry out your viewpoint throughout your post.

Use pictures

Using pictures to spruce up your writing on political issues not only dresses up your post, but it also connects a name with a face for important social issues. There are lots of times your readers will know who somebody is from television or the newspaper, but can’t remember their name. A picture elevates this burden and adds another level of why the post is relevant to them.

Transparency

When writing political pieces, an extra ounce of social transparency is key. Sharing why you believe in an issue, started your platform, or how you raise your family or make a living can bridge the political decide more than you’ll ever know. When you replace “us and them” statements with “me and my,” your posts will not only be more credibly sound, but will likely make you more endearing to your readers, and taken more seriously, too!

Which is something I try to bring to various posts on this site? Not just in terms of finance, plant-based eating, lifestyle pieces, or product reviews. I’m generally not speaking about truisms or generalities. I’m speaking about realities. My reality. You see, I’m a woman. I come from a long line of immigrants, unionists, rabble-rousers, several teenage mothers, and my poor white trash distant relations from centuries past who lived on the wrong side of the tracks. I’m also the wife of a public educator and a veteran of foreign war. I work from home in a volatile financial climate. I am a citizen of the world and my world faces an uncertain future due to climate change. Which by the way, is a real and very true reality. I’m also among the ten percent of women in this world who possess a professional degree, who worries over the legacy she will leave her family.

An example of great political lifestyle writing

So what does this mean? It is my belief, that as influencers, we cannot afford to stand idly by. We must be educational and statistical emissaries for our audiences. Particularly in election years. Journalists offering factual information that impacts the lives of the working masses in this country. As our readers are not just random statistics or stats to be checked off on demographic boxes. Writers like David Urban, lobbyist, political operative, and political commentator for CNN, who often stares cutting-edge economic and political advice, as well as lending his efforts to both the 2016 Donald Trump presidential campaign and helping to orchestrate the 2016 Republican National Convention, where he served as a senior advisor in the successful effort to win Pennsylvania. Utilizing both his on-screen and behind the screen efforts to proactively advance the ideals of the modern American voting system to his reader-base online.

Urban serves as a perfect example as to why influencers cannot simply refusing to vote is not an affirmative political choice. For when candidates are odious, when their campaign traffic in character-assassination when election ads are no more than shameless pandering funded by unknown, unresearched super PACs, you might think that as a rational voter you should disengage from politics and not vote. But this idea is little more than entitlement disguised as a conscientious objector.

Voted printed papers on white surface

A great example as to why influencer needs to simply do more politically. To do more than turn mudslinging candidates, while we share reviews and recipes online. To share more of our lives. To discuss how politics influence what and how we share media online. And why we work or will not work with specific companies and why. Without this disclosure and transparency, we are no different than unscrupulous lobbyists. Folks who silently sympathize with everyday Americans but derive their livelihoods by the promotion of big pharma, GMO-laden foods, police brutality, and the underfunding of urban schools for posting profit. As influencers, we are called to do more.

To this end, I am reminded of the words of Dr. King, “In the end, we remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Apathy is passive aggression in action. And apathy has no place in influencing online.

Which is why discuss politics, voting, and social advocacy on my platforms as well as collaborate with like-minded influencers who feel the same. Keep in mind-I’m a lifelong voter. No one has to persuade me to show up on Election Day to cast a ballot. since the first time my grandmother allowed me to enter the voting booth with her as a child, I’ve been fascinated by the election process. The communal spirit of voting. Having served as the first female president of one of my college’s political clubs on campus and helped to run several college voter registration drives. This is why years after casting my first official ballot, I’m still moved by the civic ritual of coming together as equals, peacefully engaged in self-government. Being an influencer, bloggers, podcasters, and freelance writer encourage me to do so more.

For me, voting, and standing by my political beliefs, is akin to an act of faith- faith that government of, by, and for the people still has real meaning, notwithstanding the inescapable hold of apathy in America. And this political activism cannot stop after this coming November. As political awareness begins the minute you cast your vote and begin to live with election day results. Continuing each time you purchase an item, spend your wages, and plan for your future. For you and your readers.

Friends, particularly bloggers, podcasters, and influencers, I urge you to pay attention to issues affecting our political climate at home, educate yourself on candidate platforms, attend political rallies, and rally behind political candidates and parties that will work towards bettering the issues you’re passionate about. As politics are not topics to be avoided, but rather embraced. It’s a way to show your community your willingness to give back to your readership and your greater community at large. So, get involved. Share unbiased political findings. Encourage reader voter registration. And when you can, vote. Because political apathy is not OK.

You matter. Your readers matter. Your sponsors’ matter. Therefore you should vote. And never be afraid to discuss politics with those you influencer online.

Better Recipes Begin With European Olive Oil

Disclosure: This post was made possible by MomsMeet.com and Flavor Your Life Campaign. I was compensated for my participation in this campaign, but all opinions are 100% mine. Read full Disclosure Policy here

If you’re anything like me, then olive oil is a staple in your home pantry. My love of olive oil stems from my childhood growing up along the shore in South Jersey. I lived in a very diverse multi-cultural neighborhood full of rich, vibrant Italian, Greek, Eastern European, and Jewish cultures. Where around suppertime each night the sweet smell of European olive oil perfumed our street by way of each family’s distinct culinary traditions. Making European olive oil one of my sweetest childhood memories. Which is why I stock my kitchen with quality European olive oil.

I use European olive oil daily in a variety of ways. From dips to salad dressings, it’s my go-to oil at home. And no matter how I use it one thing’s for sure- when it comes to olive oil quality is everything. My Grandmother would always make a point of using olive oil in most of her cooking and now I do the same. One of my favorite treats, a fresh baguette and olive oil for dipping. Nothing is better, friends!

Recently I was given the opportunity to sample the Flavor Your Life European Olive Oil. This campaign, supported by the European Union, is dedicated to providing North American consumers with the latest information about European extra virgin olive oil and to educate consumers of the lasting health benefits that European olive oil provides. As I mentioned earlier, quality is what olive oil is all about. I loved the flavor of this oil and it definitely made a difference when cooking with it.

As I mentioned earlier, when choosing olive oil for your family at home, quality is key. So here are a few key points to consider about olive oil before your next purchase.

European Olive Oil facts:

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is the freshly pressed juice of olives.
  • It is cold-pressed, meaning it is pressed without heat or chemicals.
  • Quality olive oil must contain acidity levels below 0.8% or virtually free of acidity.
  • This has nothing to do with the pH or taste, but the fatty inner acids.
  • Higher levels of acids indicate improper production and product rancidity.
  • Proper peroxide value must be below 20 milliequivalents of oxygen/kilo of oil, which indicates the amount of oxidation or aging that’s occurred.
  • Aging olive oil can be measured in varying degrees that olives are exposed to oxygen, light, and heat.

Are you ready for summertime? Enjoy some outdoor grilling with these fresh and tasty grilled shrimp skewers! @zealousmom.com

Why Choose European olive oil

  • The olive tree has been revered in Europe since Antiquity.
  • For thousands of years, olive growers have cultivated hundreds of varieties of olive trees (cultivars), optimizing each cultivation for different environment conditions and terrains to produce the most delicious yields possible.
  • This resulted in a centuries-old pact between olive growers and consumers the world over.
  • The greatest impact on olive oil taste is the type of olive tree (cultivar), region the olive is grown (which affects climate and soil), and the time of harvest.
  • Europe offers a vast array of avor pro less, so keep a variety of oils in your pantry for different occasions.
  • Olives are often harvested early in the season, typically in late August (varies by region).
  • Olives are harvested when they are under-ripe. Which produces oils that are greener, more bitter and pungent.
  • Olives harvested at the end of the season, late November into December, are over-ripe and tend to taste milder.

How I love to use European olive oil at home

One of my favorite ways to use olive at home is by brushing fresh vegetables with European olive oil and then grilling the vegetables. I use these vegetables to make pressed paninis, as healthy chip alternatives to pair with hummus, as entrees for quick dinners on Meatless Mondays, or cut up and added to summer jar salads. If I’m feeling super fancy, I’ll pour some into a little dish with some salt, pepper and maybe a little Parmesan cheese to dip my vegetables! So good and so simple.

I cannot speak highly enough of European olive oil. Each time I’ve tried my sample in recent summer fare, I’m taken back to my year studying abroad in Paris, France and my semester abroad with my former exchange family in Saint-Lô, France. Places where I sampled some of my favorite olive oil-infused dishes! I’m also reminded of my month-long trip to Tuscany where I was able to taste all the different olive oils from the region, oils that were nothing short of divine.

Tips for Cooking with and Storing Olive Oil

During the course of this review, I learned several things including how to use a variety of olive oils. I have always just used the at-hand store oils, but now I’d like to seek out different types to enhance the food we cook.

Despite using olive oil all the time, little did I know that we were storing it incorrectly? The Flavor Your Life website says that olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark place. Fifty-seven degrees is optimal. In addition, you’re not supposed to store the oil by the stove, which is exactly where we keep it.  This is why we will be storing our olive oil moving forward in a more conducive location. Now, if you’d like to learn more about European Extra Virgin Olive Oil as well as the various types available, be sure to check out the Flavor Your Life website.

With each bite, I’m reminded of how European olive oil varies by region as well. That Spanish extra virgin olive oil, golden yellow oil with a fruity flavor that lends itself well to tapas. Or the mild natural taste of the French varieties as well as the bold taste of Italian varieties, oils are known for their earthy, herbal aroma and rich grass-rich flavor. Then there is my favorite olive oil, Greek olive oil, a bold, seasoned oil that’s delicious in every conceivable way. As you can see, the sky is the limit in terms, in terms of the flavor that European Extra Virgin Olive Oil brings to the table.

As you can see, the sky is the limit when it comes to dishes that can be made with the rich, bold, delectable taste of  European olive oil. Whatever you cook, bake, grill, or saute, just a humble drizzle European olive oil can turn dinners into memories. So, I encourage you all to try European olive oil in your own home.

You can also stay connected with the Flavor Your Life campaign on Facebook and Twitter, and if you’d like to see my recipe for European olive oil grilled vegetables below as well!

So now friends, I have to ask, how will you be using European olive oil in your own kitchens this season? I’d love to hear about it below!

9 Minimalist Christmas Gift Exchange Ideas

“When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things- not the great occasions- that give off the greatest glow of happiness.” –Bob Hope

I am often asked for advice on celebrating Christmas as a minimalist. And when I am, I always share that my minimalist holiday philosophy is simple, straight-forward, and easy to manage: Remember the true meaning of the season, always give more than you receive, look for ways to exchange talents and experiences first, and for everyone else, give holiday cheer.

But even with this in mind, I’m always mindful to respect gift-giving as a love language, in so much as that I do not want to rob my family members and friends of that simple, time-honored joy. While I prefer experiences over consumerism when it comes to holiday gift-giving, I still hold steadfast to the idea that even as minimalists, we own it to others to be a gracious, humble, appreciative person, who is full of good cheer, or at the very least, a person who can provide a gift wish-list suitable for the simpler palette.

Now when it comes to the kiddos and holiday gifts, I always revert back to my grandmother’s one-in-and-one-out rule, which stipulates that for every gift that comes into our home another you already own must be removed. I love this idea as it can help you to not only reevaluate your toy boxes and closet space in the months leading up the holiday season but to also help promote a seasonal mindset of giving.

While I am not the first to write about enjoying a simpler Christmas. In fact, there are countless articles, posts, guides, and blogs that can help you enjoy a more simple, stress-free Christmas. But I still know there are still others who will want to exchange gifts this season, so in an effort to create a valuable resource for myself and others I’ve put together a list of 9 Minimalist Christmas Gift Exchange Ideas that can help you make the most of this current season of giving.

Pick a Secret Santa

This game is a classic. I mean, who doesn’t love a Secret Santa? I know my husband looks forward to his Secret Santa week at school each year. So why not move this tradition from the corporate world to the comfort of your own home and institute a minimalist, budget-friendly family Secret Santa exchange. By only giving one gift to a family member, and stipulating an amount that can be spent on each person, you can focus more on the gift-giving experience rather than spend money on several gifts that may or may not hit the mark with your loved ones.

Looking for an extra cool twist? Up the ante by asking family members to leave secret notes and treats for the person whose name they’ve drawn during the month of December!

Make a coupon book for family members

I love this idea because it’s personalized and can be a lot of fun depending on how creative you get. Think digital and personalized. Go for coupons like “Making Your Bed for a Week,” “Doing the Dishes for 1 Week,” or “Letting You Pick the TV Show We Watch on Saturday afternoons for a month.” Choose simple things that can make other family member’s life a little easier or a little more fun in the new year!

Set gift expectations early

It’s important to set gift expectations for kids early on. Let them know that even if they have a long wish list, only a few presents will show up under the tree. This can be made into a learning exercise by having your children prioritize which gifts they really want, even as part of a 4-Gift Christmas. Also, consider asking your kids to choose an equal amount of toys to donate as they are asking for during the holiday season. This will help instill a sense of charity in your kids and help keep clutter in their rooms and playrooms as bay.

Take a family trip

Instead of spending money on everyone’s presents, consider pooling your family resources and using the money to go on an outing, a staycation for the week before New Year’s Day, or even a small weekend trip away. Plus you’ll even be able to find some good deals during the week between Christmas and New Year’s while the kids are still on vacation from school. Even if you just travel to a nearby town or a local park, it’s the act of getting away as a family that matters.

Let your kids do the shopping

If your kiddos are old enough to safely shop on their own, or in pairs, give your kids a set amount of cash, and allow them time to search for deals and coupons online, and then let them shop for their own family gifts. This will get your kids geared towards the not so distant days in the future when they will need to plan for their own holiday spending. It’s never too early to gear kids into utilizing the cash-only holiday mindset!

Give back as a family

You can sponsor a family in need by making donation boxes as a family through your local Salvation ArmyFamilies First, Operation Christmas Child, Operation Shoebox, or Soldiers’ Angels, It’s a wonderful way to feel the real meaning of the holidays while connecting as a family over universal, shared values. Is there anything better than that?

Trade favorite recipes

For extended family, have everyone make their favorite dish or dessert and attach hand-written recipe cards, one for every member of the family, when they bring their dishes to your home as part of a family meal swap in the week’s leading up Christmas. This can help everyone in the family can build their own family recipe book and have a few fewer meals to prepare too!

Share a family photo collage

Photos are one of the least expensive and most treasured gifts you can give. So why not build a family photo album together? Have each member of your family print up to 10 of their favorite photos from that year for each person in your family. Then, share your memories while enjoying time together. You can also have each family member bring an empty photo album with them to fill with the photos they receive so they can look back on their wonderful holiday experience next year. Looking for a more

Looking for a more zero-waste collage tradition? Have your family members create free collages online through Canva or Pic Monkey, and send it to friends and family to give them an awesome digital photo keepsake or personalized holiday screen saver!

Create a family gratitude journal

Grab a beautiful journal or inexpensive notebook and set it in a public place where every member of the family has access to it. Starting on December 1, each person will write one thing they’re thankful for in the journal each day. At the end of the following year, and during your next holiday season, you can all look back on your thankful messages together!

So, everyone, those are my 9 Minimalist Christmas Gift Exchange Ideas. I hope you will all find them helpful as you plan for your remaining holiday shopping trips in the weeks to come. Now I have to ask, do you have any special or memorable Christmas Gift Exchange Ideas you would like to share? I’d love to hear about them below!
