Homemade Wall Putty!

download

Attention savvy savers! As Spring has sprung, as has the itech to clean and remodel our homes and spaces! Today I have a great way to do just that, homemade wall putty! This is my go-to, non-toxic, pulled right from the cupboard recipe:

1) Mix 2 tbsp. of table salt and 2 tbsp. of cornstarch in a small bowl.

2 Add 5 tbsp. of cold tap water, a tablespoon at a time. Stir as you add the water until the mixture is a thick paste. If the mixture is runny, add 1 tsp. of salt and 1 tsp. of cornstarch and stir until the mixture has thickened without bubbles.

3 Use the paste to fill small holes in a wall. Apply it to the holes with a putty knife. Use the knife to smooth the homemade spackle so it is level with the wall. Allow the spackle to dry for one hour.

4 Sand the spackled area lightly with 100-grit sandpaper.

5 Paint the wall if desired, including the area that has been spackled.

Put-It-In-There Chicken Pot Pie!

IMG_0067

Hello again, savvy savers! Today I wanted to post a recipe I have for night when I am running low on time, energy, and the ambition to move, let alone cook! Here is my go-to put-it-in-there chicken pot pie. Why put-it-in-there pot pie? If you have it on hand, and its organic, put-it-in-there! Leftover chicken, check! Produce needing to be balanced, awesome! A little cheese, cream cheese, or butter, lovely! Assuming you actually need to go to the store, another version can be made with canned chicken, frozen veggies, and the like from the Dollar Tree for around $5.00 for a family of 4! It will be wonderful, promise!

Ingredients:
1 2/3 cups fresh or frozen mixed vegetables
1 cup cut-up cooked chicken, per four people
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup
1 cup Bisquick baking mix
1/2 cup milk
1 egg

Directions:
1) Preheat your oven to 400ºF.
2) Mix vegetables, chicken, and soup in ungreased glass pie plate, or covered cassarole dish.
3) Stir together remaining ingredients with fork until blended. Pour into pie plate. Spread evenly.
4) Bake 30 minutes, or until golden brown; if you can smell the baking mix, its done!

Enjoy!

Wednesday Ways To Save: Freecycle.org!

download

Hello again, savvy savers! Today’s Wednesday’s Ways To Save is about one of my favorite sites on the internet, Freecycle.org! I love Freecycle. When I say I love Freecycle, I mean it, truly! Freecycle.org is a website, run through Yahoo, that connects people looking to get rid of household items, with people who need certain items; this method helps keep belongings out of landfills, and puts it in the hands of those who truly need, or want, the items! One great bit of advice I give friends is that if they are looking for furniture, craft materials, building materials, toys, clothing, uniforms, or some other needs, try Freecycle first! I thought I’d share some tips on Freecycle etiquette that I’ve picked up in my time using five freecycle groups in three cities here in my area. Most people use Freecycle to give stuff away because it gives them the warm fuzzies, but for me it’s about helping out my community, home, and planet.

1) Start a Freeycle.org account; sign-up for an account, find the group closest to your town, and once your account is approved by a group moderator, make sure that the organizations emails are secured as safe-senders in your email accounts.

2) Post an offer. With any free site, its always best to start terms off with your best foot forward, and this case its by posting an offer to give away a free item you can part with; with Spring cleaning on the near horizon this should not be a hard endeavor!

3) Ask for an item. Once you have given an item away, or made arrangement to do so, be sure to post a group note stating it has been taken, and while on the site post your first request! When requesting items, be sensible and respectful. Always be friendly.

4) If someone offers you an item, be prompt in making arrangements to pick the item up, and after doing so always remember to shoot the sender a thank you email, as well as to return to the site and list the item as haven been received!

5) Keep up with Freecycle.org emails. Be sure to check back often, and if you are able to do so, offer items to wanted ads, and never be too proud to ask for items from others! You will never receive a blessing with a closed hand, or mind!

With all of this stated, I wanted to give you all an example of one set of items I received recently. There is a lady in my local group. She and I have exchanged items several times, and as she knows that I coupon and upcycle furniture, she often writes me to take things off her hands. This past weekend she wrote and offered me a pair of perfectly fine, white rocking chairs! Why was she getting rid of them? She felt that my husband and I, as a young couple, should have a place to sit and converse with one another! Is that not amazing? In addition to this, over the past year I have received antique mason jars, fabric, buttons, end tables, trunks, and other fun items!

I highly recommend this site, and hope you will use it soon!

Clean Toilet Bowl Ring With Gatorade!

Hello again, savvy savers! Today finds us with another awesome, affordable cleaning solution for a common bathroom problem, toilet bowl ring! I have a tried-and-true method to remove toilet bowl ring stains, Gatorade! Yes, America’s favorite sports-drink is also an awesome, affordable cleaner! Simply pour 2 cups of Gatorade, for harsh set-in stains, and for general cleaning use 2 ounces, or 1/4 cup, in the toilet and let sit for twenty minutes. Scrub and flush. The citric acid is the cleaning agent, and the hero of this piece. What’s better, I often find sales on Gatorade, and my local Winn-Dixie sells single bottles, enough for six cleanings, for only $0.69! That blows the lowest price I had previously seen at the Dollar Tree for Lysol Cling Toilet Bowl Cleaner of $1.00, by a whopping $0.31! You can clean your toilet for $0.10 a week, if using it for normal cleaning, as mentioned above! How awesome is that!

Too-Tired-To-Bake Trifle Pudding!

Trifle-Pudding-Recipe

Good afternoon, savvy savers! Today’s recipe is for one of my families favorite any time of the year, my classic Too Tired To Bake Trifle Pudding! I can make this dessert from ingredients solely from the Dollar Tree, use frozen cake, cupcake, and cookie scraps crumbled to save money, and aside from the berries which I often buy on buy-one-get-one-free sales from Winn-Dixie, I can make this dessert for under $4.00, which consists of fourteen 1 cup servings. The Trifle dish itself was purchased at Walmart for $4.98! This is a favorite recipe, and one that I find works best made the night before, which allows the juice, pudding, and layering-medium of choice to meld together!

Trifle Pudding Ingredients:
2 dozen cookies, lady fingers, cake slices, or cupcake crumbles (6 cups of crumbles, if used)
1 lg. container (12 oz.) whipped topping
2 lg. pkgs. vanilla instant pudding
2 pts. fresh or frozen strawberries
1/4 c. orange or pineapple juice
Maraschino cherries & pecans, or cookie toppings; to taste and whatever you have on hand!

How to make Trifle Pudding:

1) If using fresh strawberries, hull, wash, slice and add sweetener to taste; a good rule of thumbs for making a simple fruit glaze is one tablespoon of water to 1/4 cup sweetener. Once the fruit is glazed, let stand ten minutes.

2) Line a trifle bowl with whatever cookies, lady fingers, cake slices, or cupcake crumbles you have on hand.

3) Make the vanilla pudding according to instructions on the package.

4) Sprinkle the cookies, lady fingers, cake slices, or cupcake crumbles with orange or pineapple juice, then put a layer of pudding, strawberries and whipped topping.

5) Repeat step 4 with a second layer and end with the whipped topping.

6) Maraschino cherries and pecans may be added, if desired.

7)I sometimes use a homemade hardening shell instead, which I make with one packet hot cocoa mix, a pat of butter, and a touch of milk, layered on the dessert, and chilled until hardened.

8) Refrigerate to chill before serving.

9) Enjoy!

Tips From The Man Cave: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft!

Good afternoon, savvy savers! This post is coming from Daddy Bear, otherwise known as my husband! I have decided to spotlight a weekly series from the male perspective on saving, which will be called, “Tips From The Man Cave.” This week I asked Daddy Bear to spotlight a game that could be obtained, played, and maintained by kids; this posting is focused on children from the age of ten and up.

So, without further ado, here is a Tip From The Man Cave:

hearthstone-heroes-of-warcraft

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a online collectible card game much in the same vein as Magic: the gathering and Pokemon. I would like to offer a quick review of it and some great deals that you could cash in on for your spouse, your kids, or if you enjoy good online games like I do….youself!

First and foremost, let me let you know I am already a big time supporter of all things Blizzard. I already play World of Warcraft (Blizzard’s headliner franchise) and Diablo III. Blizzard as a company is constantly giving fans of all their games something to look forward to and a great game experience with whatever the title. I played Magic: the Gathering in college and for several years thereafter, and within the last year I have started playing a local comic book store, in my area. I enjoyed playing in the event nights they had every Friday. It was great. I could play, hang out, and even manage to win a few tournaments. Then bang, the shop closed. I began to give up on the idea of having something Magic-like to enjoy. Suddenly, in the last few weeks I discovered Hearthstone. Hearthstone is a game I first heard about in the podcasts genre, and was I pleasantly surprised to discover that it was free to play, and decided to download it and give it a try. Low and behold, I found a good a replacement for Magic as could be found; I can have the fun and excitement of planning a deck and playing others, without having to wait for Friday to come along! What’s better, is that I am to customize the amount of time I play around my busy working schedule, I can play whenever have a few extra minutes to sit and unwind.

The game itself is straightforward. This is an online, kid-friendly, non-monetary card deck game. Players earn their started deck by playing against the computer. Players are represented as heros in the game. Starting at 30 life, or level 30, the game proceeds in a turn by turn format as each player uses their 30 card deck of creature cards and spell cards to reduce their opponent’s hero to reduce their opponent’s hero to zero life. After six rounds of playing against computer run opponents that explain the game mechanics and how different cards interact, the game sets players up to play against other in head to head matches or in the Arena. Head to head matches can be practice or ranked, and often feature bright, colorful screens! Practice matches are straightforward head to head with nothing online but a single game, and can help build useful math skills as well. This mode is best for putting together deck you want to play with for the other mode, ranked. Ranked play allows for the collection of ranked levels. The amount of wins needed to advance a rank gets larger as you advance and loses will move you backwards. It can be pretty competitive but winning in ranked play really feels great, especially if you play with a deck you created on your own.

Another great aspect of the game is Arena play. Arena play offer a lot of the same thrills as ranked play but offers a new aspect that makes it more of a challenge but also easier to succeed, all players must draft the cards they play with. This mechanic allows any player with knowledge about the worth of the cards offered to put together a competitive deck without the worry of having to have the best of the best cards to be competitive for the top spots. Players receive rewards for completing tasks in play mode, but those rewards are even bigger in Arena play.

What’s best about this game is free to play, there are no additional token, add-ons, or the like to add to the game, ever! The game rewards the player with gold and Arcane dust that can be used to buy expert pack (gold) or to create specific cards you really want (Arcane Dust). Cards in your collection can be turned into Arcane dust but will be gone from your collection until you receive another as either an in game reward or from an expert pack. The game funds itself. Kids earn their achievements in the game, and in turn their playing equipment as well.

This is a great game for the whole family. It is challenging enough for adults to enjoy without being so complicated that younger family members would be overwhelmed. I recommend you download this game and give it a try. As well, I wanted to mention that this review is unpaid, unsolicited, and is merely my own opinion of both the Hearthstone online game, as well as Blizzard Entertainment itself!

Thanks for hanging out in the cave!

Stockpiling Tip: Pegboards!

IMG_0144

Calling all my fellow couponing stockpilers! Here is a great tip for those of you with existing stockpiles, or those looking to start, I would like to suggest pegboards! I currently have my stockpile in part of my basement and as of last year, had pegboards installed, and it has made all the world in my stockpiling! What’s even better is that I was able to buy hooks online from Amazon here, for for free using survey-earned Amazon cards!

IMG_0137

I am able to categorize my purchases, see what quantities I have, and I honestly like the look of the design; pegboards make me feel like I am shopping from my own home this way!

IMG_0140

Pegboards are reasonable in price, ranging from $10-$15.00 for a sheet that measures 36″x 48″ at my local Lowe’s!

This is a great idea, and one I hope you all will consider using!
