Saving To Go With A Cup Of Joe: Envelope Savings Systems!

IMG_73751

Good morning, savvy savers! For todays Savings On The Go With A Cup of Joe, I want to post about how my savings journey started, with my Envelope Savings System!

I started using an envelope savings system because on average I found myself overspend by 15% or more, weekly, when my family and I did not use cash to pay for purchases; credit cards, and debit cards for that matter, often mean more debt for me! Like my family, until a year ago, did not have a savings plan in place and that was a huge issue for us! Only a small percentage of families have a system in place to help control the household finances. Using cash to pay for purchases, by way of an envelope system, is a very simple and effective way to control spending, and it has worked well for us.

1) It’s easy to set up the envelope system. Simply put, make a monthly budget, including money for savings, and once your bills have been paid and allocated, withdrawal cash equal to the amount of what you have planned to spend for gas, groceries, parking, hair appointments, and incidentals.

2) Decide as a family what categories of spending you are going to put on a cash basis. Some might prefer to put all of their expenses on a cash basis. For me, cash is always used for food, clothing, gasoline, auto repairs, toiletries, cosmetics, hair care, stockpiling, weekly deals, and mad money.

3) Invest in a pouch to use as your envelope; try the Dollar Tree for such options!

4) Label your envelopes. Get several standard letter size envelopes, or pouches and label then for certain expenses, if you will use them for bills, such as the water company, electric company, or the like. Then create envelopes for personal funds, or group funds, as specified above. I generally use one envelope and break up stacks with sticky notes and paper clips!

5) Once your envelopes are labeled, decide how much you plan to spend on each expense for that period; making sure to go back through and write those amounts on their corresponding envelopes.

6) Be sure to store your envelopes in a safe place. I purchased a $10.00 lock box at Walmart for this purpose and the only two people who have access to place or remove envelopes are the two people who create the funds, my husband and I!

7) Being successful at handling money takes planning. The envelope system is extremely powerful but it is only part of a good financial plan. To effectively manage your personal finances you should also include a monthly budget, spending plan, savings plan and debt reduction plan. Also, be sure to keep your receipts!

8) Remember, when you run out of funds, that’s all you can spend!

I know this list sounds harsh, but trust me, you will save greatly, largely, and quickly! This is the only way I have found to efficiently spend money in an lasting, accountable manner!

Making More Out Of Monday Meals: How To Freeze Fresh Blueberries!

Freezing-Blueberries

Hello again, savvy savers! For the first installment of my new Freezer and Crock Pot Cooking Series, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite and easiest Freezer Cooking Projects, freezing summer blueberries! Why freeze summer blueberries, and summer berries in general? Well, aside from the larger variety this time of year, a lower cost, and the fact that in season berries are not sprayed and treated with the same amount of waxes and preservatives as their winter cousins are, making this the prime time of year for this method!

Cost: $6.00-$8.00, depending on the season, location, etc.

Time: 2.5-3 Hours.

Instructions:

To begin, purchase good quality, organic blueberries; you can often save money by purchasing in bulk from a local farmer’s market or Wholefoods store. Next, pick through your berries and remove any leaves, stems, or hard bits of debris; once picked over transfer your berries to a colander and thoroughly rinse under cool water, and then shake to dry.

Next, add your sugar-substitute or agave syrup to berries, and toss to combine. Now, transfer berries to a lined baking sheet, making sure to arrange berries on an even scattered layered. Now freeze those berries; you will need to freeze your berries for 1-2 hours or until hard. Once frozen, transfer your berries to a ziplock baggie, pre-labeled; each bag should hold 1-2 cups, and will last 12 months in the freezer!

That’s it, easy peasy, huh? When you are ready to use the berries, thaw overnight in the fridge and you’re set!  So, here’s to freezing berries! If you freeze berries, leave me a comment below and let me know about your berry freezer sessions!

Here’s to whole living!

Calling all savvy savers! Today finds us with another awesome book review, and this time the Chance for Love is a 3-book set of Dangerous Romance novels; Broken Build, Hidden Under Her Heart, and Knowing Vera. This is the second series I have reviewed by author Rachelle Ayala.  Without giving away too much of the plot for these books, you must know that in a little over 900 pages, Rachelle managed to build suspense, empathy, completion, romance, and the right blend of chemistry, so well placed, it will make you rethink your ideal of passion in your own life!  and romance without having either overshadowed by the other. To be sure, each book can be an awesome summer stand-alone read, but as a set the novels are superb as well. Broken Build was my favorite of the three books, but not for lack of anything in the other two; you could tell that the plot was well thought out and each characterization meticulously spoken for. The second novel, Hidden Under Her Heart, despite its realistic love scenes, is hysterically eclectic, and a story that I could stand to read several times over. The final novel, Knowing Vera, is the third of the set and and focuses on a girl trying to prove her father’s innocence after a murder.

Rachelle Ayala writing helps the reader run through a list of both emotions and expectations for modern love, in a thrilling, rollercoaster of a ride, and we readers are bettered for having done so!  I’d definitely recommend this boxed set!

Savings On The Go With A Cup Of Joe: Start Saving Tax Receipts From Donated Stockpiled Goods!

images

Good morning, savvy savers! For this weeks Savings On The Go With A Cup Of Joe, I just wanted to give everyone a quick reminder to start saving receipts for all of the donated food that you donate for the remained of the year! Assuming you have decided to donate food and non-perishable goods, even toiletry products, to a local food bank, federally you can request a tax receipt for up to $200.00 annually! With so many savvy savers undergoing spring cleaning this season, and clearing out pantry shelves, why not earn a few extra dollars for all of your hard-earned, couponed goods? If you decide to donate food, make sure you do so with a repetitive 401-c3 non-profit group, and kindly ask for a tax receipt! You are allowed by law to receive the Fair Market Value of your goods, at the time of donation!

This $200.00 can pay to reimburse yourself for the fuel, paper, and ink costs which go into couponing throughout the year, while helping others at the same time!

Be sure to keep your receipts in a safe place for next tax season!

Gardening Update, 6/8!

Gardening-On-a-Budget-Homesteading-and-Health

Happy Sunday, everyone! Here is this weeks gardening update!

This week I was able to plant the other half of my herbs, including my lavender, thyme, basil, lemon grass, parsley, bay leaves, and mint. Also, the tomato sprouts are coming up and in a week, should be able to be thinned, and then planted outside! Even in the face of all the horrific storms this week, everything was thankfully spared, and growing right on schedule! As for the other areas of my year, we have had nearly constant rainfall, so tilling and further planting has been on standstill, for the next three posts, I should have plenty to share; I will be planting both my potted and upside varieties next weekend. Aside from rain, and the largest amount of pollen I have ever seen (we have composted four trash barrels full), out pots of Green beans are beautiful, as seen above!

Also, the squash plant, though small, is growing! In addition, my mum plants from last fall have doubled in size, and will have sucker that need to be plucked in the next few weeks! This week to come I will be planting my hill of strawberries, starting potato and sweet potato towers, as well as creating a summer butterfly flower bed!  As well, my $1.00 rose bushes from Fred’s Super Dollar have thus far produced some of the most beautiful roses I have ever grown, as seen above. They are just so lovely, and I will be giving some today to my wonderful Grandmother for Mother’s Day! I also love my free lattice, as it was recycled from discarded pallets, and works just as well as anything purchased at my local supercenter! I feed my roses a special homemade blend, which i will be blogging about in the weeks to come!

Here’s to next week!
