Tutorial Tuesdays: DIY Hand Sanitizer, $0.15 A Bottle!

Untitled

Hello again, savvy savers! Today I want to share with you my recipe for DIY Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer! I often make this formula in large batches, a bath for each bathroom, kitchen, and work rooms. I can make a 2 cup bottle for only $0.15, a savings of $2.00 a bottle at my local Walmart!; I purchase Aloe Vera gel at my local Dollar Tree, or use aloe gel from my succulents at home. I purchase my essential oils via Amazon.com using earned gift cards online, as well.  I make my blend with all natural ingredients, and find that this blend is the most gentle sanitizer I have used to date!

Here’s how I make it:

  1. Add the following ingredients into a bowl; 2 cup Aloe Vera gel, 2 cup witch hazel, 4 drops of each oil, Tea tree oil, lavender oil, and clove oil.
  2. Gently fold the ingredients together.
  3. Let the blend rest in a bowl for 10 minutes,
  4. This recipe will fill six hand-soap bottles, or 24-pocket-size bottles.
  5. This blend will last indefinitely on counters.
  6. Enjoy!

Saving On The Go With A Cup Of Joe: Envelope Savings System!

IMG_73751

Good morning, savvy savers! For todays Savings On The Go With A Cup of Joe, I want to post about how my savings journey started, with my Envelope Savings System!

I started using an envelope savings system because on average I found myself overspend by 15% or more, weekly, when my family and I did not use cash to pay for purchases; credit cards, and debit cards for that matter, often mean more debt for me! Like my family, until a year ago, did not have a savings plan in place and that was a huge issue for us! Only a small percentage of families have a system in place to help control the household finances. Using cash to pay for purchases, by way of an envelope system, is a very simple and effective way to control spending, and it has worked well for us.

1) It’s easy to set up the envelope system. Simply put, make a monthly budget, including money for savings, and once your bills have been paid and allocated, withdrawal cash equal to the amount of what you have planned to spend for gas, groceries, parking, hair appointments, and incidentals.

2) Decide as a family what categories of spending you are going to put on a cash basis. Some might prefer to put all of their expenses on a cash basis. For me, cash is always used for food, clothing, gasoline, auto repairs, toiletries, cosmetics, hair care, stockpiling, weekly deals, and mad money.

3) Invest in a pouch to use as your envelope; try the Dollar Tree for such options!

4) Label your envelopes. Get several standard letter size envelopes, or pouches and label then for certain expenses, if you will use them for bills, such as the water company, electric company, or the like. Then create envelopes for personal funds, or group funds, as specified above. I generally use one envelope and break up stacks with sticky notes and paper clips!

5) Once your envelopes are labeled, decide how much you plan to spend on each expense for that period; making sure to go back through and write those amounts on their corresponding envelopes.

6) Be sure to store your envelopes in a safe place. I purchased a $10.00 lock box at Walmart for this purpose and the only two people who have access to place or remove envelopes are the two people who create the funds, my husband and I!

7) Being successful at handling money takes planning. The envelope system is extremely powerful but it is only part of a good financial plan. To effectively manage your personal finances you should also include a monthly budget, spending plan, savings plan and debt reduction plan. Also, be sure to keep your receipts!

8) Remember, when you run out of funds, that’s all you can spend!

I know this list sounds harsh, but trust me, you will save greatly, largely, and quickly! This is the only way I have found to efficiently spend money in an lasting, accountable manner!

Savings On The Go With A cup Of Joe: How I Earned $420.00 Last Year Taking Online Surveys!

img_73751

Good morning, savvy savers! For this weeks “Savings On The Go With A Cup Of Joe, I want to discuss a simple, easy way to increase your savings account in yur spare time, by taking online surveys!

pinecone-research-big-logo

One of my favorite survey companies is Pinecone Research, who is currently accepting new members to their online research panel. This research firm gives points away at the end of each survey, which have a cashout value of $3.00, which can be transferred to an existing PayPal account,  to a pre-paid card, a mailed paper check, which you can set aside to be directed to your savings account!   The average survey takes 20 minutes, so one could realistically complete 3 online surveys in an hour, and have generated $9.00, and though is not a great sum of money, the earned survey funds could potentially add up to a $36.00 a month, or $420.00 savings annually, if 3 surveys are taken weekly. based on qualification and availability.

How to start with Pinecone

1) Visit Pinecone Research.

2) Fill out a short questionnaire.

3) If you qualify, check your email, follow the link, and sign in.

4) Finish the registration process by answering a few more questions (should take less than five minutes, for most).

As well, Pinecone Research is rated #2 on surveypolice.com and has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Here’s to saving!

Hello again, savvy savers! I wanted to end my weekly posts by bring the week to a close with a post about the reflections on this past week.

The highs for the week:

  • Losing two pounds.
  • My chrysanthemums are being to bloom; I planted them last season in a candy corn color blocking pattern, and am psyched to see them this Autumn!
  • Trying to expand my family!
  • The ongoing re-purposing of two rooms in my home, and the beginning of my chalk painting adventures.

  • Using homeopathic pest remedies on my pets, helping them to stay healthy!
  • Falling back in love with several little things about my husband; the color of his eyes, his humor, his kindness.
  • Receiving words of encouragement from a new-found online friend, Sarah; I will be writing her back this evening as such!
  • Being a co-host for the Merry Monday Linky Party!

My lows for the week:

  • General dis-contentedness.
  • My husband returning to his educator position this week; I know his absence will allow me to get back into a routine with my family, but we will miss him just the same!
  • Diet plateau!
  • Having to start a new coupon clipping method; post to follow!
  • Out pet cat. Shadow, spraying my kitchen window, twice this week over anxiety issues (two strays have come into our neighborhood), and having to find methods to combat the mess and prevent further issues; there will be a DIY pet-post this week explaining more!

  • Finish all of my work-related projects ahead of time this week, in the evening, to free up my days more, by7 at least 1 hour.
  • Start writing love letters for my husband, an educator, so when he starts classes back-up next month, he will have one daily with his lunch.
  • get dressed and wear makeup daily, even when not working.
  • Clean out my coupon binder, and start moving to my new method for organizing coupons and blog/videotape my progress for the blog.
  • Sleep eight hours a night.
  • TTC; take vitamins, continue with yoga, etc.

Goal for the Season ahead:

I would love to find several new reader, blogger, or otherwise friends online. I live in a very small community, and often conversation dealing with topics outside of service, children, and the weather is at a premium. I would love to met others, from various walks of life, that wish to discuss, post, and grow in sisterhood, online. If anyone is looking for a new friend, I’m your gal!

What are your goals for the week, I’d love to hear them below in a comment!

Happy Sunday!

Making More Out Of Monday Meals: Homemade French Salad Dressing!

DSCN0256

Good afternoon, savvy savers! So, today I want you all to remember the not so distant past, the days when the height of sophisticated family dining was going out to the Sizzler or Ponderosa! How I remember those days! So may aisles, so many choices, only one plate! For me, my first stop was always the salad bar, and my topping of choice, the Orange Stuff! That’s right, the old school Orange French Dressing; the tangy sweetness of this topping always brought a smile to my face! But why let the fun end with adulthood? So, for this edition of Making More Out of Monday Meals, I’ll be posting my recipe for homemade Orange French Dressing!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1 tablespoon celery seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring

Directions:

  1. In a one quart jar, combine sugar, ketchup, oil, garlic, vinegar, hot sauce, celery seed, and liquid smoke.
  2. Cover and shake well.
  3. Refrigerate until serving.
  4. This recipe makes 1 quart dressing; I save mine in a mason jar, secured, and stored in the refrigerator up to three months!
  5. Enjoy!
