Today’s Project: My Valentine’s Day Front Porch Reveal!

valentine's day porch reveal 1

Hello again, savvy savers! I am so excited to share with all you my Valentine’s Day Porch Reveal! One of my favorite parts of our home is the fun porch, and I have been more than excited to decorate it seasonally!  As my family is back at school for the spring semester, its time to got life back into a normal routine, and part of that for me is porch decor! So, when I was asked to be apart of the Spring Craft Blog Hop, I totally jumped all over it!

Valentine's day front porch reveal 2

A few months ago I found this awesome red chair in a recess of our basement, and with the help of a can of School House Red spray paint, I had a new porch stand!  Please note, I didn’t bother making sure I got perfect coverage on either coats, because I knew I was going to do some sanding and wanted a lot of layers to show through. To finish it I sprayed it with a Polyurethane to finish up my colored layers.

And, although the chair was cute by itself, I knew I wanted to use several new finds I picked up after the holidays in town to use in conjunction with a few Dollar Tree crafts I made from last year.

For this project I used the following materials:

  • 1 Rattan Wreath Form, $1.00 from the Dollar Tree.
  • 2 Wreath Stands (on hand, but purchased from JoAnn Fabric’s, with coupon, for $5.99 in 2012).
  • 2 Mini Grapevine Wreaths JoAnn Fabrics $0.59 each with app coupon savings.
  • 2 packs covered hearts from the Dollar Tree, $0.25 each (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • 2 packs foam letters from the Dollar Tree, $0.25 each (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • 2 Valentine’s Day Ribbon Spools, $0.10 at Walmart (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014)
  • 2 Red lanterns from CVS Pharmacy (purchased after the Christmas holidays in 2014, used Quarterly ExtraCare Bucks, and paid nothing out of pocket).
  • 1 Burlap Sign, JoAnn Fabrics $1.89 (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • Hot Glue Sticks (on hand).
  • Red Spray Paint (on hand).
  • Polyurethane (on hand).
  • Chair (on hand).
  • Hanging Heart Decoration, JoAnn Fabrics $0.89 (picked up after the Valentine’s Day holiday in 2014).
  • Door Mat, Amazon (used Amazon Gift Card, earned from survey points for purchase).

Total Cost: $6.16

I loved putting this porch together, and with the use of three simple wreaths, a hanging heart and banner, as well as vintage chair and lantern pair, really makes this porch pop! I also love the use of my new door mat. The door mat reads, “Ask not for whom the dog barks, it barks for thee.” This is a joke for my UPS driver, who always asks, whom my pups, a Westie, Shih-Tzu, and Great Pyrenees are barking at, and now, there’s no question…pun intended!

I just love how simple, clean, and inexpensive this project was. With the cleaner lines and empty spaces spring holidays give us, its almost a breath of fresh air! I tend to decorate my porch for most holidays, and my inspiration, my Uncle Danny, who himself was a Valentine’s Day baby, always reminded me to “put love out in the world,” and though he is no longer with us, I hope my porch is representative of his great words. Love begets love.

So, seriously guys, how fun did this turn out?  I am so beyond happy with it! I am so happy with how my porch turned out!

Be sure to stay turned for next few weeks, to see my bedroom and back patio reveals, and new Mardi Gras crafts (inspired by my husband a Who Dat/ True Dat and NOLA fan), too!

Here’s to creating on a budget,

Battle-Of-The-Bulge, Budget Style: Free Online Yoga Classes!

yoga-304635_640

Hello again, savvy savers!  Today I am 32 years young, I am 5’6”, and weigh 196 lbs; I am down one pound since last week. I walk my dogs but beyond this am not terribly active. My lifestyle causes sedentary behaviors; I work-from-home, blog, run two internet businesses, and perform advocacy work online as well. I am an internet-based excuser! Today this changes! Spring has sprung, and so shall I! I have taken up yoga, and have started working out with a pedometer on as well! For this weeks Battle-of-the-Bulge, Buget Style post, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite ways to exercise online, for free!

You may ask, why Yoga? Well here are a few reasons I love Yoga:

  • Increased flexibility.
  • Increased muscle tone.
  • Improved overall personal energy.
  • The maintenance of a balanced metabolism.
  • Weight reduction.
  • Consistent cardiac health.
  • Improved athletic performance.
  • Protection from injury.

I often visit the site DoYogaWithMe, where I am able to find yoga classes, ranging in length, purpose, and intensity, for free, but also follow along several workout community forums where I can speak openly and candidly with others in my situation, those trying to work through our personal issues surrounding our body image and weight.

Times of the month when I chose to look up a Yoga routine:

  • When its too cold or wet outside.
  • When I feel stressed.
  • When I feel run down or exhausted.
  • When I need personal reflection.
  • When I seek peace and tranquility before a long week.
  • To maintain a sense of calm this holiday season.

There are so many benefits that can come from even a quick 30-minute yoga session, that I make time for 1-2 sessions, online in my spare time, each week. This is time set aside for my own betterment, and as a result, I am a better person, a more rational useful woman to my family, and a better blogger for my readers! I keep a mat in several rooms of my home, to ensure that I remain excuse-free in my Battle-of-the-Bulge, and knowing that I am just a few minutes away from relaxation and peace of mind, is just an awesome feeling!

I would encourage you all to try out this site for yourself as well!

Here’s to betterment,

5 Stockpiling Pitfalls You Should Avoid This Year

Canadian-Stockpile

Good morning, savvy savers! This past weekend has found me spending a lot of time both cleaning out and re-organizing my stockpile for the year ahead. From sorting boxes and bins to checking expiration dates, this weekend was incredibly busy. So in the spirit of stockpiling, for this weeks Savings On The Go, With A Cup of Joe, I wanted to post about the 5 Stockpiling Pitfalls You Should Avoid In 2015!

I have to admit, I’m a definite stockpiler with clutter tendencies! The problem is you don’t realize you have this issue until the stockpile is well established and taking over multiple places in your home. I started off with a small shelf about three and a half feet long, but now I have a pantry, a set of five shelves, designated basement space, built-in cabinets, two refrigerators, and a deep freezer! This is in addition to the personal hygiene items are hiding in the bathroom cabinets.

You may think that stockpiling is 100% beneficial because of the money you’ve saved, but this is only until you find yourself drowning in groceries and perishable items!

Here are a few tips to keep these pitfalls under control:

  1. Not Having A Stockpile Limit: Your stockpile is out of control when it exceeds your storage space, period.  If your stockpile is getting out of control, simply redesign your storage space. I looked at my available storage space and made a vow not to exceed my limits again. If you have a small space to work with for your stockpile, limit your goods by checking expiration dates, and anything that is set to expire in the next season, donate to a local charity, food pantry, or women’s shelter in your area.
  2. Don’t Keep Items Past Their Expiration Date: Keeping your stockpile clear of expired foods will save space, money, and prevent you from eating stale, untasty foods. To prevent this, simply create a spread sheet or clipboard chart, and whenever you purchase a vast quantity of goods, write down their dates, and check your sheet seasonally. Also, be sure to rotate goods quarterly so you are consuming or utilizing set-to-expire goods sooner than later—this will also allow you to evaluate what you have, and how much you’re actually using, before you go out and buy more in-store.
  3. Don’t Stockpile Goods You Won’t Use/Donate: Items being thrown away is always equivalent to throwing cash down the drain. To prevent this, simply remember that all sales are cyclical and are guaranteed to rear their heads again within 3-4 months time. Also, when you are able to score freebies with deals, rebates, and coupons in-store, consider only purchasing goods you will be able to use with 12 months, or will donate within 6 months.
  4. Weatherize Your Stockpile: One of the pitfalls of stockpiling is the location of your storage. Certain foods have to be stored in specific temperatures or not exposed to excessive heat. Not storing items at the proper temperature can cause food to expire more quickly and go to waste. A rule of thumbs, foods that are susceptible to insects or heat, such as most baked supplies can be bagged and frozen. Also, please click here to read my post on which goods from you stockpile can be winterized this season, too!
  5. Give Your Stockpile A Safety Inspection: The most important thing to remember, stockpiles serve families, and should be safely stored for all members of your family, human and fur-babies alike. If the stockpile is stacked so high that items could fall and hit you on the head—it’s not safe. If your stockpile blocks a path you would need to exit in case of a fire—it’s a fire hazard. If you have flammable products near a fireplace or gas stove—you guessed it, a hazard! Organize goods in a safe, usable, functional manner.

I hope these tips will help you keep your stockpile organized, usable, safe, and secure! And if you have any stockpile tips, I’d love to hear about them in a comment below!

My 12 Goals for 2015

GoalsIn2015

Hello again, savvy savers! After bombing at half of my 2014 goals (post to come), I have decided to revamp my goals for this year. I went back to the proverbial drawing board to simplify my new yearly goals, in order to make each goal more of a soul-searching, learning-able experience. For the past two weeks, I have been contemplating these goals which will be outlined below. This year, unlike previous years, I wrote out a rough draft of my goals and then went over them with husband, Daniel, re-tweaked, tweaked, and then tweaked again.

I’m very excited about these goals for 2015! Each goal is challenging, yet realistic, and at the end of each season have been designed to leave me motivated, in lieu of tired and regretful.  I am posting my goals to my site, both as a way to inspire others, but to keep myself more accountable this go around.

So, here are my 12 Goals for 2015:

DIY Organic Grapefruit Counter Top Cleaner!

1221-624x499

Good morning, savvy savers! Happy New Year! So this past week at my home, albeit low-key, have been jammed packed with DIY projects and freezer cooking sessions! With all that cooking, comes a whole lot of cleaning, and for me that means whipping out my commercial for keeping my counter tops cleaned, Method Grapefruit Spray! That spray rocks!

As much as I love the cleaner, I am also looking to further cut my bankbook strings in 2015, so I decided to try a DIY version this year! With that said, for the past few days I have been using apps savings from Snap by Groupon, to save on Scarlet Grapefruits at my local Sam’s Club (shopping scenarios to come in the next few days), and instead of composting the Grapefruit peels, I started the first steps to making Homemade Grapefruit Counter top Cleaner!

With the outrageous cost of commercial glass cleaners, I created an organic, non-toxic, child and pet-safe all purpose cleaner which can be for under $5.00 for a years worth of cleaner! As the average cost of a bottle of store-bought orange cleaner is 3.89, and I use a bottle of spray a month, that’s a savings of $48.68 a year! Here’s how to make this!

unnamed (1)

Ingredients:

  • 1 Clean, dried mason jar
  • The peels of 3 grapefruits
  • 2 Cups Distilled, white vinegar
  • 10 drops Essential Grapefruit Oil
  • 1 Empty Bottle
  • 1 Funnel
  • 1 Plastic Bowl
  • 1 Sifter

Instructions:

  1. Obtain a clean mason jar, and fill it with 16 ounces, 2 cups, of distilled white vinegar.
  2. Place the peel of three grapefruits in the mason jar with the vinegar.
  3. Add the 10 drops of essential oil to the top of the jar.
  4. Secure the cap and ring on the mason jar.
  5. Store the jar in a cool, dry place for 14 days; I have stored the jars in both my pantry and garage without issues.
  6. On the 15th day, open the jar and strain the contents into a sifter, over a plastic bowl.
  7. Return the solution to the mason jar with a funnel; label your jar as cleaning concentrate.
  8. Open a spray bottle and add 1/4 cup of the solution, 2 ounces, to 5 cups water.
  9. Seal the bottle and shake gently.
  10. Use in conjunction with newspaper to clean most glass surfaces, including counters.

This is an awesome cleaner! I hope you will think so, too!

Enjoy the clean!

10 Things To Not Pay For In 2015!

wedndsday

Hello again, savvy savers! If you are anything like me, than you are always looking for extra ways to widdle down your family budget. I myself am always looking for the next steal-of-a-deal out there, and sometimes I get so bogged down by looking for the best deals that I forget to keep my eyes peeled for the stuff out there that’s completely free. Fear not–that stuff still exists, and there is a lot of it! So for this weeks Wednesday Ways To Save, here is your ultimate guide to the top 10 things in 2015 that you should be getting for free.

  1. Kids eat free: As the average American family has three children, going out can be a drain on the wallet; this is also the reason so many financial gurus, such as Dave Ramsey, advise against going out. Thankfully, there are about 78 restaurants that offer nights where kids can eat completely free! I have complied a list, here, where kids eat free with any adult purchase. So, if you take into consideration the cost of two cheaper adult options, with water as a drink, free meals for the kiddos, and gratuity, than its often cheaper to eat out than to cook at home for higher ticket meal items such as ribs, steak, seafood, and buffets.
  2.  Shipping: Many of the best deals don’t require you even stepping foot inside a store, and the cost of shipping should not be a deal breaker this year for you. Before you place an order be sure to check sites such as RetailMeNot, get a 30-day pass from ShopRunner, or call your stores customer service line, which usually will give you free ship codes for your trouble!
  3.  Free access to warehouse clubs: Warehouse clubs like Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s all make you pay to shop at their locations, and often times the memberships are well worth the investment; especially if you throw a Living Social or Groupon membership deal into the mix. However, anyone can shop at these warehouses for free simply by requesting a day pass at the customer service desk! Please note that as you are not a member, you will be required to load the funds you will pay to a gift card that is specific to the store you’re shopping at; this is also a great tool to keep your budget while shopping in-club! Consider using a portion of tax returns, and a free one-day pass, to attend your local warehouse club, and buy a years worth of meats for freezer cooking meals, upcoming holidays, and the like!
  4. Amazon Prime: Everyone can get a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, so everyone should be taking advantage of it! Sign up for your free Amazon Prime trial, here!
  5. Free eBooks and audiobooks:  More and more eBooks are becoming free. Audible.com offers one free audiobook and a free 30-day trial of their service for first-time users. You can also access a ton of free audiobooks on Librivox. Also checkout this post for 101 free Amazon e-books, here!
  6. Free gift cards: There are so many ways to earn free gift cards, so why not take advantage of all of these ways to get them? Applications like Ibotta, Snap by Groupon, and Checkout51, will all allow you to earn gift cards just for uploading your receipts. You can also earn gift cards easily with Bing. You can also earn points for cards by taking online surveys, using Swagbucks, Viggle, ExpoTv, Recyclebank, or Crowdtap, too!
  7. Free video-streaming: Last year I decided to cut the cable and it’s been such a great decision, as I’ve been able to save my family $1,344.00; you can read about this journey, here. If you’re still unsure about whether this should be your next move or not—then you should give it a try for free! You can do a trial of video-streaming services for free like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime Instant Video. In fact, I actually prefer streaming, can customize my shows, and not expose my family to unnecessary commercials! I also use savings from iBotta and Checkout51, by way of paypal account earnings, to pay for my subscriptions monthly, too!
  8. Free magazine subscriptions: I never pay for magazines, with the exception of All You, which I purchase through offers listed when subscribing to free magazines! Be sure to check out my Free Magazine Section, here!
  9. Free photography sessions: Need to send photos to the grandparents of your newborn baby? Getting married this Spring? Photography can be so expensive, but you don’t have to pay to keep those memories. You can search Craigslist, local Facebook groups, or check your local college and university’s arts department for photographers who need to build a portfolio. For smaller engagements where you will be taking the photos yourself, checkout Groovebook for 100 free prints with the code, LADYGROOVE!
  10. Personal hygiene items: If you follow many of my daily deal and weekend drugstore shopping scenario posts, you know that there are many personal care items that can be scored for free! Just as a reminder—oral care, travel size items, glucose meters, printer paper and other personal items can be completely free.

So, be sure to join me this year and vow to not spend unnecessary funds this year on the above mentioned items! Your pocketbook will be happier, your stockpile stocked, and your home running smoother than ever before!

Here’s to saving,
