Save $300.00 A Year By Unplugging Your Power Strips Nightly!

Hello again, savvy savers! If your home is anything like mine, you have a myriad of electronic devices in every room of your house. Two years ago, when moving into a larger home I started to notice my electrical bills were skyrocketing! Upon calling my local electrical company, I was told to self-evaluate my home for “phantom drainers,” or electronic equipment that draws a continual supply of power when they’re plugged in but turned off; this causes a vampire drain of power and spikes in your consumption rates!

Here area few tips:

  • I began to try and find ways to shave dollars and cents off of my bill, which went from $110.00 a month to $190.00 this past summer, even under incremental billing implemented. What trick did I come up with? Power Strip with Switches.
  • You can use a power strip with on/off switches to plug in your appliances. An example, I have a power strip in my living room, where my TV, DVD player, game system and sound system are all plugged into. I have another power strip in my office, where my computer, printer, paper shredder, lamp and phone charger are plugged in.
  • I invested in ENERGY STAR® power strips because, according to the Standby Power Data Center, a website from DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), which aids the general public to identify low standby power products, pulling plugs at night, via the unplugging of power strips, can help save the average homeowner 5-10% off residential energy use rates, whereas the average user would save $100 per year. In three months time, I have saved $48.10 off of my electrical bill.
  • You can realistically save upwards of $1.05 a day, and a savings of $328.25 yearly simply by unplugging power strips!

That’s an amazing savings! Before you go to bed, unplug your power strips! you’ll sleep better knowing all of the green savings you’ve generated!

Why I Keep My Counters Cleared Off!

Hello again, savvy savers! For today’s Monday Deep Cleaning Post, I wanted to share the single biggest way I have found to keep my home clean, and that is by keep my kitchen counter tops completely cleared off! Why keep the counters empty? The kitchen is the heartbeat of our home, but when our kitchen counters are messy and cluttered, my mood, home, and family dynamic seems to feel stressed and overwhelmed, too! I truly believe, a clean kitchen is a happy and productive place to be! 

So, you may be asking, is it incontinent to not have small appliances, crocks, tools, and towels in arms reach on the counters? No, in fact I truly have not missed having my items out. The reason I decided to clear my counter tops off was that I simply felt I did not use three-quarters of the items on my counters! Let’s say for 8 hours of the day, you utilize those items for about 5 minutes, or less? So, this ultimately means that we all leave appliances plugged into sockets, for 7 hours and 45 minutes, causing not only unnecessary phantom power sources, but these same power drainers are simultaneously taking up valuable space on your counters.

Couple this with the idea that items placed in cabinets are cleaner, after all isn’t this why we place dishes in cupboards, to keep grime, grease splatters, dust, and germs off of our dishes? Why keep items on counter tops, when it take a mere 5 seconds to take those items out of the cupboard, and about 10 seconds to put those items away in the cupboard!

Here are a few more reasons to clear off your counter tops:

  1. Clear counters, mean more space, and a kitchen that feels a lot bigger than it really is.
  2. It is much easier to cook from scratch and prepare three meals plus snacks each day for your family when your counters are clear.
  3. Clear counters creates both the physical and mental space to bake, whip up homemade snacks, and cook nutritious dinners; you create a workshop!
  4. When it’s easier to cook and prepare meals and snacks, we rely less on convenience and processed foods and snacks, and eat out less often; a savings for our wallets and health!
  5. Counter tops that are completely cleared off practically clean themselves; dirty dishes go straight into the dishwasher, staples into the pantry, and then simply sweep floors and wipe down counters!
  6. A clean kitchen is motivation to keep the rest of the house clean and picked up!

And as a bonus, it is a breath of fresh air, to walk into a clean kitchen! I look forward to walking into the kitchen and being able to actually do what I’m supposed to do in there – make a good, home cooked meal food for my family.

Here are a few ways I keep my counter-tops clear:

  • I keep my toaster oven, microwave, tool crock trio, and produce baskets on a small bakers rack.
  • All paper products, wraps, and lunch items are stored in in-cabinet wicker baskets. 
  • Snacks are stored vertically in hanging baskets.
  • I keep a rack above my sink for washing accouterments and my favorite e-Pantry candles! 
  • I keep my small appliances in a bottom cabinet; grill and baking appliances on one shelf, and all others on the bottom shelf. 
  • I place my cutting boards in an upcycled magazine holder, on the side of my pantry.
  • All spices, food, and pantry items stay in the pantry!
  • Extra tools belong on my pullman cart beside my fridge!

Battle Of The Bulge, Budget-Style: Gluten-Free Eating Apps!

Hello again, savvy savers! Today I am starting another new blog series, Battle Of The Bulge, Budget-Style! I will be focusing on ways to live a healthier, more active lifestyle while be able to afford clean, organic, obtainable foods! I believe this series can be worthwhile for many, who like myself, wish to get more in shape, not through crash-dieting but by small attainable lifestyle changes!  All of the changes I propose will be free or affordable, and most meals and plans will contain couponed savings or deals! Fads are fancy, but coupons are a commitment! With that said, here is where I am currently: I have a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. I am looking to lose 60lbs., find affordable non-gym membership options for working out, and change the way I consume food; this includes meals, snacks, and splurges!

Today I am 31 years young, I am 5’6”, and weigh 197 lbs; I am down two pounds since last week. I walk my dogs but beyond this am not terribly active. My lifestyle causes sedentary behaviors; I work-from-home, blog, run two internet businesses, and perform advocacy work online as well. I am an internet-based excuses queen! Today finds my continued yoga, meditation, walking my dogs, using a pedometer, portioning my meals, and now I also measure myself monthly!

So, for this weeks series post I wanted to share three of my favorite diet-friendly apps, and these are the two apps that I use to help control my gluten consumption!

1. ipiit, the Food Ambassador

App features

  • You can shop for gluten-free options by scanning item barcodes in-store, you instantly know whether it has gluten or not.
  • For off-limit items, the app gives you a list of alternate items that are safe to buy.

2. Su-Chef

This free app (for iPhone and iPad) features 25 different menu guides for a variety of special diets (from gf to diabetic, dairy free to vegetarian).

App features

  • The app includes 200,000+ recipes, and stores that offer the items needed for these recipes, and budgets.

These apps help me to make healthier, more budgeted recipes and shopping trips, and as both apps are free, this is a win-win!

Crockpot Spiral-Cut Ham Recipe!

Crockpot Spiral-Cut Ham Recipe!

Good afternoon, savvy savers! With Easter approaching next month, I wanted to share with you my recipe for Crockpot Ham! I shop and purchase my ham at the same time that I purchase my New Year’s Ham, in mid November, and freeze it until needed; this cuts down on my out-of-pocket holiday rush-pricing. As well, the other ingredients you may have on hand, or can be purchased at your local Dollar Tree. I can make this dish for under $15.00, and it serves 12. The above photo was of last year’s ham, after being taken out of the crockpot, and it was awesome! Here’s how I make it:

Ingredients
  1. 1 (6 pound) bone-in country-style spiral cut ham
  2. 30 whole cloves
  3. 3 cups apple juice
  4. 2 cups brown sugar
  5. 1 cup maple syrup
  6. 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  7. 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
  8. 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  9. 2 tablespoons ground cloves
  10. 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  11. 1/2 maraschino cherries
  12. 1 can pineapple rings, with juice.
  13. 1/2 cup dijon mustard
  14. 1 orange’s peel
  15. Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
  1. The night before serving, take 1 cup brown sugar, a dash of salt, pepper, and a half a cup dijon mustard, and make a rub. Using the rub, slather this mixture on the ham, then wrap in saran wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  2. On a baking sheet, place your prepped ham, spiral cut sides up. Under the broiler setting on your stove, bake 25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly on top; the ham should have a slight crust, but not be burnt.
  3. Next, remove the ham from the oven and place it in your crockpot.
  4. Now, taking your spices, vanilla extract, pineapple and apple juice, to make a sauce, and then set to the side.
  5. Next place the pineapple rings on top of the ham, along with the cherries and cloves.
  6. Now carefully put your mixture around the base of the ham, then cook on low for 8 hours.
  7. When the ham is finished, reserve the pineapple, cherries, and closes to the side for garnish on a platter. As well, be sure to strain the mixture from your crockpot, and serve it alongside the ham as an optional glaze and sauce.
  8. Enjoy!
