6 Reasons I Am Thankful For Blogging

allergy-fighting-1-2

This past year, blogging has been a real blessing in my life. There are so many reasons I’m thankful for blogging, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’d like to share some of them with you today.

My Top 6 Reasons I’m Thankful For Blogging:

1. InformationWhile the world wide web is full of amazing information at any moments notice, it’s the true information that we get from fellow bloggers, that truly makes all the difference in the world. Whether it’s tips on budgeting and meal planning or the comradery that comes with knowing you are not the only ones wading through the trenches of motherhood, it’s the advice of fellow bloggers that has helped me in untold ways. The collective wellspring of knowledge these courageous bloggers share with the world each day is truly an amazing thing to behold.

2. RecipesDo you love recipes on Pinterest? Yeah, me too. Any idea where the majority of those amazing meals you’re dying to try come from? That’s right. Bloggers. Tons and tons of bloggers. Bloggers who create recipes. Bloggers who create free meal plans for you. Bloggers who write cookbooks. Bloggers who you rely on at 4 o’clock when you need a last minute side dish you need to bring to a potluck with the ingredients you have in your pantry already. Those bloggers. And they are awesome!

3. NetworkingMaking connections through blogging is an amazing networking experience. I’ve learned this year how many serious, lasting connections can be made for blogging network opportunities. Whether it’s through LinkedIn or a professional blogging Facebook group, what I do in a professional manner in the blogosphere is largely the result of my efforts in networking with others.

4. Being a wife: Being a homemaker and blogging go hand-in-hand in many ways. When it comes to learning to understand how to be an effective homemaker I’ve experienced so much unconditional support. Blogging has empowered me as a better wife and homemaker, plain and simple, and I’m proud to share that.

5. Friendships: Blogging has given me some of the most amazing friends I’ve made in my adult life. People I have never even met sending me love and prayers when I need them, life me up when I’m struggling, and are always willing to lend a hand in helping me to grow my blog and businesses. These are friends I hope to one day sit down across a table from so I can thank them for reminding me that I’m never alone. The communities I have established for myself through blogging are without a doubt one of the things I am most thankful for. My gratefulness abounds.

6. An outlet for change: Ask any writer – writing is cathartic for the soul. Blogging helps me write my way through unwanted stress, emotions, anxiety and is also pretty amazing when you’ve got loads of great things happening, too. My blog helps me express the kind of person I seek to be and the kind of change I wish to see in the world. Blogging lets me know each day that when it comes to the human experience, we are never really alone.

So there you have it, my top six reasons blogging has blessed my life. So friends, I have to ask, in what are reasons you thankful for blogging? I’d love to hear about them below. Enjoy your day!

Top 10 Ways to Save Big This Black Friday

ideas-3

Many of us are sitting on pins and needles with anticipation of this week’s Black Friday shopping season to begin. As our dreams have been filled with the promise of scoring the lowest prices of the year on electronics, everything for a new TV, tablet, or gaming system. While you can score awesome deals on Black Friday, there are still several pitfalls you need to be on the lookout for. Some shoppers will get taken in by so-so prices masquerading as basement bargain deals, while others will miss out on deals due to a lack of research and price-point foresight.

Well, no worries, I’ve got you covered with my 10 Black Friday shopping tips, and here’s how you can best save this coming Friday:

  1. Start early. No longer can you just scope out your Sunday circulars to see which local retailers have the best deals. For each store you are planning to shop, be sure to check out their site online for the most up-to-date pricing and product availability throughout the event.

  2. Look for leaks. Only rookies head out on Black Friday unprepared. Black Friday veterans get ready for shopping by studying the ads—in print and online—the weekend before Thanksgiving. In fact, Black Friday leaks are already started to appear nationally on sites such as theblackfriday.com, as early as mid-September, that let you filter your searches by product category or recipient.

  3. Compare prices. If you spot a great deal at one retailer, be sure to check out some of the comparison sites, such FatWallet and ShopZilla to make sure you can’t score better deals at home or elsewhere. Also check out apps like NexTag.com, that let you scan bar codes to compare prices, get discounts, and score coupons from local retailers. Even Pinterest has price-drop alerts that will monitor items you’ve pinned on certain websites and email you with the price differences when they go on sale.

  4. Loyalty matters. Store loyalty programs often offer sales and promotions to their members first, allowing them to earn rewards on what they buy. So for stores you shop at most, you can go onto the store’s site and sign up for Black Friday shopping alerts about upcoming promotions, coupons, and discounts. It’s never too late to look for loyalty discounts today!

  5. Socialize. The Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of your favorite retailers are a great way to find out about deals and promotions, as stores often reward customers who like and follow them with special alerts to Black Friday discounts. Somes stores also reward customers who sign up for their text promotions as well. So check your phones and feeds for the Black Friday shopping intel in your area.

  6. Charge your phone before you shop. It goes without saying that before you shop, charge your phone. You’ll need your phone in the store to comparison shop. You’ll also need your phone for QR-code scanner reader on the major retailers’ apps, such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart

  7. Create a budget. When shopping Black Friday deals, you need a budget and you need to stick to it. Your Black Friday budget should reflect your allocations for your doorbuster specials and nothing else. As always, plan to use cash.

  8. Know your stores policies. Always know your store’s price-match and return policies. Some stores suspend their price-match guarantees during the Black Friday weekend on certain items, so read the fine print. Check the return and exchange policies for Black Friday sales to make sure that the store won’t charge a restocking fee for any item you bring back after the holiday weekend had ended.

  9. Avoid accessories. You’ve just scored an awesome giant-screen smart TV at an all-time low price. Now, don’t blow your budget by splurging on pricey accessories or extended warranties. If you need batteries, cables, cords, or accessories, check eBay, Amazon, and Newegg first!

  10. Sometimes the cheap runs expensive. Doorbuster specials may bring you great seasonal savings, but they might not offer you the best product for your needs. Thinka ahead. Don’t just consider the bells and whistles of the day but how you will use the TV in the years to come. Is it cable compliant and wifi-ready for Netflix binging? Is this TV energy saving? During your Black Friday shopping don’t be afraid to ask questions about all the electronics you’d like to buy this Friday.

So savvy savers, what are your best Black Friday shopping tips? Be sure to share them with me in the comments section below. Have a wonderful Black Friday!

Tackle Winter Backaches & Colds with Bengay

I have received information and materials from Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc., McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division. The opinions stated are my own. This is a sponsored post. We’ve officially entered the cold and flu season in our home and it’s been circling our family for almost a month. Starting with my husband’s students, then the kiddos and myself, and finally my husband.

bengay1

This past weekend, my husband, while trying to tackle his Thanksgiving break honey-do list, staggered into the house after clearing off our roof and front yard of fall leaves with the dreaded I don’t feel so well look upon his face. I knew this meant only one thing, the debilitating annual fall lawn & leaf man cold, with a backache!

bengay8

Thankfully, I knew I was already prepared for everything my husband needed to start feeling his best again because, as a family, we always tackle winter colds and body aches and pains with Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream. I know to always grab the Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream first as it will help relieves the minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with a simple backache, strains, and the aches and pains brought about by cold and flu symptoms this time of year.

bengay7

But as we all know, having a down and out husband with a backache and a cold can be nothing short of torture. When the grouch monster comes out of your husband, all you want to do is grab the kiddos and get out of dodge, which of course, is never an option. That’s why this year I decided to be proactive and create a cold & flu kit to anticipate symptoms, such as my husband’s cold and backache.

5

Making this kit was super simple as I was able to pick-up everything I needed at my local Target. Everything from the Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream to the Extra Strength TYLENOL®, was located right by the pharmacy counter, in the General Pain Section of the First Aid aisle, along with all your other cold & flu remedies as well.

bengay6

So, here’s how I made my cold, flu, and backache winter survival caddy at home:

What you’ll need:

  • Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream (Temporarily relieves the minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backaches, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains.)
  • Extra Strength TYLENOL® (For aches and pains associated with the flu, headaches, and acts as a temporary fever reducer.)
  • MOTRIN® IB (For sinus symptoms and sinus headaches.)
  • Cough drops
  • Tissues
  • Flushable Anti-bacterial Wipes (For keeping faces clean while sick.)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Thermometer
  • Mentholated Isopropyl Alcohol (Great for easing congestion when applied topically.)
  • Caddy (preferably with a handle)
  • Chalkboard Labels
  • Chaulk maker

Instructions:

  1. Place a chalk label on the front of your Cold & Flu Survival Kit.
  2. Start filling your caddy with the essential supplies listed above.
  3. Store your kit in a cool, dry, and easily accessible place.

bengay7

Isn’t this kit so adorable and functional? Also, you can add a remote control or your cell phone to the caddy, making it always on hand when moving between the couch and your bedroom while sick.

bengay4

Just a few other tips when you tackle winter colds – take Tylenol® at the first signs of sickness, apply Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream every 4-6 hours to reduce backaches, drink peppermint tea with lemon & honey to aid with sore and scratchy throats and tummy troubles, and rub mentholated alcohol on the bottoms of your family’s feet and cover with socks to reduce coughing as well!

bengay2

With the help of our family Cold & Flu wellness kit, my husband was back to his old self quicker than ever and ready to finish tackling his ever expansive honey-do list.

bengay3

So everyone, be sure to stop by your local Target and pick up Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream and everything you need to help you prepare for this year’s cold, flu, and backache season too!

Motivated Moms Planner Review & Giveaway

Please note, though an app affiliate, I was not compensated by Motivated Moms for this review. All opinions are mine alone.

ideas-2

With running two at-home businesses, working on my first novel, running a blog, time spend volunteering pro-bono legal services, aiding my husband to coach his school’s robotics team, being an active member of several community civic and political organizations, hosting local book club meetings, and attending mass regularly, to keeping up with everything involved in the running of a home, a lot falls on my plate to finish each and every day.

While I’m not a super woman by any sense of the imagination, you may wonder how I manage to keep so many plates spinning at the same time? I’m able to accomplish all these tasks by keeping all of my priorities straight, delegating tasks out when needed, relying on family members to pull their fair share when it comes to chores at home, and by utilizing several planners to help keep me on track for success.

This past year I discovered a new planning cornucopia of goodness when I was given the opportunity to review the Motivated Moms iOS app, an app which has helped me stay on top of my daily household routine.

androidapp

mm4

This full year’s app comes standard with a pre-programmed year of chores, broken down daily with a master list of chores and new prescribed and seasonally detailed chores as well. Everything is covered from laundry maintenance to being reminded to clean out my purse from time-to-time. This app is reminiscent of nothing as virtually every home-based maintenance is meticulously listed.

Using the app is as easy as completing a chore, and then once a task is completed, I just touch the check box on my devices screen, where it’s moved to the bottom of my chore list, and listed as a completed task.

mm5

Even as a minimalist, I can become overwhelmed by the demands of my home. Having lived my life the guide of perfectionism, as is typical of only children, I tend to go overboard when it comes to chores and feel a personal sense of failure if I don’t get every task completed on my daily to-do list. With the Motivated Moms iOS app, I receive immediate validation after completing each task on-screen and get the instantaneous gratification that comes with knowing in progressing through my daily chores. This app gives you momentum to get it all done!

I also love that typical homemaking chores, such as the tidying of countertop surfaces and the sweeping of common areas, aren’t the only chores listed. Also included are chores such as exercising, the taking of vitamins, and Bible reading are also included. The Motivated Moms iOS app (also available for Android) keeps me focused on my house cleaning schedule, helping me to take back time in my schedule for more important things like self-care and spending time each day with my family.

mm3

What makes the Motivated Moms iOS app so unique? This app is customizable! Not only can I assign and color code for individual person’s and their chores, I can also add or remove tasks based on the seasonal necessity of our family and home’s day-to-day needs. I can even select how often a custom task should be performed. I recently added blowing fall leaves from our walkways to my husband’s every-other-day chore list. A chore that while needed at present will not be a pressing task in the weeks to come.

I am also able to tailor some of the most perfunctory tasks on the app as well. Since we don’t have the 2nd floor in our home, I hid this task from the chore list and created a new task, cleaning out our home’s essential oil diffusers weekly instead. While pre-programmed tasks can’t be edited, just hiding the original chore and creating a custom task accomplishes the same goal in less time.

Not only can you customize chores for your home, you can also:

  • Add rooms, such as a library, sunroom, den, office, pantry, or study.
  • Freely hide and unhide tasks as your needs change.
  • Add or remove people from chores.
  • E-mail yourself a printable of the day’s lists (available for iOS), and if you have an AirPrint printer, you can print directly from the app.
  • Sync the app between your iOS devices. As everyone in our home is an Apple user this makes finding out your daily chores effortless.

image2017motivatedmomsfullsizebiblecolor-768x994

While I admit to having been always more of a paper-to-pen kind of planner, but I have been blown away by the ease of using the Motivated Moms system, both by their app and their printable planner. But if you don’t want the app and prefer a printed chore planner? Motivated Moms has you covered for that, too. You can get the same planner, with or without assigned daily Bible study reading, in black and white or in color, for only $8.00, when you use promo code SAVE1 at checkout. You will also receive the remainder of 2016 with each purchase for free as well!

mm2

An initial subscription to the Motivated Moms iOS app is $1.99 and includes two months of tasks and server access. You can buy additional months via in-app purchase for 99¢ per month or a year for $7.99, and again denoted above for only $8.00 when you use promo code SAVE1 at checkout for the printable paper version.

In all, this app has proven beneficial to helping me finish my chores and get more done, in terms of my home-based businesses, I plan to keep my subscription current and will be using this system again in 2017.

For more information on Motivated Moms, also be sure to join them on Facebook and Twitter.

Motivated Moms has been gracious enough to give two LadyPrefers2Save readers their very own 1-year subscription to this amazing app. To enter, just leave me a comment and let me know why you are excited to try this app in the new year.

So savvy savers, let me know how you plan to get everything you need to get done at home in the coming year. I’d love to hear all about it below!

Why you need self-care in your life

allergy-fighting-1

You’re overwhelmed at work. You have a ton of projects piling up at home, and your calendar is packed with overdue tasks and responsibilities. To make room for all of this stuff, you skip meals, stop working out, and what shreds of a social life you have seems to be put even further onto the back burner. When we’re stressed, self-care is usually the first thing to go. And that’s when things only seem to get worse.

As indulgent as the phrase self-care may sound, the habit of caring for yourself in an intentional and directional manner, is truly functional to your entire being.

Most of us grew up believing in self-sacrifice. Believing that the more you gave up, the bigger the reward. In high school, I routinely signed up for a debate tournament and speech events that often simultaneously went on during the same weekend. I forced myself to stay up all night preparing. I pushed myself each tournament to the point of exhaustion, going from room to room, from floor to floor, just to receive small academic accolades at the end of each district meet. I believed that by pushing myself to the brink everything would eventually pay off. Of course, the next day and beyond, I was so exhausted I could barely form coherent sentences, especially in school the following week. Mentally and socially this pace caused me to tank.

I know first hand that it’s easy to take the hard work pays off adage too far, to the point that it becomes counterproductive to your overall well-being and success. Your abilities become worn through. Your skills aren’t as sharp. You lose that laser focus. You run yourself into the ground. While you might think you’re working hard, in some ways, you’re not working efficiently at all. It’s easy to neglect taking care of ourselves because when we’re busy and overwhelmed, even a small reprieve feels like a luxury. So actually taking the time to eat lunch, exercise, and hang out with friends? That just feels like slacking.

It’s easy to neglect to care for ourselves when we’re busy and overwhelmed when even a small reprieve feels like a luxury. When taking the time to eat lunch, exercise, and hang out with our own family feels like slacking. But like with all flawed mindsets, backfires are inevitable as self-care actually helps you make progressive strides in life faster than the constant grind.

Take for example these few reasons why self-care should be a necessity in your life:

Self-care prevents burnout: We’ve all been there: you push yourself to the point that you can’t take anymore, causing you to just give up and let go of those important progressions in life. Self-care actually helps you avoid getting to that point initially by reduces the stress that makes you consider throwing in the towel at all. An unstressed mind prepared for battles ahead and does not dwell on past failures.

Self-care gives you perspective: While a small amount of stress can serve the purpose of outward momentum, but after a while serves to do little more than break down the virtue and sanctity of your down your mind and body. Self-care enabled you to care enough about your mental wellbeing to create healthy barriers that allow you to keep stress from taking over your life and your full functionality. Self-care helps you refocus: When I was stuck on a complicated math problem in school, my teacher would suggest walking away and coming back—taking a break, basically. Breaks are the epitome of

Self-care refocuses your senses: Self-care enables you with the gift of discernment. It allows you to know that sometimes in life you need to walk away from difficult situations, from difficult people, and from difficult attachments in your life. Self-care lets you know you need a break. It allows you to think your heart and soul, to know when it’s sometimes necessary to come back into a situation refreshed. Breaks are the epitome of self-care and are essential for helping you perform better.

I’ve said all that to say self-care is not a reward. It’s part of a process. A necessary process that sometimes gets mislabeled as rewarding rather than nourishing or enriching. We aren’t rewarding ourselves with lunch or even a trip to the bathroom, though, we are providing basic ourselves with the basic necessities of life.

While rewards can motivate us to work hard, they are not the light at the end of the tunnel. Self-care is.

When you care for yourself first you give yourself back the ability to strive and not just function. It’s better to care for yourself if even for a few minutes a day than later undergoing the arduous, messy, and altogether uncomfortable task of talking oursleves back in the from the ledge.

It’s vital that you make time for yourself in your daily routine. Even if it’s just a fresh change of clothes or a long stint in the shower. You need the respite.

Self-care also requires accountability. Consider letting those closest to you know you need help and be humble enough to put your ego aside and accept the help they offer. If you need help staying focused on fitness, consider teaming up with a friend and working out together or try an app like Sworkit, which generates daily exercise routines based on how much time you have each day. Sometimes you just have to get up and do it.

Self-care also relates to good nutrition. Do you want to eat less sugar? Control your carb intake? Drink more water? Just focus on one area at a time, carefully measuring your progress each day. There is nothing wrong with the occasional indulgence, but food should never be a means to an end when it comes to stress. Changing the way you think about stress will help you change the way you think, relate, and in time, crave foods. Give yourself the gift of hydration over saturation. Give yourself grace.

In the end, self-care if nothing if not the practice of good emotional hygiene, and that’s something we can all get behind.

So tell me, in what ways today will you give yourself the gift of self-care. I’d love to hear about it below!
