How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

Getting outside and enjoying the summer weather every chance we get is a must for our family! We love nothing more than spending the afternoon at our local lake taking in the sights and sounds of our local nature reserve while enjoying a picnic spread. But like most every other activity that involves my family over the past year, our zero-waste lifestyle comes into play. Even while picnicking at the park!

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

Earlier this month, knowing picnic season was just around the corner I stopped by my local Walmart to pick up several must-haves for summer, including Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen Sensitive products. It gives us all the coverage we need to keep us safe from the sun and can easily be found right at Walmart. As its summer, whenever getting out in the sun sunscreen is a must.

This sunscreen for sensitive skin is a must for our family’s summer picnic basket. It has a unique zinc oxide formulation, provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, is paraben-free and fragrance-free, and dermatologist-recommended for over 15 years! As a family, we love Blue Lizard® Sunscreen‘s patented Smart Bottle™ technology, which causes the bottle to change color when exposed to harmful UV sunlight. So we always know when to reapply. Here’s where you can find Blue Lizard® Sunscreen at Walmart:

What’s even better? For savvy savers like us, this month there’s a new iBotta deal for Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen! Currently, when you join iBotta (as well as existing members) and purchase Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen – Sensitive, the 5 oz.-bottle only, you can earn $4.00. Click here for more details! So with this season’s sunscreen in-hand from my local Walmart, I headed home to prep a zero-waste picnic lunch for the afternoon.

What supplies you’ll need for zero-waste picnics this summer:

As you might think, packing a zero-waste picnic is not that different from packing a regular picnic. Because when it comes to packing a zero-waste picnic you are aiming to create as little waste as possible, so you won’t be using disposable products. So you’ll need to skip the plastic disposable products in-store. Think in terms of natural elements such as glass, stainless steel, wood, cloth, fiber, or stone products. Consider purchasing utility reusables, such as Mason jars, which can be used for a myriad of picnic foods such as salads, smoothies, snacks for the kids, and even bbq.

Other useful products include glass brewery bottles and stainless steel products, such as straws, silverware, and serving ware. All items that can be affordably purchased and used for many seasons to come! You’ll also need reusable versions of picnics staples including reusable napkins, picnic blankets, picnic baskets, and wrappings to coverings to keep foods fresh, such as reusable cling wrap. And one of the easiest ways to acquire reusable cling wrap is to make your own! Here’s the why and how.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

Why make Beeswax wraps:

Beeswax wraps are a naturally anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap that will actually hug bowls, cups, plates, and jars with just the right amount of cling. They’re great for wrapping snacks, fruit, veggies, cheese, bread and even bowls, making them perfect for zero-waste picnics! Wraps also cost just under $1.00 to make and will give you hundreds of uses per beeswax wrap. The best part? They’re customizable and make great hostess, teacher appreciation, or holiday gift for friends and family too! Now let’s see just how simple making DIY beeswax wraps at home this summer can be!

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

Ingredients & Equipment you’ll need:

  • Beeswax: You can buy beeswax in bars (which will need to be grated or in pellet form)
  • Jojoba oil
  • 100% cotton fabric. (The thinner the better. I use fat quarters from Walmart for $1.00)
  • Scissors: Sheers to cut your fabric and pinking shears to prevent fraying.
  • Paintbrush
  • Grater (if buying block beeswax)
  • Stainless Steel Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Ruler or Tape Measure
  • Oven
  • Binder clips
  • String
  • Tongs

Instructions:

-Preheat your oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep my home cooler in summer, I use a convection oven to make beeswax wraps.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Next, you’ll need to create a drying station. To do this, I cleared off one of my kitchen baker’s racks, cut and laid out a sheet of parchment paper beneath where the wraps will hang to dry. I then cut strings across the underside of one shelf. Then when ready to use, I hang the wraps by the binder clips.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Now to prep your fabric. You do this by cutting your fabric into the size you need. For this post, I cut mine into 8×8 inch squares.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Next, prep your baking tray by laying parchment paper over the baking sheet. Then place your fabric on top. Remember, parchment paper is reusable. So when done, just pop your sheets into the freezer and the wax will come off leaving you with a like-new sheet of parchment paper.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Next, measure out your beeswax and then sprinkle your beeswax mixture evenly over the top of your fabric and then drizzle your jojoba oil over beeswax pellets as well.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Place sheet in the oven and bake for 6-8 minutes or until the mixture is fully melted.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Next, pull your sheet out of the oven. Then quickly, using the paintbrush, spread the mixture evenly over the fabric, making sure to fully saturate each area, particularly the corners and edges. If any part of the wraps needs further saturation just pop the sheet back into the oven for an additional 1-2 minutes. When the mixture is evenly melted, remove the baking sheet from the oven and lift the sheet with tongs.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

-Finally, hang your sheets with your binder clips on your drying rack station. Allowing each wrap to dry 10 minutes. Keep in mind that it will feel very tacky at first but will cure and dry quickly. And now your wraps are done!

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

A few quick tips:

  • Wraps can be made in any number of sizes and it really just depends on the size and number of sheets you want to make. Here’s how much materials to use for the specific size wrap you need: 8×8 Sheet (2 teaspoons beeswax & 1/2 teaspoon jojoba oil, 11×11 Sheet (2 teaspoons beeswax & 1 teaspoon jojoba oil), & 14×14 Sheet (3 teaspoons beeswax & 2.5 teaspoons jojoba oil).
  • To use each wrap, just place over a bowl or container, wrap around food like cheese, or fold into a snack bag.
  • The warmth from your hands will mold the wrap into the desired shape.
  • Wraps should be washed with cold water, Castille soap, air dried, and stored standing up in cabinets.
  • Since they cannot be washed with hot water, wraps are not suitable for meats for high-moisture foods.
  • After a year, you need to re-wax them in order to keep using them.
  • If you prefer vegan wraps, powdered pine resin can be substituted for beeswax.

How to pack a zero-waste picnic:

When you’re ready to pack your picnic start by collecting all your jars, bottled drink, and reusable materials. I like to place anything that doesn’t need immediate refrigeration in my wicker picnic basket and everything else goes into a reusable insulated bag, along with ice packs. I then pack up my straws, napkins, Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen, DIY essential oil bug spray, and silverware and you’re set for a zero-waste picnic this summer!

Now, if you need a little help knowing what the essentials for zero-waste picnicking are I’ve included an infographic to help you along. Just download it to your favorite device and keep it with you as a zero-waste shopping guide the next time your in-store!

For our last picnic, I packed jarred wedges of cheese, spicy dill tuna salad, gluten-free tortilla chips, olives, frozen cantaloupe (also serves to keep picnic items cooler), baked hummus with queso fresco, and 1-minute microwave jarred chocolate cake for us all to share. I was able to easily cover the hummus with a new beeswax wrap. It was a feast for our little family of three!

We picnicked as a family at our favorite local spot overlooking our local nature reserve’s reservoir lake. It was tranquil and trash-free!

How to pack a zero-waste picnic this summer

While there we remembered to apply Blue Lizard® sunscreen before heading out to the gazebo for the afternoon and then reapplied two hours later to ensure SPF protection was maintained. Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen’s sensitive skin formula is perfect for our whole family, even my husband, whose fair skin has seen its share of sunburns over the years. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s our go-to for summer activities, including picnicking by the lake!

Now that you’ve seen how easy prepping for a zero-waste picnic can be, I encourage you to consider making your own beeswax wraps for your perfect zero-waste picnic this summer. Then be sure to check out Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen’s sensitive skin formula this month at your local Walmart. Remember, this month you can earn $4.00 when you purchase Blue Lizard® Australian Sunscreen – Sensitive, 5 oz. bottle, at Walmart from the iBotta savings app!

So friends, will you be taking in a picnic as part of your adventures this summer? And how will you make these adventures more zero-waste? I’d love to hear about them below!

Meal Plan Monday (6/12/17-6/19/17)

Happy Monday, everyone! This week is starting off to another sunny, and finally, chilly start here in Dixie. Well friends, what a weekend our nation has had! While my opinions on the matter are obviously not needed in a Meal Plan Monday post, it’s still worth noting that no matter what changes our nation will face in the days to come, there are still things that we can all do as families to help offset these changes, including meal planning and easy, simple shopping and recipe creation. I’m a firm believer that when things change I cling to consistency, especially my weekly meal plans!

This week’s menu again reflects our need to eat down our food stockpile. As we are having to consume everything we have on-hand first, we did not purchase anything new this week with the exception of fresh salad greens, cilantro, coconut oil, and organic nut milk. So in lieu of making individual meals, we are again using up pre-made freezer meals and frozen blanched veggies this week, which is enough to feed a family of three. Why every cat needs a pet hammock

Disclosure: This post was made possible by BrandBacker.com and Pet Magasin. I was compensated for my participation in this campaign, but all opinions are 100% mine. Read full Disclosure Policy here. Thank you.

Why every cat needs a pet hammock
If you’re anything like me, there are few things more reminiscent of summer that swinging in a hammock outdoors. In fact, it’s one of my all-time favorite activities. I love to lay out on my patio, between Magnolia trees in my backyard, on the beach, and even at my local the lake–I can do pretty much most things in a hammock. From reading to remotely working on my laptop, life is best lived in a hammock. I also love the idea of giving the gift of relaxation to my other family members as well. My furry family, particularly my cats. So when I was sent this cat hammock bed free of charge to facilitate this post, I gladly jumped at the opportunity.

As any pet owner will tell you, there’s a ton of products on the market for pets. Even when shopping for cat hammocks, there is a lot to consider. How much room do you have? How skittish is your cat at trying new things? Will your cat be open to using this product indoors or outside? How much do you want to spend on your hammock? All questions considered, I’m glad to have gone with the luxury line of cat hammocks from Pet Magasin.

Pet Magasin is a company known for developing, sourcing, and testing quality pet products. They take pride in creating safe in-home furniture for pets and their owners at an always great value and price. They also source their materials from all over the world, including Japanese steel, U.S.-grown cattle hides, and organic Canadian catnip.

Why every cat needs a pet hammock

In terms of this product, Pet Magasin Cat Hammocks feature durable maple stands and high-quality fabrics, all at affordable price point options. This hammock may be made for cats, but it’s truly a finely crafted piece. The Pet Magasin Pet Hammock’s solid maple frame is free from cheap particle board, plywood, or plastics. The wood is also generously protected with a clear top coat, which allows its natural beauty to shine.

Why every cat needs a pet hammock

Other materials included are sturdy chains and hardware. All made of durable of polished steel. Also included are soft, washable, easy-to-maintain microfiber hammock cover and blanket! A blanket that can be put over the hammock bed, or if your cats are as spoiled as mine, can be used to tuck your cats them in instead!

Why every cat needs a pet hammock

These hammocks are also super simple to assemble. In under fifteen minutes you’ll have your hammock fully assembled and ready for cat’s next nap! I must confess, this was a major bonus for me. After all, what’s worse than buying and assembling furniture for your fuzzy friends only to have your pet not want to use it?

I also loved that this hammock is designed for even the timidest of cats in mind.  After assembling the hammock, I put some of my cat Darcy’s favorite treats on the hammock and then allowed him time alone with the hammock to get used to its design. In typical cat fashion, as soon as I laid the assembled hammock on the floor Darcy eagerly inspected the hammock and laid claim to his favorite new nook of the house!

Later, after noticing the hammock was a bit wobbly and Darcy seemed nervous on the hammock, I remedied this by re-tied the stabilizing strings on each side of the hammock tighter together. This way the hammock felt more stable to Darcy and would encourage his to utilize the hammock moving forward. This seemed to work out well, as a couple of hours later both my kitten and Chihuahua, Harley, started exploring the fabric and taking turns laying on the hammock itself. In fact, both laid in the hammock the next evening for hours at a time each. Totally relaxed. totally comfortable. Making me totally pleased!

Why every cat needs a pet hammock

Now both my fuzzies love this Pet Magasin Hammock. As of yesterday, we’ve placed the hammock in our sunroom and it’s been the go-to spot for our pets since. Everyone knows that taking naps is a cat’s favorite pastime. Now with the Pet Magasin cat hammock, my pets will be able to indulge in the fine art of sleeping in true southern style.

Why every cat needs a pet hammock

This luxury cat hammock is currently on sale on Amazon and on PetMagasin.com for under $30.00. What’s even sweeter? Pet Magasin is giving my readers an additional 30% savings when you use promotional code 5F2WSQO4 on either site this season.

Friends, I encourage you to visit their website to find out more information about this pet product, as well as many other high-quality items they currently offer as well for your small pets and cats at home this summer! So now I have to ask, what furniture do you have for your own pets at home? I’d love to hear about them below!

How to make Homemade Miracle Grow

How to make Homemade Miracle Grow

Miracle. That’s the best way I know how to describe gardening. And if you’re anything like me, the moment the winter subsides I can’t wait to start gardening! I love filling my yard each warm-weather season with beautiful plants, shrubs, trees, and start cultivating an immaculately groomed lawn. But as we also know, even the best of gardeners need a little help now and then to keep their yards their beautiful best. Which is why when I need to give my plants a big boost of natural TLC, my go to is my own organic Homemade Miracle Grow.

There are lots of reasons that you may want to make your own fertilizer. For me, I wanted to prevent unnecessary chemicals from being added to my yard each season as part of my pledge to run a more minimalist, zero-waste home. I’ve often felt the fertilizer industry added an egregious amount of toxins to their products and I’m not alone.

In fact, in 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Stop sale, use or removal order against Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. & Affiliates for illegal, unregistered and misbranded weed and fertilizer which promoted the sale of products with cancer-causing and endocrine disrupting pesticide ingredients. The EPA also issued a stop-sale order to Scotts Lawn Care Service, for which Scotts subsequently agreed to recall two products from all retail locations across the United States and to set up a process for consumers to safely return any unregistered products they may have purchased and to stop selling and distributing products containing trifluralin, an herbicide that is a known carcinogen and to label its remaining products containing toxins to the public.

In 2010, Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. pleaded guilty to numerous charges of misleading consumers with unapproved labels, falsifying insecticide registrations, including using toxic chemicals in wild bird food, and in 2012 was ordered by the Department of Justice to pay $12.5 million in criminal fines, the largest penalty ever set under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) Civil Case. And in 2014, the EPA released to the public a list of moe than 100 products produced or sold by Scotts Miracle-Gro that violated the federal pesticide laws over the past decade. In addition, numerous other commercial brands contain chlorpyrifos-methyl, an organophosphate insecticide, and neurotoxin that affects humans and wildlife alike. Facts that are simply hard to ignore as both a consumer and ecological advocate.

Then there’s the matter of cost. Many commercial fertilizer products cost in excess of $20.00 per container. While my DIY version will set you back pennies on the dollar instead. A savings of over 98% off retail pricing nationally. Making this DIY version a no-brainer for gardening enthusiasts this season!

How to make Homemade Miracle Grow

Now if you’d like to see how you can make your own all-natural Homemade Miracle Grow for pennies on the dollar, check out my recipe below:

Ingredients:

  • 1 gallon of water
  • 1 tbsp Epsom’s Salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp of Household Ammonia
  • 1 tbsp of powdered milk
  • 1 tbsp of molasses

Directions:

  1. Simply mix all the ingredients together, except the powdered milk in a reusable, sealable, food-safe container (to prevent chemical leaching).
  2. When ready to use, add 1/4 gallon of your Homemade Miracle Grow Blend to a watering pitcher and then add the powdered milk and molasses only when ready to be applied to your garden areas. Stir thoroughly to combine.
  3. Dispose of any unused portions containing powdered milk, to prevent spoilage.
  4. Use this Homemade Miracle grow only once per month.
  5. Safe for gardens, hanging plants, house plants, flower beds, shrubs, and lawns.
  6. Can also be added to hose sprayer attachments or used with a watering can.
  7. You can also mix into the soil around plants in the Spring and Fall each year. The rate should be 1 tablespoon for every 1-2 feet in height of plant. Be sure that you blend into your soil well with each application.

Quick Tip:

Each ingredient in this blend is necessary to ensure proper plant growth and have bee included in my Homemade Miracle Grow for the following reasons:

  • Water: Necessary agent for plant germination, photosynthesis, nutrient transference, and soil transpiration
  • Epsom’s Salt: Epsom salt helps improve flower blooming and enhances a plant’s green color. It can even help plants grow bushier. Epsom salt is made up of hydrated magnesium sulfate (magnesium and sulfur), which is important to healthy plant growth. An added bonus? Slugs hate Epsom’s Salts!
  • Baking soda: Baking soda on plants helps prevent the bloom of fungal spores and minimize diseases such as powdery mildew and other foliar diseases.
  • Ammonia: Ammonia is present in the soil, water, & air. Ammonia also contains Nitrogen, an essential for plant growth and improves fruit and seed production, resulting in a greater yield.
  • Powdered milk: It contains beneficial proteins, vitamin B, and sugars that are good for plants, improving their overall health and crop yields. The microbes that feed on the fertilizer components of milk are also beneficial to the soil. Like us, plants use calcium for growth. Powdered milk also contains phosphorus and potassium, necessary agents for plant growth.
  • Molasses: Molasses is high in calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. It also contains sulfur and a host of micronutrients. Using molasses as fertilizer provides plants with a quick source of energy and encourages the growth of beneficial microorganisms.

So, friends, this is one of my favorite and healthiest ways to keep my garden and yard looking its best each season and I hope you will consider using it too! And if you would like to check out some of my other organic gardening posts, click here.

So now, I have to ask, what are planting this season and what will definitely need to be fertilized in your own yard this year? I’d love to hear about it!
