Why your child’s classroom needs the ClassDojo App

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the back-to-school season! With so much going on to get your little ones ready for the new academic year at hand, from buying supplies to attending open houses, it’s hard to focus on everything you need to know to help your child do their best this coming year. That’s where apps such as ClassDojo come into play.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

ClassDojo is a digital classroom management tool designed to help teachers improve student behavior and communicate more effectively with parents. Using the app, teachers can create trackable classroom goals and behaviors to help keep students on track for success, such as turning in homework, participating in class, or staying on task. Using a smartphone, tablet, or computer, teachers can give or take away points throughout the school day in regards to each assigned goal or task.

Each student’s points can then be displayed via a smart board in-class as well as send electronically to parents daily, weekly, or quarterly as well. Giving parents the ability to see the progress of their student wirelessly.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

Something fun about ClassDojo? Each student receives an avatar. Which can be personalized by student, class, team, school, or project! These avatars are a great tool to get the kids to buy into the personal responsibility teachers and parents hope to see them develop. ClassDojo also presents teachers and parents with the ability to streamline their communication which helps to help identify and moderate behaviors. By offering an easy way for teachers to note behaviors as they happen digitally, this app reduces time away from in-class instruction.

ClassDojo allows teachers to gather more personalized behavior and grading data about individual student and in return, communicate feedback nearly instantaneously to their child’s parent. Which is why the ClassDojo app now used in 90% of all K-8 schools in the U.S. and 180 countries around the world!

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

While some may feel that a public points system doesn’t foster community or promote a positive way for children to feel inside the classroom, I believe that by presenting good behavior as a measurable, tangible incentive it gives children a visual reminder of how they are doing, much like a public behavior chart, and also gives children the ability to self-modify their behavior in a real and lasting way. By attaching names to actions, students can digitally learn better ways to communicate and respond. This also pumps much needed time back into the classroom. While some sensitive children may need extra time to respond to the app, it’s a valuable lesson just the same!

ClassDojo also offers many different ways to use its product, including anonymous avatars and not displaying points at all, depending on the teacher’s needs. As well, ClassDojo is an app that is meant to work hand-in-hand with various districts, parishes, co-ops, and homeschooling code of ethics, to work seamlessly with a teacher’s existing classroom management arsenal.

Something else to consider is how effective ClassDojo can be in regards to time restraints. Imagine the time that can be spent monitoring the behavior of students digitally. While some issues will still need to be addressed in a one-on-one capacity, the ability to use a smart board to display behaviors can be self-correcting if used in a real and lasting manner. Then there is the matter of positive behavioral rewards. While, generally speaking, praise should be delivered immediately in a sincere manner to students, the ability to let parents also onto these same awesome behaviors can continue the praise for positive behavior long after students leave the classroom.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

ClassDojo is also a great way to promote direct communication with parents. Every parent wants to be able to check in on their child’s behavior and progress. And sometimes waiting for 9-week reports just won’t do. So when utilizing ClassDojo parents can get a heads up on behavior when they need to know. ClassDojo helps ensure the parents, students, and the teachers are on the same side when it comes to academic excellence at home, including the use of the Classdojo in-app messengering feature.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

One of the major reasons for ClassDojo’s success is that it utilized mindfulness. Which has been shown that regular mindfulness practice — even just a few minutes per day- improves students’ optimism, reduces stress, and increases students’ ability to feel empathy for others.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

ClassDojo also conducted a national survey that found that only 13% of teachers and parents, including homeschooling parents, reported having a mindfulness practice at their school, while a whopping 70% of those surveyed want to find ways of utilizing mindfulness in their classrooms. Which is why mindfulness is such a key reasons for the app’s success. You can see here ClassDojo brings mindful behavior into classrooms.

ClassDojo gives parents teachable moments and up-to-date information about their students, as well as a functional line of communication directly with teachers without decreasing the amount of face-to-face communication needed outside the classroom. Finally, ClassDojo gives students the ability to shine. Not with food or lost-in-the-moment dollar store prizes but with the child’s ability to excel based on their own merits in their own eyes and in those of their classmates. Who doesn’t enjoy being a hero or the victor who overcame the discourse of the day?

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

As a parent, who wouldn’t want tools that directly connect their parenting to the classroom in an effective and lasting manner? I sure can’t think of anyone who would. Which is why I can see the value of ClassDojo as one of the best tools that can be digitally implemented in classrooms today. Especially as it can be used in a careful, sensitive way that encourages social and emotional learning for students of all learning and behavioral styles.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

I have met numerous teachers, including my husband, that have implemented ClassDojo is truly meaningful ways in their classroom, and continue to use the program because of its ability to streamline excellence in real and lasting ways for students. where they have not used the ranking, nor made it public, but rather used it as a way to track behaviors within the classroom.

The ClassDojo app aims to give students a voice, share moments of praise with parents, and progressively and measurably help to promote a positive in-class culture of sound recognition, up-to-the-minute progress visualization, and gamification of basic classroom behavior management techniques. ClassDojo gives teachers the ability to give students digital high-fives, to reward students with points for a job well done, and give parents immediate feedback on the projects their child worked on in class or behavioral needs.

Why your child's classroom needs the ClassDojo App

While there is no perfect system for in-class behavioral tracking, ClassDojo can be the bridge parents, students, and teachers need to help students perform at their very best! Which is why I’m glad to be partnering with Classdojo to bring you a fun back-to-school giveaway! One lucky winner will receive a ClassDojo package, including 2 Large Print Posters, including the new Mindfulness poster, 3 skills print posters, and a limited edition Mojo Plushie; a retail price of $150.00. The 5 Best Ways to Save Money Buying a Car

The 5 Best Ways to Save Money Buying a Car

Buying a car can be tough. Sometimes the mere thought of visiting an auto dealership can leave your stomach into knots. The process of buying cars can appear intimidating. From the idea of haggling with salespeople or the high price tag that comes with buying a new car. Either way, I’m right there with you. It’s easy for a car buying afternoon to turn from necessity buying to an anxiety-driven event. Even for families like my own who live debt-free!

Whether you’re shopping for a new or used car, buying a car is a humongous purchase and one that’s always made me nervous. When my husband and I needed a new (or as I should say, new to us) car several years ago I was afraid it would cost us too much and I dreaded the entire process as a whole. But with just a bit of planning, research, and a few money-saving tips, I found the negotiation process easier than I ever thought possible. In fact, we were able to save over $5,000 on our new car purchase. Here are the five tips my family used to purchase their last car and how you can also use them to save money on your next car purchase too!

The 5 Best Ways to Save Money Buying a Car

1) Always know your car shopping budget. When we bought our last car we had people tell us to let the salesperson know much we intended to spend on our next vehicle. Folks, let me tell you. This is the last thing you should do. Telling dealers how much you have allotted to spend on your next vehicle gives them a bar to push you to spend. Instead of sharing your budget at the dealership, be sure to keep that information close to the vest and if asked, steer your negotiation away from what you’ll be spending to what sort of deal the salesman is offering. Your budget is what you can spend not what you should spend on your next vehicle. Always be in a position of power when purchasing your next vehicle!

2) Research before you buy. With any major purchase, my family intends to make we spend a great deal of time pricing out, researching, and becoming knowledgeable in what the make and model of vehicle we wanted to buy. In fact, my husband and I spent months researching what we wanted before we set foot on a local car lot. We knew the price we were looking to spend and the size of car we wanted to the tee. We then shopped around at no less than a dozen dealerships over the span of several weeks before we narrowed our possible list of cars before buying. That helped us compare cars and narrow down the options to allow us eventually drive off the lot with a vehicle that cost several thousand less than we initially had invested in buying.

A bonus tip: Make up your mind before heading to the dealership not to buy on your any vehicle on your first trip to the dealership – no matter how good the deal is or how badly you want or need the car. Always give yourself 24 hours to mull over any car buying decision

3) Know the best time to buy. Most people buy cars on a weekend. But this is a mistake. While it can be a pain to carve time out of your busy work week to trudge down to the dealership to test drive or purchase cars, its the best time to do so. Especially on Monday evenings between 6-8 pm, when dealerships employees are looking to make extra sales to boost weekly bonus earning reports that are generally due on Tuesday morning each week. In hopes of getting those last minute paycheck bonuses, salespersons are usually more apt to make deals Monday evenings making it a peak time to buy. Other great times to buy are in late May when offering major discounts on Memorial Day sales, at Halloween for full-size truck savings, early November for great deals on SUV’s, and the overall single greatest day each year for savings at used car dealerships, New Year’s Day. When dealers are trying to offload previous year’s makes and models and consumers will typically find slashed prices throughout the first day of each new year!

4) The delete button is your friend. Did you know that most dealerships offer online quotes and pricing guides? You are generally only a few clicks away from being able to negotiate with dealers from the privacy of your own home. It’s also good to remember that dealers love to make deals against one another. Be sure to keep your paper trail of email offers, cc in each dealer you correspond with, and let them know that you know where the true deals are to be had in town. This also goes for financing at most dealerships. Remember that cash is king and some dealerships will offer cash-only deals, and should you need to finance shop around at local credit unions before heading to the dealership to find the rates and terms that will fit your budget, not the dealerships bottom line. No matter how you intend to pay, remember to be patient with the process. Always be willing to walk away or to delete offers beyond your means.

5) Get savvy about trade-ins. One great way to lower the cost of buying your next vehicle is by using your current vehicle as trade-in capital on your next purchase. While you’re doing trade-in research, investigate cash-back offers on the vehicle you’re planning to purchase. Also, research which dealerships will allow you to stack savings, giving you high trade-in value, rebates on your new car, and well as provide you with tax rebate information as well. I have found that Cars.com is a great resource for learning about your potential trade-in value on your next purchase. Their website has a huge selection of information that will provide you with everything you need to make an informed purchase all around. They provide reviews and essential information about a wide variety of different cars, and can give you an accurate detail of how much your trade-in will be worth too! This can help turn your current ride into new car success!

So those are the five tips my family used to seriously save on our last car purchase and may help you and your family do the same when you purchase your next vehicle too! Now I have to ask, have you tried Cars.com to research potential vehicle purchases? Or what are some of your favorite ways to save money when buying a new car? Have you ever paid for a car in all cash? I’d love to hear all about it below!

Meal Plan Monday (7/31-8/6/17): Dutch Oven Freezer-Session Meals

Meal planning can be hard. Especially during the hustle and bustle of the upcoming back-to-school season. Especially when you are trying to prepare healthy meals for your family at home. So today I want to share a little secret with you. Even though this week is starting off to a sunny, humid, and unseasonably warm start here in Dixie, I’m taking this week to create freezer-ready meals for later this fall during the back-to-school season! And as there’s no better way to start a week off than a well-thought out meal plan I can’t wait to share with you all what we will be having this week why not combine our usual meal prep and planning with an easy-to-make freezer cooking session too!

Also, this week’s menu will again reflect a little bit of a change. For the past six months, we have made a point of eating our freezers down to zero. Now we will be switching gears and making a priority out of eating down our home pantry stockpile. As with last week’s plan, this week’s menu will seek to utilize excessive pantry staples to feed our family of three for one week for a total of $38.91.

As with last week, for the next few weeks, I will be experimenting with themed menus for the last ten weeks of Summer. This week’s theme: Dutch oven dinners. While it may seem contradictory to cook in your dutch oven in Summer, I find it a real cost-effective way to dine this time of year. I use my cast iron dutch oven on my gas grill’s propane side burner. Each dish is cooked on low. I check each dish hourly with a preset timer, and if needed, add vegetable stock to keep ingredients from sticking to my oven.

An added bonus? As my family is away this week, and I’m currently consuming a 28-day meal plan from Personal Trainer Food, I’ll be able to prepare and cook the follow planned meals in my dutch oven and freeze them for quick back-to-school meals later this fall. So for me, the cast iron (I’m aiming for zero-waste cooking, after all) Dutch oven presents easy-to-fix, affordable, low-meal that’s table ready in 1-2 hours, which is a win-win in my book!

Now to turn each meal into a freezer ready meal, I simply cook each meal, allow it to cook for one hour, and then pack the meal into labeled freezer-ready Pyrex lidded baking dishes. I’ll cook all six meals over the course of two days and then I’ll have a week’s worth of meals ready for the fall. This is also a great time to check your freezers and pantries for staples that need to be used up and to organize your pantries too. Now let’s look at this weeks meal plan.

Here’s this weeks freezable meal plan:

Personal Trainer Food: Week 1 Check-In

Please note: I received a 28-day food package from Personal Trainer Foods. All opinions are my own, thank you.

Personal Trainer Food

If you’re anything like me, then you know how hard it can be to lose weight. Compound this with how weight makes you feel. Especially when you are a woman. Which is why a year ago I began a journey to better health this time last year and have thus far lost over 80 pounds in the process. While this has been a great accomplishment, my journey to better health hasn’t been without its fair share of hitches. Namely the weight loss plateau I’ve faced this past season.

When I was selected to try out Personal Trainer Foods, a 28-day weight loss program that focuses on providing continued weight loss success through the consumption of precooked, frozen, no-filler foods without hidden sugars or carbs. Just the type of food program and meal plan strategy I knew I needed to try out to get me past my recent weight loss plateau.

Why I’m trying Personal Trainer Foods:

13840453_10209525480034434_2884478_o

In full disclosure, I want to give you all a few personal details. I currently weigh 221 pounds; I am down 83 pounds from my highest weight of 304 pounds from this time a year ago. I am also a PCOS patient who must maintain a low-testosterone lifestyle. Which means I must maintain a low-sugar diet and a low-impact, low testosterone-inducing workout plan. To accomplish this, I workout from my home gym 3 days each week, for 30 minutes each session. I also walk my dogs twice a day for approximately 30 minutes each walk. I also speed walk each weekend with my husband and daughter for 1 hour at our local lake. This is my body’s current condition and health.

With that said, I am actually excited to share with you that I am starting a new journey for the next 4 Friday’s with Personal Trainer Foods. A documented journey to help me reset my weight loss goals, to push past my weight loss plateau, and get my health back on a new and better track. While this process will not be easy I’m hoping these subsequent posts will help give me a maintain sense of weight loss accountability I dearly need.  Now let’s delve a little more into Personal Trainer Foods!

What I received:

Personal Trainer Food

In each box of Personal Trainer Food, I received 28 days worth of pre-cooked and sorted meal options. Each box was well insulated and packaged in styrofoam, keeping the food frozen at delivery. Something worth noting, each box was huge. Folks, the boxes are ample. You receive quite a bit of food. In fact, I received enough food to fill my small deep freezer 3/4 of the way full!

Personal Trainer Food

Inside each box, there were three separate layers of prepackaged meals; a breakfast layer, a layer of vegetable medleys and mixes, and a layer of meat options.

Personal Trainer Food

On top of all three layers were a package of three sauces to accompany your meals, a garlic butter sauce, a bacon cheese variety, and a sriracha sauce. All three are tasty, especially the sriracha!

Personal Trainer Food

Each box also came with a packet of information, including a sheet of the different ways you can start your meal plan for the month, customer service information, and several promotional offers and coupons as well. You’ll also get a couple documents that include your guidelines to eating other foods, and a simple workout plan that consists of a combination of walking and pushups, that increase as you get further into the program.

When you start the program, you can choose your own food – or go with a quicker customer favorite route and pick out meals based on mix and match suggestions of others users. I chose the pick-your-own-meals path from the provided selections.

The First Week:
One of the warnings you’ll read in your introduction packet, in regards your first week into the program, is how your body will adjust to your sugar intake – or lake thereof. The sugar intake in this diet is almost non-existent. So you will need to adjust your activity accordingly. To accommodate these energy-deprived needs, I allowed myself two cups of black morning coffee or Earl Gray tea.

It was recommended by Personal Trainer Food, I started my meal plan with a fast. Which I completed this past Sunday. I stayed hydrated, and somewhat full, with lots of sparkling water, herbal tea, and bouts of time spent watching my husband enjoy food! As Monday approached, I wasn’t starving and was in a good frame of time to start my 28-day food plan.

Personal Trainer Food

I was also little weary of the fact that I was going to be eating pre-cooked, microwaved frozen food, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food you get from this program. The chicken, for example, is well prepared, and if you didn’t know any better you’d think it was hot off the pan with each meal! I have also enjoyed the ample amounts of vegetables you receive. Especially with a dash of the buttery sauce, you’re provided for a pleasant change of pace!

Something else to consider, your overall food intake. I’m normally a big eater, but knowing that this wasn’t about deprivation but rather smarter eating, which made this food plan easy to maintain as the first week went on. In addition to my meals, I’ve consumed sparkling water, before and after meals, and have helped myself to small snacks of homemade dehydrated carrot and zucchini chips as well. To date, I haven’t truly felt hungry between meals so far. Which for this foodie is a huge thing!

What I like about the program so far:

My favorite part of this program is that it isn’t focused on caloric intake. You don’t need to count calories, just eat until you’re satisfied. Which is something I love! Personal Trainer Food is a new favorite way of helping me to take care of myself.

Personal Trainer Food

An example of a few meals I’ve enjoyed so far have included:

  • Teriyaki Chicken and Norwegian Vegetable Medley
  • Buffalo Ranch Chicken Sticks and Summer Vegetable Medley
  • Zesty Gluten-Free Chicken Strips and Summer Italian Bean Medley
  • Grilled Chicken and Summer Green Beans

As you can see everyone, Personal Trainer Food has been amazing so far. I am also happy to report that this first week I have lost 7 pounds! Amazing to say the least. So that’s how my week has gone. I am happy and can’t wait to see what is to come the next 4 weeks. I’ll  be checking in each Friday to share with you how I’m fairing with this meal plan.  Also, follow me on Instagram as I’ll be sharing my meals daily for the rest of my 28-day program on my IG Stories and how I’m feeling each evening throughout the week.

And if you want to give this program a try, click here and use the Code MOMBLOGGER to save $150.00 off a 28-day program! So folks, now I have to ask, what are your initial impressions of Personal Trainer Foods? I’d love to hear about it below!
