Hello again, savvy savers! Today finds us with a new book review, and this time its the ‘The Plain Choice: A True Story of Choosing to Live An Amish Life’ by Amish foodie and cookbook writer, Sherry Gore.” This book is a must have read this fall season. So, why this book? Well if you are anything like me, that you understand the fascination with the Amish; from their beautiful faceless dolls, to their amazing quilts, to their succulent cheeses and breads, to their amusing carriages, their culture is one of endless fascination. So, to think a person, like the author would choose to live among the Amish was compelling to me. For what many people don’t know is that Sherry Gore wasn’t born Amish. She was born into a modern family, struggles with teenage desc ions, a broken home, and later in life became a Christian and felt called to live an Amish life.
This book reveals why Sherry sought to follow the literal simple dress and a focus on Jesus Christ. Then to her excitement, she discovers that there is a community that would be a good fit for her. They are called Amish and Mennonite, and ‘she realizes she has found her people’.
The plain choice that Sherry made is not for everyone, and Sherry Gore is one of the few people on earth to have successfully joined the Amish from the outside. This memoir is a quick, easy read. This is the type of book a cup of cider and a warm fire could only enhance. This is a community of thoughts, emotions, and feeling between two beautiful covers!
