Good afternoon, savvy savers! Today Finds us with yet another awesome book review, this time The Clean in 14 Detox: The 2-Week Plan to Melt Fat, Kick Cravings, and Increase Your Natural Energy, by Melissa Costello.
The reason that I chose to review this book is because I have become curious to the trend in fruit fasting and detoxification, and see if I could find a simple, practical way to incorporate a detox cleanse into my new health living lifestyle. I chose this book, and program, in particular was the nature of the program. The program for which the book is based relies on a 14-day detox, in lieu of the 30-day cleanse popular with most detoxes.
Moreover, the fact that both the book and program have several well-known endorsements, such as Tony Horton, the Old Spice Man, Jared, the gentleman known for losing weight with Subway, and that the program has known been clinically proven to provide weight-lose results ultimately swayed my decision to not only try the program, but later review the book for my readers as well.
The book itself centers around a vegan, whole foods, and juice-based cleanse that not only flushes the body of toxins, but frees the mind of negative patterns, allowing the entire system to reset itself to a place of balance. The author, Missy Costello pulls no punches with her readers. She explains that the key to kickstarting your overall health is to eliminate the excess CRAP in your diet; an acronym for Caffeine, Refined Sugars, Alcohol, Processed Foods. The author also explains that the desire to fill our bodies with these chemicals is due to our own self-loathing desires to SAP ourselves, by way of Sabotaging Addictive Patterns. Costello encourages readers to make the commitment to detox, teaches readers how to prep their minds and kitchens for success, and shares practical tips to make it through the first three days without cravings or withdrawals.
The cleanse outlined in the book, eradicates the need for self-deprivation, through daily, prep-planned, easy-to-afford, mix and match meal plans; all of which as gorgeously illustrated within the text. The interesting part of this detox is that it includes actual food, and not just juicing. This idea alone is worth the price of the book for me, as I do not like the idea of starving my body, in any form.
Other key aspects of the detox include ways to build-up your immune system through specific vegetable and fruit dishes, to stave off allergies and digestive issues with fruit-based desserts, and even ways to prevent migraines and bloating with natural diet options.
The author also speaks in length, to the idea that any detox will require time for your body to adjust to the change in received food and fuel; as it is explained, you may experience some uncomfortable feelings at the beginning as your body detoxes and changes, but the result of amazing health and vitality in the long-term is what to keep in sight. The reiteration of a lifestyle change, verses a diet is an idea I am already trying to implement into my life, and a point in the book I appreciated seeing as well.
Also note, that as this is a detox, any reader should not that this is not a quick-fix diet or a magic pill. If that is what you are hoping for, then this program is not for you, and you might want to pass this book along to someone who is truly committed to changing their health for good.
If you are an unhealthy eater and have never done a cleanse before, or don’t know where to start, this book is an excellent starting point for summer diets, spring detoxing, and those looking to build-up their systems depleted from seasonal allergies and sinus issues.
Although weight loss is a fantastic benefit of this cleanse, the books main selling point is its blatant attempt to refocus the attention of readers towards a lifestyle change, a gradual re-entry of processed foods, and the immune-building benefits that a plant-based core diet, with the healthy affordable additions to lean meats, desserts, and dietary splurges can help one’s overall health, without leaving one feeling deflated, rejected, or deprived.
Though this book is a quick read, it truly opened my eyes to the possibility of stabilizing my health, living a more natural, healthy lifestyle was even more within my grasp that I previously thought possible.
This book is a must-read this coming summer swimsuit season!
