Join Me Tomorrow for the No-Spend October Challenge!

Hello again, savvy savers! Tomorrow starts a new No-Spend Month Challenge on The LadyPrefers2Save! So, here is a re-cap of last months start, the ground-rules, and the basics for this coming month:

As many of my readers know, I am always juggling several projects, business opportunities, scholastic goals, and home projects at any given time. With so much constantly going on, it’s sometimes easy to forget one of my main passions, and antithesis for this blog, the ability to save money, while live a better live, in hopes of having a “whole living blog,” to help me have a better, more organized life.

So, for 2015 I have decided to take an old-school approach to spending, and so for every other month this year, for the months of February, April, June, August, October, and December I will be participating in a NO SPEND month cycles!

Why this crazy idea? Well, a month of NO spending is an awesome way to both reset your spending patterns, as well as to either kick-start your budget or revamp and make changes to any existing budget you or your family may have. This is also a great challenge for personal responsibility; you can track what you have been spending your hard earned funds, and keep yourself on track, in terms of responsible spending thereafter.

In addition to my own daily blogging challenges, I have also signed-up for the challenge Ruth Soukup, from Living Well Spending Less, Spend Zero Challenge for the month of October as well. I encourage you all to sign-up for her challenge, as you will be emailed with a free, printable no-spend challenge guide, and on her site daily she will post on her own spending freeze recaps too! For those not sign-up, there is still plenty of time before tomorrow’s challenge starts to sign-up!

Also, be sure to follow Ruth on Instagram  @RUTHSOUKUP, and those in the challenge will be using hashtag#31DaysLWSZ to share tips, thoughts, & ideas regarding the challenge, and every time you share your own photo using that hashtag, you’ll be automatically entered to win a daily prize from LWSL site!

And while you at it, and in the throws of downloading new apps, be sure to install Periscope, then search for and follow me @LDYPrefers2Save, RuthSoukup @RuthSoukup, and another awesome new scope buddy, Brittney from Pennies into Pearls, who will not only be blogging and scoping along with this months challenge, she is hosting a free craft scope on October 17th that you won’t want to miss; she is also on periscope @PenniesintoPearls

So again, I’ll be broadcasting live every morning to talk about the day’s challenge, answer questions, and share tips and ideas at 8am CST on Periscope,  my daily blog challenge will post each morning at 6am CST,  and a picture of my daily recap will be posted to instgram after five pm CST daily.

I’m totally excited about this challenge! I am looking forward to blogging daily about my NO SPEND struggles, victories, and suggestions from the previous day, and will be posting easy-to-follow daily challenges for my readers during my no-spend months, as well as using Periscope and Instagram to show my victories for the day. As well, each Sunday will share what I’ve learned, saved, and gained from this challenge as part of my Weekly Goals & Reflections Posts. I hope that many of you will join me in this challenge, as we can all you use more ways to save around the home.

So, for those still on the fence here are a few guidelines to keep in mind about my challenge:

The rules are pretty simple:

  • No pre-purchasing, stockpiling, or hoarding of goods, perishable or commodity.
  • No spending on anything  beyond absolute necessities.
  • Eat from your pantry & freezer as often as you are able.
  • And make changes to the way you purchase and consume goods, services, and commodities in your home.
  • The idea of the challenge is to keep up with your daily activities,, but the main goal is simply to stop spending.
  • This challenge can be a life changing experience, as you may just be amazed at how your mindset and perspective will change after just a month of seeing how you can enrich your life, without spending more!

There are a few exceptions to the rule as follows:

  1. Unavoidable expenses related to employment, such as gas, are okay.
  2. Unavoidable school related expenses.
  3. Doctors appointments, veterinarian appointments, co-payments, family/pet prescriptions, and therapy sessions are okay.
  4. Do keep existing service and repair appointments that can’t be rescheduled to “Spending” months, such as hair appointments, lawn care services, trash removal, in-home repair services, etc.
  5. Do keep existing tithing and charitable giving.
  6. Do have an adequate stockpile of necessities prior to beginning this challenge, such as pet food, bedding, litter, laundry detergent, dish soap, snow salts, bottled water and emergency staples (if you live in areas frequently affected by seasonal weather), etc.
  7. Do keep up with healthy living habits. I will continue to use my envelope saving system to fund app purchase rebates (iBotta, Shopmium, Snap by Groupon) for fresh produce and milk, which will inevitably pop-up during my no-spend months; due to my PCOS I need several servings of fruits and veggies daily, and these app savings help keep my freezer stocked on a budget.
  8. As a business owner and blogger, I always keep ink in the printer, and recommend budgeting for at least one cartridge for the challenge, to ensure you can print any printables, charts, or freebies that may pop-up!
  9. And it goes without saying, please do pay all of our monthly obligations; rent, mortgage, insurance, utility payments, banking fees,  student/financial/business loans, medical expenses, and assumed or credit card debt.

This months spending freeze is not just about not the overall act of not spending, although that will be our main goal, it is about so much more!

By not spending we seek to find out:

  1. Better ways to revamp our monthly budgets.
  2. Analyze unnecessary spending patterns.
  3. Minimizing clutter and chaos as a means to give more freely to out communities.

So, this month I will challenge each of you to find ways to live well, live better, find new sources of joy, will spending less. You may just find out just how much we already have, and how little more we really need.  And hopefully, by the end of them month, a life rich with family, friends, and creative planning, secured by fiscally responsible measures, will be who we truly are. In addition, I hope to make my posts comments section a place of encouragement and accountability for us all, too!

I’m not gonna lie, there will be tough moments, and by day fifteen you may be second guessing this month long challenge as a whole. But having done this challenge now four times, it’s beyond worth the trouble.

I’m not sure how many of you are on board for this month’s challenge but the gauntlet has been passed, and I am calling on all of you all to try this challenge, in your own way, with your own rules, and just to do this with me. Right here, right now let’s both commit to a whole month of no spending, starting tomorrow!

Here’s to the challenge,

Motivational Monday’s: Why I Keep My Counters Cleared Off!

Hello again, savvy savers! For today’s Motivational Monday’s Post, I wanted to share the single biggest way I have found to keep my home clean, and that is by keep my kitchen counter tops completely cleared off! Why keep the counters empty? The kitchen is the heartbeat of our home, but when our kitchen counters are messy and cluttered, my mood, home, and family dynamic seems to feel stressed and overwhelmed, too! I truly believe, a clean kitchen is a happy and productive place to be!

So, you may be asking, is it incontinent to not have small appliances, crocks, tools, and towels in arms reach on the counters? No, in fact I truly have not missed having my items out. The reason I decided to clear my counter tops off was that I simply felt I did not use three-quarters of the items on my counters! Let’s say for 8 hours of the day, you utilize those items for about 5 minutes, or less? So, this ultimately means that we all leave appliances plugged into sockets, for 7 hours and 45 minutes, causing not only unnecessary phantom power sources, but these same power drainers are simultaneously taking up valuable space on your counters.

Couple this with the idea that items placed in cabinets are cleaner, after all isn’t this why we place dishes in cupboards, to keep grime, grease splatters, dust, and germs off of our dishes? Why keep items on counter tops, when it take a mere 5 seconds to take those items out of the cupboard, and about 10 seconds to put those items away in the cupboard!

Here are a few more reasons to clear off your counter tops:

  1. Clear counters, mean more space, and a kitchen that feels a lot bigger than it really is.
  2. It is much easier to cook from scratch and prepare three meals plus snacks each day for your family when your counters are clear.
  3. Clear counters creates both the physical and mental space to bake, whip up homemade snacks, and cook nutritious dinners; you create a workshop!
  4. When it’s easier to cook and prepare meals and snacks, we rely less on convenience and processed foods and snacks, and eat out less often; a savings for our wallets and health!
  5. Counter tops that are completely cleared off practically clean themselves; dirty dishes go straight into the dishwasher, staples into the pantry, and then simply sweep floors and wipe down counters!
  6. A clean kitchen is motivation to keep the rest of the house clean and picked up!

And as a bonus, it is a breath of fresh air, to walk into a clean kitchen! I look forward to walking into the kitchen and being able to actually do what I’m supposed to do in there – make a good, home cooked meal food for my family.

Here are a few ways I keep my counter-tops clear:

  • I keep my toaster oven, microwave, tool crock trio, and produce baskets on a small bakers rack.
  • All paper products, wraps, and lunch items are stored in in-cabinet wicker baskets.
  • Snacks are stored vertically in hanging baskets.
  • I keep a rack above my sink for washing accouterments and my favorite e-Pantry candles!
  • I keep my small appliances in a bottom cabinet; grill and baking appliances on one shelf, and all others on the bottom shelf.
  • I place my cutting boards in an upcycled magazine holder, on the side of my pantry.
  • All spices, food, and pantry items stay in the pantry!
  • Extra tools belong on my pullman cart beside my fridge!

So, I hope you all will completely clear off our counters in your kitchen and see what kind of difference it can make in our lives! If you need more practical and how-to steps to clear off your counters, including pictures from my own kitchen and how I store things, check out How To Completely Clear Off Your Kitchen Counters!

So, are your counters perpetually messy and cluttered? How do you think it would change your life to clear them off completely?

Here’s to a healthy home,

START

This weeks Sunday prep:

  1. Again this week week I wanted to make room in my deep freeze for the upcoming cyclical sales and to get us to the no-spending challenge in place in the next few days. With this in mind,  set out to make several new crock pot-ready freezer meals, made from stockpiled veggies, pork roast, and chicken breasts already on hand.
  2.  I prepped three meals; Chicken Curry, BBQ Chicken, and Cranberry Pork Roast
  3. Also, prepping a weeks worth of breakfasts and lunches on Sunday’s,  can be another way save a half hour of time each day time during the week for yourselves; I also find that this helps with my diet as having prepped snacks, ready and on hand, deters me from reaching for not-so-healthy options.
  4. I checked out this weeks sales ads, and made a shopping list accordingly; this also includes adding, sorting, and organizing coupons too!

So, that’s what we will be having this week. I’d love to hear what’s on your menu as well!

Here’s to Monday meals,

Why Authentic Perceptions Matter Most…

Tutorial Tuesday

This morning I intended to post about my usual point of reference-savings, couponing, and ways to bring home the bacon this season. But something else spoke to me this morning.

This morning In our personally-focused, life coach-dependent, plastic will do-you kind of world, it’s all too easy to think you need to change. Not just the things you do, but who you are.

It’s one thing to invite transformation for the sake of growth, improvement, and personal betterment. It’s another thing to feel so dissatisfied with yourself that no amount of change could possibly convince you that you’re worthy and lovable. This type of intrinsic self-loathing formed the basis of my adolescence and most of my twenties. It was like I was constantly trying to gut myself so I could replace my being with someone better, a person devoid of issues, conflict, and change.

On most days, I kept a running mental tally of all the ways I messed up—all the dumb things I said, the  to-do list tasks I was not able to complete, the term papers that I felt were sub-par, stupid ideas I suggested at work, and the biggest of them all-my inevitably unsuccessful attempts  to make people like me. It never occurred to me to say: how could they when I wasn’t willing to lead the way?

I tell you this not as an after picture of a person who can’t even remember that girl from before, but as someone who has lived this past decade taking two steps forward and one step back, and I see the signs all too well. For my willingness to give you this honesty, I am proud. I am focused. I am aware.

So, why the change today? I dawned me again that people are more apt to share their struggles once they feel like they’re on the other side. It’s a lot less scary so say “This is who I used to be” than “This is what I struggle with sometimes.”

Last evening, while on company a newly cultivated community of women, and dare say, friends, I found myself feeling isolated, left out, and abandoned in a chat that was centered on a topic dealing with the exclusionary action of other women. The feeling so of inadequacy I’ve faced for many years of my life all started flooding back to me, and left me feeling less cultivated, and more empty, unfocused, and depress than I had prior to the chat. I thought, where did I go wrong?  Why did these women seclude me?

I also took time out to think, was I truly excluded, or was it just my perception?

But this is my truth, and I give it to you, wholeheartedly and uncensored. I am a flawed woman. I am a woman who seeks the approval of others. I am a woman who feels guilty when people don’t agree with my opinions. On a primal level, I really want to be loved and accepted, but I learn a little more every day that my own self-respect is the foundation of lasting joy. I am getting better and better, with not having to seek approval for the choices I have made, and will make in my life.

real-friends-differently

I know that I am not so different from most people. Who doesn’t want to feel that people understand them, get them, bond with them, seek their company, and at the end of it all love them for who and what they are anyway? I think we all want to believe it’s perfectly okay, and maybe even wonderful, to be exactly who we are.

Of course, that has to start with us. People can only love us if we believe we’re lovable. And you may not fully believe it if you:

  • Constantly compensate for who you are with apologies or clarifications for your actions.
  • Beat yourself up when you make even the slightest, silliest mistake.
  • Think about your flaws and allow yourself to feel overwhelmed as a result.
  • Cling to people who see only seek to the best in you, the surface you, to seek coddling friends.
  • Find it hard to maintain those positive feelings when these same people walk away.
  • Tell yourself that you’re being selfish whenever you consider meeting your own needs.
  • Being unable to gracefully say no.
  • Repeatedly invest your time in self-destructive choices that disrespect and devalue your worth.
  • Don’t consider your needs a priority.
  • Refuse to give yourself the grace to grow in your person-hood.
  • Always find a reason to talk yourself out of your dreams, instead of seeing the beauty they possess.

In full disclosure, I have done every last one of these things at some point.  Some in the recent past. Some as we speak. Some that may be yet to come. Moreover, I suspect we all have, because it’s challenging to love ourselves, particularly in a world where change generates a substantial amount of revenue.

There are always going to be people,  products, and ideas for us to get better; and it’s a beautiful thing to embrace life-long growth. Life is all about transformation; staying static is a kind of death,. But it’s important that we all realize that we are beautiful and wonderful just as we are—perfected with time and patience in both our light and dark, in our complete, authentic selves. We have to learn to be our own guru.

null

So, here are a few tips I have that I have relied on for strength this morning:

1. Know that you are not an amalgamation of mistakes. Our past actions shaped today, but we are not what we’ve been. We don’t need to carry around labels or mistakes from yesterday, in hopes of defining who and what we are. Labels should never define us. Mistakes don’t have to brand you, particularly not if you’re making the conscious choice to do things differently now. Be a person of change, not a person who constantly changes to be someone whom they are not.

The truth is this: We can judge ourselves by the weakest moments or the strongest—that’s our choice. Choose to focus on the strongest moments in your past. Whether you believe in the positive or the negative, you’re right.

2. Know that you have nothing to prove to others. This goes double for women. I don’t care how esteemed or successful someone is; there are things they’re proud of and things they’re ashamed of, and inside they wish people would see more of the former and less of the latter. What to really be freed? Don’t think you need to be someone else to make someone like you, and don’t expect anyone to answer or prove anything to you in return. If someone makes you second guess yourself, take a step back. You don’t have to show the world you’re good, you just need to be the good you seek to see in the world. This worked for Gandhi, and it can work for you too!

3. Being authentic means being vulnerable. The act of letting people see all your different facets, trusting they won’t judge you, and knowing that if they do, that’s completely on them.  I’d rather be real with people, and know the ones who accept me accept me fully, than pretend and then have to maintain the illusion that I am something I’m not. Seek out a tribe of like-minded, authentic friends, and know that authentic friendships will happen for you.

4. Know the dark is valuable. We are all fallible.  So you’ve made mistakes— just this week, just this morning, who hasn’t? The beauty of having faltered is that you can help the world with your experiences. Because we err and hurt, we can empathize when other people are hurting. When we can reach out of ourselves, move beyond our comfortable threshold, we can then be put into a position where we can hold other people up when they need it. We are most supported when we support others. Know that when you are vulnerable you can pour kindness into others, and except them to do the same for you. When you realize your flaws can bring us closer together, dare I say, help change the world, suddenly  flaws seem less like liabilities, and more like assets. As my hubby says, it’s all about how you spin the story.

5. Know that you matter in this world. When I was a child, a teacher told me, “If I was your age, I wouldn’t be your friend. It can’t always be someone else, its you.” These words depleted me. WorseI held onto this for menacing mantra for years—that given the choice, most people wouldn’t like me. As I got older, a lot of people appeared to feel uncomfortable around me, and for good reason. I was like a leech on them, desperately hoping they’d whitewash that one horribly undermining comment someone spoke over me years ago. That somehow others would make me okay. I lacked perspective. I refused to believe I mattered until someone said it to me. Well, now I know differently—I know I do matter, and that how my life matters is dependent on what I do from day to day, from minute to minute, from moment to moment. Know that you touch countless people’s lives every day, even if someone isn’t blogging or tweeting about it, even if your new scopes community doesn’t see it, it just is.  Just like George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life, you do kind things that have a ripple effect you can’t possibly measure. Be the ripple.

6. Embrace the fuzzy.  Learn to give yourself enough grace to accept personal platitudes. Learn that goodwill means little when you sit alone, wishing you could experience the world differently. Once we accept that we’re worthy of love and our dreams, the natural next step is to actually create those things—not what we think we should do; what we really want to do, when we want to do it. Get out into the world. Do that thing that scares and excites you. Recognize you’re awesome for doing it. Give yourself permission to fail. Feel the fuzzies when you learn to love yourself while doing it. Sometimes the greatest moments in life are when we stand up, even when we stand alone.

So, what does this all mean? For me, this has been a little uncomfortable for me, to be honest. I’ve yet again split myself open. But this time I’m not trying to change what’s inside. I’m grateful that others last evening reminded me that what I needed was in fact more introspection, and less plastic, artificial thoughts on what friendship should be. I’m just here telling you that I am flawed, like we all are, and that’s not only okay, but beautiful

This tale does have a happy evening, folks.

Recently, as my readers may know, periscope has become one of my new past-times, and though some newer connections on the site have left me feeling frazzled, some have in fact been helpful and engaging. Dare I say, uplifting. I have found several great connections. Several awesome like-minded women of faith and family on periscope in the past few weeks (and if this message resonates with you, than be sure to check out Stephanie Cozby’s #LoveMeChallenge available on Katch too).

June No-Spend Month Day 14-

Moreover,  I am taking up the baton of my new Periscope friend, Tami Decker, the co-host of an awesome Blab show called Topic Mamas (along with the awesome Jessica Hinojosa), and the morning spin-off scope, Coffee Chat (in case some of my readers may not have plugged-into these shows, it’s a must have scope follow for those new, and looking to renew their periscope connections.), and scope for the first time coming Monday.

Why Monday? As this week seems to be full of new challenges and endeavors, I will be finishing up work reports early, creating topic sheets for periscope, and… getting a new pixie cut. Yes, I’m cutting off over a foot of hair this weekend, and starting a new look, as well as a new social media platform. I’d love for you all to check me out there Monday. I’ll be on scope @LDYPrefers2Save; you will also be able to check out my link on twitter and watch the replay on Katch.

So, I hope these thoughts may help. They have certainly helped me. Especially as you walk away from the screen, and into your own.

Here’s to you,

START

This weeks Sunday prep:

  1. This week I wanted to make room in my deep freeze for a cyclical end-of-summer sale on corn, squash, and bell peppers (which will go on sale at the end of August). So,  I set out to make several new crockpot-ready freezer meals, made from stockpiled veggies, pork roast, and chicken breasts already on hand.

How to save with Freecycle.org!

download

Hello again, savvy savers! Today, I wanted to share with about one of my favorite sites on the internet, Freecycle.org!

I love Freecycle. When I say I love Freecycle, I mean it, truly! Freecycle.org is a website, run through Yahoo, that connects people looking to get rid of household items, with people who need certain items; this method helps keep belongings out of landfills, and puts it in the hands of those who truly need, or want, the items! One great bit of advice I give friends is that if they are looking for furniture, craft materials, building materials, toys, clothing, uniforms, or some other needs, try Freecycle first! I thought I’d share some tips on Freecycle etiquette that I’ve picked up in my time using five freecycle groups in three cities here in my area.

Here’s how to start using Freecyle in your own home:

  1. Start a Freeycle.org account; sign-up for an account, find the group closest to your town, and once your account is approved by a group moderator, make sure that the organizations emails are secured as safe-senders in your email accounts.
  2. Post an offer. With any free site, its always best to start terms off with your best foot forward, and this case its by posting an offer to give away a free item you can part with; with Spring cleaning on the near horizon this should not be a hard endeavor! Be sure to start your ad with the following ISO (in Search Of), INO (In Need Of), or VES (Very Eagerly Seeking), followed by a colon, and then the desired item in question.
  3. Be considerate and realistic. Be sure to ask for things you truly need; asking for outrageous, egregious, or expensive items will cause your account to be suspected, or possibly deleted by group administrators.
  4. Ask for an item. Once you have given an item away, or made arrangement to do so; once you receive your item, always be sure to post a group note stating it has been taken, and while on the site post your first request!
  5. If someone offers you an item, be prompt in making arrangements to pick the item up, and after doing so always remember to shoot the sender a thank you email, as well as to return to the site and list the item as haven been received!
  6. Keep up with Freecycle.org emails. Be sure to check back often, and if you are able to do so, offer items to wanted ads, and never be too proud to ask for items from others!
  7. You will never receive a blessing with a closed hand, or mind! Be sure to think of your fellow group members before throwing out household items, as you would be surprised in what others may be in need of.

With all of this stated, I wanted to give you all an example of one set of items I received recently. There is a lady in my local group. She and I have exchanged items several times, and as she knows that I coupon and upcycle furniture, she often writes me to take things off her hands. This past weekend she wrote and offered me a pair of perfectly fine, white rocking chairs! Why was she getting rid of them? She felt that my husband and I, as a young couple, should have a place to sit and converse with one another! Is that not amazing? In addition to this, over the past year I have received antique mason jars, fabric, buttons, end tables, trunks, and other fun items!

I highly recommend this site, and hope you will use it soon!

Workout Plateau!

Battle of the Bulge, Budget-Style!

Hello again, savvy savers! It’s time again for another Battle Of  The Bulge, Budget-Style post!

As always, this series will focusing on ways to live a healthier, more active lifestyle while be able to afford clean, organic, obtainable foods! I believe this series can be worthwhile for many, who like myself, wish to get more in shape, not through crash-dieting but by small attainable lifestyle changes! With that said, here is where I am currently: I have a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. I am looking to lose 50 lbs., find affordable non-gym membership options for working out, and change the way I consume food; this includes meals, snacks, and splurges!

Here’s where I am today:

1) I am 32 years young
2) 5’6”,
3) Weight 189 lbs; I am down two pounds since last week.

So, here’s a recap of how to fight off exercise plateau:

-Do not change everything all at once.
-Make small changes in your workouts over time.
-Make sure to give yourself sufficient time to apply new changes before seeing results; think weeks not days.
-Do not change variables on a weekly basis.
-Don’t panic. Healthier living is not about your total weight, but your total health.
-So if you are looking for new, creative ways to help end your workout plateaus, I hope these tips will be helpful for you. Creativity is key. Be diverse. —Listen to your body. Stop examining the success stories of others as a marker for your current rate of progress, when it comes to how healthy you are. -You will only trigger change when you work injunction with your mind, muscles, and total mass.

The best news of all? If you keep with a plan of change, you will eventually be able to return to your original plan, healthier and more progressive that before!

Here’s to a healthier you,
